When was Joe ever concerned about his income? He made much less than lesser coaches at major universities. He has lived in the same modest home for decades, donated much of his money to the university. He has produced much greater good to players and students, the university and his community than all his coaching peers, all of his university peers and more than John and Jane Q. Public will ever dream to. He's never been arrogant. It's the media and the "moralists" (the lynching party folks) who have been arrogant.... that seems to be either their job or what they enjoy doing. There is a reason his former players, his fans and students stand behind Joe while condeming the acts of child abuse by Sandusky. Joe wasn't the one who commited these sins and if Mike McQueary is correct and truthful about what he recently has said.....of stopping the incident and talking to the police about what he walked in on then .... all this "crucifiction" of him and Joe will be a big mistake, one huge injustice of a great man, a great program and a great university. If true, police who McQueary said he talked to, the administration, including certain trustee members, the justice system of Centre County and a missing DA must answer for. Time will tell, if the justice system is complete and gets to the real truth, but it may be to late for ALL the injustices by Sandusky, the legal system, the media and the "moralists." |

I just read that 4 years ago he transferred ownership of the home he held jointly with his wife to her. It said it was a home he bought years ago for $58,000. I wonder how much his salary was? Typically winning coaches are paid a lot of money. Although to us mere mortals it sounds like a lot, I would think the $500,000 would be a fraction of his annual pay. I have more problem with the public servants that retire on almost as much or more as they were paid while working, or legislators who recieve retirement and health care benefits in retirement for a brief stint in office. |

Government employees take good care of themselves whether they be teachers, congressmen or any where in between. |

Division I football is a business.... a "private business" within a pubic institution. The football programs at Penn State (and many other Division I universities) financed itself, other sports programs that don't earn their keep, did much to grow a university and a town economy that the tax payer didn't have to pay for via state tax..... not to mention (for anyone who has witnessed central Pennsylvania and State College over the last 40 years) has effected the building and enhancement of highways, stadiums and dormitories that have put many construction workers and educational personnel to work, brought much income to private businesses in the area and tax revenue for the state. It is true that on football weekends, little State College becomes the third largest city in Pennsylvania and it's only been that way since the early 60s. Government employees taking care of themselves?? In this case a man's efforts (Joe Paterno) did much to take care of a public university, a community and private businesses and individuals. But all that wasn't Joe's dream. His dream was to build a quality football program with quality student athletes who graduate and become contributers. His football program has lead the nation in that regard. |

In addition: Dead Flies and the Legacy of Joe Paterno
Sixty-one dedicated years on the job. Sandusky was six years old when Paterno started at Penn State. By the time Sandusky came to PS to be a defensive coordinator the program was already a great, quality and honorable program with no significant blemish. There will never be another Joe Paterno. One coach at one university for 61 years with the total honorable accomplishments. Never, not even Mike Krzyzewski (31 years at Duke). It wil take more than a Jerry Sandusky or a news media to take away what JoePa is and the good he has done. |

I have been absolutely amazed how many people hate Joe's success as a human being. Jealousy is a terrible thing. |

USA TODAY College Football Coach Salary Database, 2006-2011 Sixty-two Division I universities paid (university costs) their football coaches more than Penn State paid Joe Paterno. No 1. Texas pays Mack Brown.............. $5,192,500 (School pay) No 2. Alabama pays Nick Saban............ $4,683,333 No 3. Oklahoma pays Bob Stoops......... $4,075,000 No 4. Iowa pays Kirk Ferentz................. $3,785.000 No 5. LSU pays Les Miles...................... $3,751,000 N0 6. Arkansas pays Bobby Petrino...... $3,635,000 No 7. Auburn pays Gene Chizik............ $3,500,000 N0 8. Michigan pays Brady Hoke........... $3,254,000 No 9. Florida pays Will Muschamp......... $3,221,000 No 10. Georgia pays Mark Richt............ $2,811,400 On down to number 63 for Penn State and Joe Paterno. None of the 62 coaches from the higher paying universities have come close to years served, dedication to school, wins recorded or in school and community stimulus. Six (6) of the top ten universities of the highest paid coaches are from the SEC where football is more of a way of life for those universities than at Penn State. Penn State and Joe Paterno is the most highly known because of Joe Paterno's record and his philosophy of quality student athletes. No coaches record can compare to Joe. |
