Postal rates are always rising. I do lots of mailing for our organization from Bellingham, Wa and it seems rates go up pretty much annually. Its the same in Canada. Email is really cutting into postal services bottom line. |

We use very few stamps. The ones we do use are from last year and are forever. Gas prices rise along with the cost of equipment etc. I consider the Postal Service a bargain. And I hope they keep Saturday service intact. |

It may be a bargain, retired but your beloved government is running it into the ground. |

I've always been very satisfied with the postal service, and think they do a good job for the money. While they are expected to not loose money, at the same time they have mandated service requirements by the government to areas that aren't profitable. Were it a business purely run for profit without government interference they would be profitable but service would disappear in some areas. |

What areas would lose service? And do you have a link to that? |

Under normal free market competition, where competitors look for new efficiencies in production and service, prices ought to be going down, not up. Like retired I rarely use stamps, and am going to each utility service I use to see if I can go electronic in billing. |

You just answered your own question. Post Offices have become irrelevant to a large portion of the population, however they are still a requirement to a portion of the population who has no access to electronic services to replace it or areas where courier services won't go. The fact technology has made it a non profitable service does not mean it is not an essential service, so it has moved to one of those things that government is required to supply at a loss. At least until it is completely obsolete like horse & buggy manufacture. |

Not to mention that the postal service is mandated in the constitution. |

As long as government is not footing the bill as i always have been told the service is a private entity and nobody use's anyway why should anyone care. Now if is costing us taxpayers so much money then Congress will have to chop chop the service and let Sarah and Tom in Lone Montana start gittin their seed catalogs from UPS or FEDEX. Might cost a bit more but hey we all gotta buck up. There are private courier services that can pick up the slack. |
