PALM SPRINGS MIDDLE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Dear Parents: We would like to welcome your son/daughter to our physical education program at Palm Springs Middle. In compliance with Title IX, all activities (except contact sports) are offered to both boys and girls. Students will be grouped by grade level whenever possible, and provided with a variety of team, individual, and lifetime activities. In order to insure the success of our program and of your child, we would like to review our policies, rules, and procedures with you. 1. DRESSING OUT – Wearing the proper physical education uniform is required every day. We feel that if a student is well enough to attend school, he/she should dress out and participate in class. If a note is sent from home, the student will dress out, but not be required to actively participate. To be excused from class participation for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required. 2. LOCKS – Combination locks will be sold for $3.50. Locks may be purchased during class time on specific dates. NO KEY LOCKS ARE PERMITTED. If a student has a lock from the previous year, it may be used again. Other locks will be cut off. Our lockers are not to be used as book or clothing storage. 3. UNIFORMS – Physical education uniforms will be sold at the school throughout the school year. PRICES: Shorts …………… $8.00 Shirts ……………. $5.00 _________ Both ……………. $13.00 PAYMENT MUST BE MADE IN CASH ONLY. CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. 4. DETENTIONS - Detentions will be assigned for student misconduct. If a student fails to serve a detention, an extra detention must be served. If the student fails to serve both detentions, he will be referred to the administration for further disciplinary action. 5. GRADING POLICY – Not dressing out in the proper physical education uniform will lower the students’ grades and can lead to failure in the class. Many areas are taken into consideration when grades are issued, but particular emphasis is placed on dressing out and class participation. The following illustrates the consequences of not dressing out. Times not Dressed out Grade Deduction 0 to ½ No grade deduction 1 to 1 ½ Highest grade B 2 to 2 ½ Highest grade C 3 to 3 ½ Highest grade D 4 or more FAILURE 6. MAKE-UPS - There will be one day at the end of every nine week grading period where the students can “make-up” their no-dresses. This is to give the students an opportunity to improve their grades. The coaches will announce which day this is in the eighth week of the nine weeks. 7. ABSENCES – It is the students’ responsibility to give admits and excuses to the teachers. If no admit is provided, the absence will be considered unsatisfactory. 8. MEDICAL CONDITIONS – If there is any health problem or medical condition that prevents a student from participating in physical education (asthma, diabetes, heart condition, back problems, or epilepsy), the teacher must be notified ! 9. VANDALISM – Any act of vandalism (kicking/breaking lockers or the Gatorade machine, writing on school property, etc.) will lead to disciplinary action. All students are responsible for their own property and valuables and should leave others’ property alone. 10. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS – All students must report directly to their assigned areas for roll call. Students are not to use any equipment or apparatus, nor participate in any physical activity, unless supervised and instructed by a teacher. CLASS RULES AND PROCEDURES 1. Write your name on your uniform, lock all your belongings in your locker, including your cell phones. If you take your cell phone out to the field it will be confiscated and turned into the administration. There are enough lockers for every student so do not share lockers, or give your combination to anyone. 2. DO NOT write anything else (graffiti) on your physical education uniform, only your name. Also do not cut, alter or modify your uniform in any way. If you do, you may be asked to purchase an appropriate uniform. 3. Undershirts are not to be worn under the uniform shirt. 4. Cut, ripped or severely damaged uniforms are not to be used in class. If it happens during class, see one of the coaches to get a temporary replacement. 5. No Gatorade is to be purchased before class; you may only buy Gatorade during break time and at the end of class. DO NOT take Gatorade bottles outside of the locker rooms. 6. Be on time to class, get dressed, report to the courts and sit down on your spot for roll call. NO HORSEPLAYING. 7. At the end of class, exit out the front door of the locker rooms and stay in the spill-out area until the bell rings. Middle block classes line up for lunch in an orderly manner under the shelter out back. 8. Make sure your shorts are in the proper position (not below the waist) at all times. A. First time offenders will be assigned work detail on the P.E. field, F in conduct for the day. B. Second time is C.S.I., parents notified and an F in conduct for the day. C. Third time will result in outdoor suspension, parent conference, and an F in conduct for the day. 9. Do not touch or take things that are not yours. If you do so, you will be taken out of physical education and placed in another class, a referral will be written and further administrative action will be taken. Please review these rules with your child, so that we can concentrate more on the program and less on discipline issues. We hope, with your help to have another successful school year, filled with activities and in the safety of a well organized program.
