JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi voters Tuesday defeated a ballot initiative that would've declared life begins at fertilization, a proposal that supporters sought in the Bible Belt state as a way to prompt a legal challenge to abortion rights nationwide.

The so-called "personhood" initiative was rejected by more than 55 percent of voters, falling far short of the threshold needed for it to be enacted. If it had passed, it was virtually assured of drawing legal challenges because it conflicts with the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a legal right to abortion. Supporters of the initiative wanted to provoke a lawsuit to challenge the landmark ruling.

WASHINGTON -- Ohioans overturned a divisive anti-union law on Tuesday, delivering a significant defeat to Republican Gov. John Kasich and a victory to labor unions.

Ohio voters rejected Issue 2, a ballot referendum on Senate Bill 5, a measure that restricts collective bargaining rights for more than 360,000 public employees, among other provisions. Opposition to the legislation inspired large protests from residents around the state this year.

GRAND BLANC, Michigan: With unofficial vote totals still outstanding, Republican state Representative Paul Scott conceded defeat at 11:35 p.m. ET, making him the first Michigan state legislator to be recalled since 1983.[1] As of 12:25 a.m. ET, results from the Genesee County Clerk's website show 51 percent voting against the recall, however, a ballot shortage in Mundy Township has caused a delay in final results.[2]

Scott said the final count shows him losing by 232 votes and that he will not pursue a recount. "The community's just been through too much. ... It's time to move on," he said.[3]

Nice to see signs of sanity amongst US voters.

Maybe the Koch brothers and their friends will lose yet, and the US economy can get back on its feet.

Yeah the next step would have been to ban masturbation as it murders 1000's of potential babies.

I was laughing when I read the proposed law in Mississippi. Under that law, people could demand child support for stored fertilized eggs or demand state welfare pay for the upkeep and storage of the fertilized eggs. :bang:

Here in Washington, we kicked the state out of the government monopoly on liquor sales. That should drop the price we pay by 50%.

In Seattle they turned back a $60 city vehicle license tab fee that other cities were eying as well. For years we had the highest taps in the country and the money was always diverted to other causes rather than transportation needs. I think we might be slowly getting back to local rule where communities decide what they want to support or not.

Georgia finally allowed towns to vote on Sunday liquor and beer sales. The local Christian Coalition tried to drum up a strong "NO" vote, but failed miserably.

The vote was a walloping defeat for the Georgia Christian Coalition, which first lost a lobbying war at the state Capitol, then tried in vain to muster local-level opposition. No organized "vote no" campaign emerged, with most churches choosing to stay out of the fray.

During the past few weeks, the coalition sent out two email blasts, each with more than 11,000 recipients, imploring pastors and other church officials, parishioners, religious organizations and civic clubs across the state to stop Sunday from becoming another Saturday.

No churches wrote back with offers to help, coalition President Jerry Luquire said, but maybe Tuesday's results will show them how much he needs them. With more votes sure to come during the March 6 primary, Luquire said he'll be working to enlist churches, private schools and pro-family groups.

The right wing christian loonies HATE the idea of personal freedom and want to control the television viewing habits. the books people read, climb into the marriage bed and the doctor's office to tell people how to live their lives. Probably the most Anti-American group in the nation today.

Yep, just like in California.

Costco led the drive. This is not the first time this was on a ballot. People ar emore price conscious these days and knew they were getting screwed at the state stores.
