And nearly bankrupt. Now if government can just resist bailing them out! Now there's hope and change for you.
Nope, if the government would just let them charge what they need to charge, locate only where they want to locate, deliver on their own schedule, the PO would be profitable.
And the service would be much poorer to many folks in this country. That's true, Colo. My point is that the PO is not a poorly run organization.

I think the best you can do is say might be profitable. Kick in allowing consumers the right to refuse delivery of junk mail, and they might not be so profitable.

... not to brag about it, but:

Canada Post Reports Highest Profits in History. Despite a modest decline in volumes during 2010, Canada Post Corporation (CPC) reported a record net profit of $443 million. Fully $315 million was due to income from operations, which makes 2010 CPC's second-best year for Income from Operations. CPC's 2010 Return on Equity (ROE) of 21.8% also sets a new record; in the 29 years since 1981,when Canada Post became a Crown Corporation CPC had never achieved a ROE greater than 17%. Much of the success of CPC during this period of slow economic growth has been as a result of productivity improvements.

Is the Canadian postal system exactly like ours, Jack? What does it charge for a letter? Does distance matter? Is there a PO in every town in Canada? Does the government have regulations regarding those things?

Canada Post is a Crown Corporation (government of Canada) Our system is very similar to yours, except that the government is not directly involved in it's operation or business decisions. Mail distribution is assured all across the country. Service is available on business days (not on legal holidays or week-ends) It has approx. 6,500 post offices across Canada. A first class mail stamp is now $0.60 (I think) for whatever the distination (distance) is in Canada.

Private companies can choose whom they do business with. It's not truly a private company in that it has mandates from the government, but you knew that didn't you. You're just arguing now for the sake of argument. And, your arguments make no sense.

Is that 60 cents US or Canadian?
