I wouldn't mind paying more to mail a letter. I mail so few anymore the cost could double and it wouldn't be a big deal. Now, the people who send me a moutain of unwanted solicitations might object, but if it would give me less junk mail I would approve.

Me either Tom. Our US postal mail service is much better than UPS who just sets our deliveries by the garage, in the snow and don't even let us know it there. The US Postal service puts our mail in the mail box, closes the door and if it doesn't fit they bring it to the door and ring the bell.... and it's cheaper and more convient. I'd be glad to pay $.20 more a letter tomorrow to keep them in business.

I think the Postal Service is the best bargain in the US today.

Agreed. Too bad the government is running it into the ground.

Yet there is always a public outrage when postal rates go up, even by pennys.

But the fact is that many of the post offices are not needed, only in existence because of politics. Assuming there's still a plan to eliminate Saturday delivery, that's the only service change except there is a plan to close some plants that might slow the mail stream a bit.

On edit, its a good bargain like Social Security and Medicare because we're not paying the cost of the service.

Yes, the postal service needs to charge what it costs to deliver the service. Does anyone know why it doesn't?

Jim,

The post office wastes money putting PO's in small towns to provide as much service as possible. Just like the fed govt wastes money putting new hips and heart parts in fat non productive seniors.

For the same reason we don't fully pay for Social Security and Medicare. We've learned that we can pass the costs to our children.
