And nearly bankrupt. Now if government can just resist bailing them out! Now there's hope and change for you.
Nope, if the government would just let them charge what they need to charge, locate only where they want to locate, deliver on their own schedule, the PO would be profitable.
I think the best you can do is say might be profitable. Kick in allowing consumers the right to refuse delivery of junk mail, and they might not be so profitable.
I don't think it's the PO that chooses to deliver junk mail. They can't discriminate. Mail is mail. And they have to deliver it.
Private companies can choose whom they do business with.
It's not truly a private company in that it has mandates from the government, but you knew that didn't you. You're just arguing now for the sake of argument. And, your arguments make no sense.
I think you should stop trying to second guess motivations, rivers, it only detracts from discussion. And if something doesn't make sense, ask for clarification.

I thought we'd agreed it should be privatized when you said "In effect, it is already privatized." Now you're arguing it's not with "It's not truly a private company in that it has mandates from the government" so there's the source of confusion.

LOL! Reason I asked was whether our rates are similar to yours, and if not, how much difference is there. If the USPS rates were 60 cents instead of 45 cents, maybe our PO would make money as well. But, our government has to approve rate increases and it's like pulling teeth to get it done. I also heard the other day, and I missed part of it, that the USPS is required to contribute some of its revenue to the government. I haven't been able to verify that, so if anybody knows the specifics, please post it.

Yes, Chris, it's that gray area thing again. It's not black and white. The USPS is a constitutionally mandated service, but it is also an independent agency.

If .60 per letter would put them in the black it seems mismanagement by the PO officials or a government agency is the cause of them being in the red

Try to keep up miller. The government won't allow them to raise their prices that much. It's not mismanagement.

And a government-controlled service. Power to establish post offices doesn't necessarily include that, we'd have to look at what founders meant by that.
