NASA has just begun taking pictures of the Sun with its latest new toy, the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Most telescopes cannot be used to look at the Sun, as it would completely overpower them, but this one is especially designed to tone down the brightest areas and zoom in for very fine detail. Here is the first overall picture of our Sun, in far more detail than has ever been observed:
