This should be pinned to the top so others are forwarned...

Creationist trolls
Quote:

The appeal in arguing against a creationist troll is obvious.

You have a wealth of knowledge pertaining to evolution and a thorough understanding of all the issues that a Creationist can bring up as potential arguments.

You also know that for each point you debunk, you validate your own belief and leave the Creationist in bewilderment, at least momentarily.

This is enjoyable for both sides because the exchange is fairly received and fairly given on both sides. It is intellectually stimulating and leads to growth.

***

There is then a sharp difference in dealing with a troll. A troll is someone who does not make an argument, but simply runs his mouth off, looking for attention and hoping to be noticed. They fill the forums with spam because they always have to have the last word.

Which is why the golden rule for any good forum is "Don't feed the trolls".

Do not feed the trolls.

Now, how can you judge when you come across a Creationist-Troll hybrid?

Ask yourself these simple questions:

1. Is this person open to learning and correcting his ideas if wrong?

If this person will seek any method to gloss over, ignore, or distort the situation, just to stick by his claim, then you have a troll.

2. Is this person making claims that are logical, backed with data, and demonstrate intelligence?

If this person is spouting nonsense, not using logic, making blanket accusations and allegations, then you have a troll.

3. Is this person contributing to the forum by posting what he or she posts?

If this person is copying and pasting random garbage, not directly responding to points with understanding and clarity, or being obnoxious, then you have a troll.

It is important to distinguish people you should respond to, and people who are trolls. It may be fun to argue with a troll in the beginning, but it is an illusion. You are not getting any point through, because the troll does not listen, it only phrases its garbage as if though it is responding to you.

The number 1 rule on any forum is "Don't feed the trolls". If you want the troll to leave, you must not feed the troll. If 10 people refuse to feed the troll, but one person does, all that hard work is negated, and the troll stays on the forum for yet another day.

Don't feed the troll. Please do not feed the troll. It may be irresistible to feed the troll, but you must not feed the troll. You may talk ABOUT the troll. Do not talk TO the troll. The troll might use tricks to get you to feed it. You must remember:

Do not feed the troll.

A good troll takes some intelligence and creativity. Breezy has, as yet, shown neither.

Cuttin' and pastin' ain't trolling - not even close.

Nah, I'm sticking with troll. I'm not concerned with chasing him off, it's too much fun.

It would be more fun if he expressed either some originality or spoke for himself. Too much to ask, I expect.

Like I say, he did, you go back far enough. Discussions were brief, to the point, honest. Then Jackie prompted him to set his hooks, and when he did, I called him on it, and, busted, he went into this pasting tirade, hiding behind other men's words. A good refresher course on the vagaries of creationism and other arguments for God. I think today he's mad because I bumped his failed promise.

I've never had the desire to go back to the beginning of this - the latter part is bad enough!

Of course he failed his promise. It was an impossible promise to keep since there is no evidence supporting the young earth creationist dogma.

So your game is to play with those who believe sincerely that you are wrong and doomed to hell. And label others trolls when you can't even prove where your own mind came from. How interesting.

And your game, Mike, is to pick sides and favorites?

This has nothing to do with beliefs, Mike, this has to do with some trolling for emotional reactions. Why would someone sincere in their faith play such games?

The mind comes from the brain.

I witness trolling for emotional reactions quite a bit here and in the rest of my life Chris. I think it is representative of human nature wrapped up in insecurity. The need to be recognized even if the vehicle used is annoying.
