Renewables might be a solution down the road, but not when we are talking about this level of over population. The population is increasing faster than new efforts to deal with it can come on line. And in the end, it is only a temporary solution. I think we are at the tipping point, and nature will soon solve the problem.
As I said on a different thread to a diferent person, your idea strikes me as just one more rationalization to avoid doing what's necessary

I'm not rationalizing here Brew, what I'm doing is addressing the real issue associated with your main 'cause', that being man-made affect on the atmosphere. Your solution is temporary and allows for further avoidance of the real cause.

Why not allow for the nature to run it's course?

Because I think the human race is smarter than that, although I must admit there is much evidence that I may be wrong.

I strongly believe that we have all the technology we need to easily support 10 Billion humans or maybe more, and in a lifestyle we could all wish for now.

All it takes is the will to do it.

And oddly enough, much of the technology needed to avoid AGW is exactly the technology that would allow us to support the world's billions in style.

Saying we shouldn't bother trying because we might not make it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

What happened to this thread? I was all psyched up for a mano y mano confrontation between Pat and Brew, and what we got so far, is Pat telling us how he "feels" about everything, while Brew offers facts and stats. I'd like to see where this ends up, unless it already has. If it has, nothing much got settled. The anti side produced nothing of substance.

Check this out Brew. http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/

In 2160, we will have surpassed 10 billion. Population growth will be roughly 250 billion a year, exponentially growing at a faster rate. By 2200, 20-30 billion. Global climate will have long since been forgotten as people spend their time just finding a place to stand in the crowd. Now factor in even better medicines and even longer lifespans, and who knows what the potential population will be.

This is not a question of how smart homo sapiens are, either war, famine or disease will balance the planet out.

Pat, your own link shows that is not true:

Quote:

The annual growth rate is currently declining and is projected to continue to decline in the coming years, but the pace of the future change is uncertain. Currently, it is estimated that it will become less than 1% by 2020 and less than 0.5% by 2050.

As I said earlier, the more prosperous the nation, the lower the birth rate. And why is that? Education. The simplest solution to the population problem is to educate the women.

Education vs Population Growth

But you are right in one sense, if we don't smarten up, war, famine and disease will wipe us out. And all three of those will be due ot Climate Change.

Pat, I think you're having trouble visualizing just exactly how bad things are going to be.

When someone says "We're already 1 degree warmer." That doesn't seem so bad. What's one degree? And even as the forecasts say we'll probably be 6 degrees warmer by 2100, that still seems minor- what's six degrees?

Maybe these videos will help: (They're slightly out of date - for instance, several of the things forecast for 2 degrees are already happening, and some models are showing we'll reach 10 degrees if we don't change direction soon.) Sorry about the commercials.
