Evangelical leaders alarmed at Romney candidacy; interesting

WASHINGTON -- The loudest objections to Mitt Romney's Mormonism have not yet been raised, according to evangelical leaders and conservatives.

One month ago, an attack on Romney's faith by a Texas pastor supporting Texas Gov. Rick Perry renewed talk that Romney, who was a high-ranking official in the Mormon church from 1981 to 1994, would lose large chunks of the evangelical vote because of his faith.

That may prove true in Iowa, the first state in the Republican presidential primary process. And Romney's faith does give many protestants pause. But polls, and evangelical leaders, tell another story: If the former Massachusetts governor is the Republican nominee, his faith may be attacked and questioned more aggressively by liberals in the general election than it has been by conservatives in the primary.

Apparently the evangelicals are concerned with Romney's choice of religion than the values he displays in his life. Regardless, the republican candidate faces an uphill battle in a party that has been dominated in recent years by far right evangelical voters.

Will they follow their heads or allow religious prejudices to determine who they vote for?

And the even bigger question is this. Will the liberals stoop so low that they attack the fellas religion and use it as a wedge issue in the campaign.

I find both questions and possibilities revolting.

Question 1 - They will allow their religious prejudices to determine who they vote for. Pat won't vote for Romney based on the underwear he uses.

Question 2 - Without a doubt.

I tend to agree with you Jim.

Remember when John Kennedy and his fellow Catholics were under fire for merely being Catholics in faith?

Not to be judgmental, but how does one who professes faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and by doing so enjoin themselves in His teachings and union, justify this form of bigotry and sin?

Mike,

They same way that they fought so many religious wars. I wonder how many people have been slaughtered in the name of Jesus, and all the rest of the "loving" Gods?

I don't believe you, I, or the rest of the forum and readers really want an answer to that question. One would be too many. It's too depressing to consider the truth of the matter.

Religion's not the problem, politicization of religion into colluding with government, just like politicizing business into colluding with government, is.

Yes to both questions, they will stoop so low. By they I mean the political campaigns, not the people, who should vote as their conscience dictates.

The liberals will do that only if they have learned how to from the Republican right wingers over the last 50 years beginning with JFK..
