If he contributes more by economic means and contributes more by political means (taxes) then he contributes more than his fair share.

What is a fair share? If Joe average pays $4000 a year in income tax, do you think a billionaire should pay the same $4000? Even though that amount of money would be nothing to a billionaire? The reason we have a progressive tax system is so people will be taxed by their ability to pay. Now what is unfair about that?

If someone is able to work harder and smarter and chooses not to then they don't have to pay their fair share of taxes. I disagree.

But I can live with at least some of that if what my taxes are spent on are for the "general welfare."

"What is a fair share?"

That's actually a liberal question. One used to appeal to emotions. And one usually asked when considering what taxes should others pay. To me "fair" is far too subjective a notion.

Here's another one. Traffic fines. I believe that fines should be based on income as well. A $100 ticket means nothing to a millionaire, but its a lot of money for an average Joe. They do this in Finland. And Switzerland. LINK

I remember reading about it a few years ago when Swiss judge slapped a $300,000. fine to a speeding driver, based on his wealth. ...Makes sense to me.

The state governments here in the US would probably need enough of those $300,000 driver fines to offset for the increased costs in additional public/government staff salaries and benefits needed to keep track of incomes of all folks.

That also would mean that much of the population wouldn't have to pay much or anything at all; in fact, many would be owed money by the government as their incomes are in the minus range if you consider that they paid by the tax payer for doing nothing. The "payment for crime" program.... an entitlement. Think how many votes the Democrats could get for such a well thought out program.

And what is your reasoning for this your belief, telco.

"A $100 ticket means nothing to a millionaire, but its a lot of money for an average Joe."

What you cannot possibly know, the subjective valuations of others, is not a reason.
