I think this has caught Nittany Lion fans totally off guard. I know for one, I was totally shocked when I heard the news about Jerry Sandusky. We only knew of his quiet greatness as a defensive coordinator, a great athlete in his day, a coach in the late 80s and early 90s that I thought would take over after Paterno. You never expect to find an "all American" type athlete/coach to be a pedophile. The charges are alleged but from what I read in the on line news media, the charges are not without strong foundation. The thing is, how deep does the cover up go? Was the AD (Curley) and the VP of finance (Schultz) pressured to keep it under wraps to prevent disgrace being brought on the University? Did JoePa go far enough when told by the then graduate assistant (Mike McQueary, present wide receiver coach) that he had witnessed the "unthinkable" incident in an athletic shower room? Paterno did right by reporting the incident to the AD, but should or did he follow up considering the seriousness of the incident?

It's a shame that the actions of one person can be the instrument that harms young people first and foremost and also bring down others and shame a university. I'm afraid there is too much compiled information over too long a period that is going to explode and hurt many. I'll be going to the Nebraska game this weekend, but this certainly will put a damper on the excitement that should be there.

If the accusations are so unbelievable to LaVar Arrington, a linebacker coached by Jerry Sandusky for four years, how much more perplexing must it be for fans?

The coach is in his 60's and has probably been preying of the weak kids for fifty years. You can't hide this kind of crap for fifty years without rumors and stories floating around. I think Joe Paterno knew further back than he has let on and would not have come forward were it not for the graduate assistant telling him bluntly that he saw the coach in the locker room, with a kid pinned against the wall, and he giving the kid a blow job. Plus the GA probably told papa that Joe either report it or he would.

It sounds like the football programs reputation, Joe's sainthood and the schools reputation were more important than a 10 year old getting sodomized by a coach.

I hope the school has deep pockets, because I bet the eight that came forward are a drop in the bucket of what will now come forward. Similar cases in the Catholic church have financially wiped out and put into bankruptcy the diocese.

Joe Paterno needs to be fired, he was the captain of the ship and this happened on his watch. Why didn't he personally go to the authorities after it was apparent his bosses were not going to do so. The report was three years ago.

Not PaPa Joe. This could turn out to be worse than the coverup in the Roman Catholic Church.

I read one comment by either the police or prosecutor that said that although Joe followed the protocol as far as the law was concerned, it was morally incomprehensible that he did not contact the police as well. Wouldn't you wonder and do a follow up if you had reported the alleged rape of a child to the higher ups, and then were not curious as to what was being done about the allegation?

This smells like a cover-up that includes the coach.

Don't know the laws in Pa. but in Ca a teacher is requited to notify CPS (child protective services) of any reasonable suspicion of child abuse. Telling his supervisor would not be enough.

Who would not report first to the police. The response should have been an immediate call to the police then follow the school protocol

Yea I know. Who wouldn't?The police would be the first phone call I would make.

I think this was a planned cover-up with Joe up to his eyeballs in it and the excuse he did all he could do by telling hsi bosses is just BS. The guy is a state hero and untouchable. What POS he turned out to be.
