The questions you raise Brew merely seek a complicated view. An assumption perhaps that we have some moral obligation to irresponsible people. The millions of decisions people make in their life should have consequences if the decisions are dumb.

A person is born into the richest nation on earth. Provided education and nurturing by the society and family. If they decide to not make arrangements ofr health insurance or burial then two consequences exist. 1. If they get ill or injure themselves, unless they can find a bleeding heart to pay for their care, unless they have saved enough money to pay fpr their care, and unless their family can care for them, then dearth is a real possibility. If subsequently, nobody claims the body, then some quick lime and an unmarked grave awaits them. We do after all, need to protect ourselves from their disease carrying corpse.
I'm not only concerned about the moral issues, although I am reminded of "Are there no Prisons? No Union Workhouses?"

I'm also concerned about the costs, and what it's doing to your overall healthcare system.

You spend a fortune on administration, chasing people who don't pay up, and another fortune fixing health care problems that occur because people don't come in until the situation has reached the drastic stage.

Another fortune is spent in advertising - again and again friends of mine who travel to the US are struck by the amount of money being wasted trying to get patients to go to some particular hospital, or buy some particular health plan. How does that benefit you or anybody else?

The bottom line is, in study after study, it has been shown that the US pays twice as much or more per capita than any other country in the world, and has about the worst results of any industrialized nation.

Why would so-called "conservatives", crying about high taxes and huge spending at the federal level, be so set on returning to the system that got you into this fix?

Obamacare is a long way from perfect, but anything's better than the godawful disaster you've had. Isn't the answer to take what's good and fix what's bad, rather than throwing out the (dead) baby with the bathwater?

Actually Brew, the problem is rapidly fixing itself. Towns, counties, states and the federal government have run out of money. And borrowing more is becoming an obstacle course. Americans are fed up with taxes and will not let deadbeats force a class warfare down our throats. Soon there will be no money to pay for those who are irresponsible. You reap what you sow.

Still not your business, Brew. There must be some Canadian matters for you to lend your self-proclaimed expertise to.

Right, but Brewter's convoluted straw men, demonizing trolling, and liberal emotionalism are entertaining.

So Chris, saving individuals money while giving people better health care is liberal?

Insisting that everybody pays for their own health care without freeloading off the responsible citizens who have contributed is liberal?

Wanting to cut taxes is liberal?

Wanting to reduce bureaucracy is liberal?

Count me as a liberal.

I do. Not because of the straw men or trolling, but the emotionalism of your arguments, the emotionalism that bridges the yawning gap between seeming problem and government solution.

Insurance can't work if only sick people buy insurance, or healthy people wait until they are sick and on the way to the hospital to take out a policy. The idea that those who opt out will just be denied care sounds great, but we all know it will never happen. The only way to control cost is to cover everyone, and negotiate fees with providers and drug companies.
