Free contraception could reduce abortion by 75 percent

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers suggest if women are provided free contraception, abortions could drop about 75 percent annually from the national rate.

Lead author Dr. Jeff Peipert of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis said a Brookings Institution report this year found more than 90 percent of U.S. abortions occur due to an unintended pregnancy and each year 50 percent of all U.S. pregnancies aren't planned -- far higher than in other developed countries.

The Contraceptive Choice Project enrolled 9,256 women and adolescents in the St. Louis area from 2007 to 2011 -- ages 14-45 at risk for unintended pregnancy, and willing to start a new contraceptive method.

The women were counseled about different methods of contraception, their effectiveness and risks and benefits. The women were told of the failure rate of fewer than 1 percent of pregnancies for women using IUDs and implants. Shorter-acting forms of birth control such as oral contraceptives have a failure rate of 8 percent to 10 percent.

About 75 percent of women in the study chose IUDs or implants, Peipert said.

The study, published online in Obstetrics & Gynecology, said from 2008 to 2010, annual abortion rates among study participants ranged from 4.4 to 7.5 per 1,000 women -- a drop ranging from 62 percent to 78 percent compared to the national rate of 19.6 abortions per 1,000 women in 2008, the latest year for which figures are available.

Among girls ages 15-19 who had access to free birth control provided in the study, the annual birth rate was 6.3 per 1,000, far below the U.S. rate of 34.3 per 1,000 for girls the same age, the study said.

Cost was a major factor in the women choosing a contraceptive. IUDs and implants are inserted by healthcare providers and IUDs are effective for five to 10 years and implants for three years. However, few women use them because they cost about $800 and are often not covered by insurance -- if the women are insured, Peipert said.

Yep, hand them out in school, churches, bus stops, everywhere. I wonder how many pregnancies result from some kid too embarrassed to walk into a store and buy condoms? They are going to do it with or without, it is natural.

I wonder how many women are aware of the cancer risk associated with hormone base contraception? We know a woman who took pills from the time she was 14 until her diagnosis with stage four breast cancer at 39. It was a miracle that she beat the cancer, she's been cancer free now for six years. Her doctors told her had she had just one child, her chance of contacting that cancer was next to zero. I think in weighing personal choice, all the risks need explored and considered.

Yeah, but can the cancer be definately linked to the contraceptive?

I am guessing that while the religious right rail against abortion, why would never accept providing free conception for women just because it would significantly reduce abortions. I think one refers to that conflicted opinion as hypocritical.

I guess the doctors did Thumper. Maybe it was a type of cancer that has been linked to hormonal issues. All I know is what she told us. Telling young girls to hop on the pill might not be wise if they are not aware of the long term risks. I don't know if the planned parethood group covers this risk in their counseling or not. They should if they don't.

The Pharma companies in their TV adds go thru about ten minutes of warnings about the side effects of their meds. There appears to be risk in all the meds.

Oh I agree, and they include a bunch of pages of stuff in print too small to read when I get a prescription. You have to ask the doctor to tell you what the garble says.

I think the article was talking about IUD's and Implants, which are more expensive than "the pill". The problem with a daily pill of course, is forgetting to take them. Planned parenthood gives an injection that is good for I think 2 or 3 months. There are lots of issues. Some people are pretty flaky about taking care of themselves particularly if they are substance abusers. And, there are some who get pregnant intentionally thinking it will make a guy stick with them, or trying to get something from a child like love and affection that they never got at home.
