MrsS, you mistake my feelings about envy. The truth is, I don't spend much time wondering or worrying about how other nations view the US. It matters to me how I view the US. We have our problems as does Canada, Germany, the whole of the EU, Japan, Israel..... the world. I suppose, as I think back to the early 40s, I think the US has done more than than their share of ridding the world of dictator nations and at a heavy cost. We rebuilt nations at a heavy cost. And many of those nations we have stayed on much, much too long, again at a heavy cost. We have gone to war at times for "allies" at no real benefit to ourselves again at a cost. We probably have done more of that than any nation in the world..... for example, probably no nation put up as much resources as we for the "humanitarian effort" in Libya and for what. Germany and Italy received more oil from Libya and if I remember correctly Germany said they weren't going to get involved in the effort. I suppose, since the 1940s, many here in the US have grown tired of giving aid to people who don't really want it and quite honestly, haven't done much to deserve it. IMO I don't really care if any nation "envies" the US or finds discust with it. We don't seek their envy, but at times we enjoy striking back at their anti-American gestures from time to time (speaking of anti-Americanism and "envy" and not political policy). I do it in the form of sarcasm as you have undoubtedly observed. Several of the Canadians and you (you being the only EU person on this forum that I know of) think the same about the GOP and Dem policies here in the US in that you voice your favor of the left and your displeasure (for lack of a better word) of the right and even made mention of Canada and the EU being alike in that your nations are "socially liberal" and "fiscally conservative," one could say it was a means of teaming to oppose. You make it sound as though the EU and Canada are alike, that you think alike when it comes to social and fiscal policies. But frankly, I see no similarity in Canada and the EU at all, at least not in the results of your social and fiscal policies so something is quite different. Canada is our neighbor and we really care for the Canadian people, as Sea pointed to a poll that was taken. We are like brothers and sisters who fight and argue, but we will always be friends. We can't afford not to be. As Paul (Telco) wrote, "we are connected at the hip."But as far as the rest of the world goes, I'd be happy if we just come home.... military, monetarily, the works. Maybe that's why I see some value in Ron Paul's foreign policies realizing that his domestic policies may be too stiff for the socially liberal. As far a our president (our administration, our government) goes, I rather have a different one, one that is truly more fiscally conservative and not so socially extravagant. But getting back to "envy." Ain't looking for it and don't want it. Don't care if "they" do or if they don't. Doesn't matter. |
