Celine Dion cancels all shows until June

Initially, the singer, who is battling a virus, was supposed to return on Saturday. But now, according to her website, all of her performances through March 18 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas have been canceled.

Celine flew to Los Angeles on Monday for an examination by one of the leading authorities on laryngeal physiology, Gerald Berke, at UCLA Medical Center.

He has diagnosed Celine with weakness in her right vocal cord, secondary to a viral illness. Berke has prescribed six to eight weeks of voice rest in order for Celine to completely recover.

"I tried to sing at my sound-check last week, and I had no control of my voice whatsoever," said Celine. "We thought that after a few days rest I would improve but it wasn't getting any better. ... I guess it was worse than I thought. I'm fortunate that I was able to see Prof. Berke," the singer says on her site.

"He identified what was causing the problems I was having, and he assured me that with the amount of rest he prescribed, I would be back to 100%. Obviously this is the worst thing for a singer ... not being able to do your shows. I feel worse knowing that I'm disappointing my fans. I'm so sorry. ... I hope they forgive me."

Celine's next run of performances are schedule for June 9-Aug. 19.

On Edit: Before Jim erased it, he wondered why she went to Los Angeles for health care, and why we Canadians weren't commenting on it.

Jim, it's a non issue, in spite of the US Right bringing this sort of thing up repeatedly. You need to ask a few questions before the answer becomes obvious. There's several things to consider:

Is it because she's rich and doesn't care about the cost?

Because that's where she lives these days, and isn't covered by the Canadian system any more?

If if she IS still covered, is it because the Canadian Health Care system pays for coverage wherever you are, and she happens to be in the US? It hardly makes any sense to come all the way back to Canada for a simple virus.

I think it's because, as I've said several times before, the American system is the very best in the world if you happen to be Filthy Rich.

Rich is definately key. Money talks loud in our world of health care. But Obama is fixing that. Can you imagine the turmoil the rich are going thru if they have to wait in line and accept the same standard of care as everyone else. Gotta love it.

I believe she lives in Vegas most of the time. If she is out of Canada for more than 180 days, her Canadian coverage is void. Regardless I imagine any medical costs are chump change to her.

Not necessarily, Paul (You know, Quebec is a distinct society).
There's a loop hole in our system whereby she could have set-up a Corporation in Quebec for which she'd be a full time employee with a work contract in the U.S. In that case, Quebec health care coverage would be maintained for the duration of her work contract.

If she lives in the US, I wonder is she pays taxes here instead of Canada?

You have to pay US taxes on money earned in the US, but that exempts you form Canadian taxes on the same income. The reverse is also true.

I believe Celine, her husband and children have lived in Southern Nevada for years now. She did take a break and toured Australia for a few months, but then returned here. I'm not sure if her children are citizens here, but it would not surprise me.

From everything I have read, the family considers them selves native here, and love the area. I can relate. We have many foreign stars and moguls who call this region home. One look at Quebec weather forecasts is all it takes.
