Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Coutts, Alberta port of entry seized 75 firearms, including 48 handguns — four of which were loaded, one blowgun, one pistol crossbow and 12 high capacity magazines. It’s the largest handgun seizure for Coutts.

CALGARY — Officers at a southern Alberta border crossing seized 75 guns from an American traveller — many of which are restricted or banned in Canada.

The guns were among a cache of weapons intercepted Tuesday at the Coutts port of entry, 105 kilometres southeast of Lethbridge.

Canada Border Services Agency officers found 48 handguns in a truck belonging to an American traveller en route to Alaska — the largest single seizure of handguns at Coutts, officials said.

"It’s big," CBSA spokesman Sean Best said.

It’s standard for CBSA officers to ask anyone entering Canada if they’re carrying weapons.

When the suspect allegedly denied transporting any weapons, CBSA officers decided to do a more detailed inspection of his truck.

Officers found a total of 75 firearms amid the man’s belongings in the bed of his pickup truck, Best said.

Of the handguns — which are restricted or prohibited in Canada — four were loaded, said Best.

The CBSA also seized a blowgun, a crossbow and 12 high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Some of the long guns amid the man’s belongings are legal in Canada, but it is an offence under the Customs Act to enter the country without declaring them.

CBSA officers arrested George Foster, 54, and turned him over to the RCMP.

Foster has been charged with 10 weapons and Customs Act offences so far, though Best said more charges could be pending.

Foster is scheduled to appear in Lethbridge provincial court on Feb. 23.

What sort of mentality thinks it's OK to travel ANYWHERE with that sort of armament?

I blame Obama.

The question is, what was his motive? A normal citizen caught with a handgun trying to cross is one thing, this is something else. I wonder if he has gang connections and was trying to do some guns for dope trading?

Also, he must have lied about having them when asked.

The article says he did.

I'm not sure what would be more stupid, to lie or tell the truth.

But I guess the big stupid was bringing them up in the first place.

As for motivations, you'd have to ask him, and all I can see is he said he was driving up to Alaska.

You always should have a backup or three to take care of the bad guys.

Seems to me the bare minimum for traveling through Canada!

Driving to Alaska, but I am sure he was fully aware of Canadian laws or he would not have lied. Is it even legal to cross state lines with that amount of armament?
