Should we be striving to maintain the free and easy movement afforded by our current auto based society??

What would be the social cost of higher cost or limited availability fuel?

They can have my guns as long as they leave me my gas can and siphon hose!!!!

The freedom to move long distances at high speed with limited controls is in my view absolutely necessary to maintain the mental basis for the American social structure.!!!

It you want to get there, might want to try something other than a train in my estimation.

My crystall ball tells me in the not too distant future, large RVs will be a relic of the past. Pop ups and tents will be the thing.

I find it hard to imagine a modern society with out at least something like a car as well..

But I'm watching a show right now set in the last decade of the 19th century, and it is amazing how they got around - trains stopped at every little hick town, and bicycles were readily available - a couple has gone on a picnic by a riverside, and they're absolutely alone - about 35 miles from the city.

Having a car or it's like directly impacts ones perception of ones place in society and the amount of freedom of action one has. cars have even effected courtship rites in our society!!
