It hit me as a shock last night when ESPN informed me that Joe dad died of liver cancer. In 1975, I was attending a Boone Kirkman heavy weight bout in Seattle Boone was a ranked heavy weight and local kid from Renton. I had ringside seats and who sits down next to me? . Smokin Joe and two other guys. We spent about two hours watching the fight card and talking back and forth. I'll never forget the size of Joe's hands, they dwarfed mine when we shook. Joe was there promoting his next bout and mingling with the fighters, managers and guys like me. He was polite, soft spoken and a genuine likable guy. Over the years I took and interest anytime news popped up concerning him. Liver cancer took him down in his final match. |
