Maybe there will come a day when it makes economic sense for the average family to invest in solar power. It just doesn't pencil out. The panel prices and other gadgets that go into the system need to drop in cost by 70%.

We have solar panels on the roof of the off-set of our barn for hot water heat and we have a large, insulated storage tank to hold the heated water. It's good on sunny days of late spring and in the summer. From September to May our cloudy days far outnumber our sunny days and I might as well as take a dip in the pond as to look for hot water during those months. As Germany has found, it's not the Sahara desert here when it comes to sunny days. Location, location, location.

Occasionally we find sand grains on our cars and the weatherman says, they are Sahara sand. It`s beyond my imagination, how sand grains fly

such long distances..... blink

That's just the sand grains that have shaken off the trousers of those Arabs that Europe allowed in for their cheap labor. It's a liberal thing.

What did that famous Indian Chief say? It goes somehow in the line of " You can`t eat money......"

Looking only at the financial aspect is shortsighted, imo.

Yet, there are good news too:

. According to the Environment Ministry, overall investment in renewable energy production equipment more than doubled to €29.4 billion ($38.44 billion) in 2011. Solid growth in the sector is projected through the next decade.

Some 370,000 people in Germany now have jobs in the renewable sector, more than double the number in 2004, a point used as proof that tax payers' investment is paying off.

Have heard that Indian expression. In Spain Green lost jobs.

It's great Germany is gaining in Green jobs, but what if the investment funds dead ends? There are many forms of alternative energy and Green technology, but you can't predict which ones will be around tomorrow.

Chris, one can only hope that investments are paying some day.

Interesting, that you distinguish between alternative energy and Green technology. I thought that`s the same, no?

No, the European are, aren't they?

Hear the liberals like cheap labor as they have grown more than they can use... use for labor... but now they can use them for votes. I didn't say liberals were stupid.

Maybe they are all Green tech. I was thinking difference between alternative fuels vs technology that makes consumption of a given fuel less dirty and cheaper, designing engines with better mpg (or however you measure that in Germany).

"one can only hope that investments are paying some day"

Right, one can hope, but no one has a crystal ball. If the states or Länder had more power to experiment, as opposed to federal central planning, there'd be greater chance some new tech would succeed.
