Suckers for more than just Israel. But what I do appreciate about Israel and the help we have given them in terms of miltary hardware. They have never asked us to put boots on the ground for them. And for the hardware and other aid, their PM stood in front of our Congress, on national TV and thanked us publically for the aid we have given them. Other "allies" have accepted fiancial aide, military aide, our troops when needed and rarely have publically thanked us let alone stand in front of Congress and on national TV thank us (the American people), often they just make snide anti-American remarks. Yes, we have been suckers.

You can't accuse the Israelis of being stupid. They know which side of the bread they want their butter on. A simple thank you is a small price to pay for the billions of dollars we give them every year. I would be surprised if Ban's assertion that other countries haven't thanked us for aid is true, but those other countries know that when it comes down to it the US will back Israel to their detriment if necessary.

Germany's Angela Merkel at joint session of Congress thanks the USA for freedom

Friday, November 6, 2009

By John Metzler

UNITED NATIONS In a stirring and heartfelt tribute to the United States and its people, German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress in Washington DC and outlined the post-war relationship between the United States and a politically free, and now united, Germany. Speaking to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, Chancellor Merkel underscored the close political partnership between Germany and the USA.

German-US military history was made earlier this year when the German Armed Forces awarded 14 American soldiers one of the German military's highest honors for valor, the Gold Cross of Honor of the German Armed Forces, for risking their lives in the rescue of wounded German soldiers in northern Afghanistan. It was the first time non-Germans had ever received the award. Some of the US soldiers will now be honored by the US Army in a ceremony on December 13 in Katterbach, Germany.

Here's one from the Philippines.

" – President Aquino thanked the United States yesterday for its promise of military assistance in the event of a shooting war in the Spratlys, and expressed relief at China’s assurance that it had no plans to invade the Philippines.

“We are grateful to the US for their offer of help,” Aquino told reporters in an informal interview here, where he led the launching of the 200-megawatt power plant of Korean Electric Power Co. in Barangay Colon, Naga City in this province."

"The Japanese defense minister visited U.S. troops aboard USS Ronald Reagan April 4 to express his appreciation for their efforts in the earthquake recovery mission."

Our friends have thanked us, but we didn't help our Germany, Japan, Israel, or the Philippines in search of a pat on the back. We did it because it was the right thing to do. This nuclear crap needs to deescalate. One way to do that would be to guarantee Iran that we would come to their aide if they were attacked. I know Iran postulates too much when it comes to Israel, but I also do not believe they are so stupid as to commit suicide. Israel, I'm not so sure of.

Given the unequivocal support this country has pledged to Israel since 1948, why would you think the Iranians would buy that logic. Do you think we would abandon Israel if they attacked Iran?
