Mike I watched a show on PBS tonight about the Bible. It was about the struggle to make it available in the English language and the resistance of the Catholic church of the day to allow that. I must admit i am rather ignorant on the matter. Does the Catholic church still discourage anyone from reading and/or interpreting the bible on their own and insisting it be done via church hierachy at Mass, etc? I don't imagine it does, but I am curious. |

Latin was the prevailing language in the church, and it was not so much a conspiracy to prevent the bible from being made available in English, as it was to preserve tradition and accuracy. As far as interpreting the bible is concerned. The church does not discourage reading the bible, but it does have guidelines that one should follow. |
