Mark 2: The Genwaku Assassination The weeks flew by as Iris learned to fly on dragon-back. The red dragon she had bested when she first came to the island two months ago was now her mighty steed. It was commonplace for the bandits to ride dragons on their homeland but it was forbidden outside the expanse of the island. Dragon's were rare but not unheard of in the world of mythical creatures. The ones maintained by the Sanguine Sky were just a flashy threat to anyone who might tred on their land. Although the dragons were indeed strong there were very few of them who weren't afraid of combat. The majority of the creatures had been kept for breeding purposes only but the few capable of fighting were taken for mounts by the officers of the clan. Iris had just finished her daily patrol of the island when as she returned from her flight Elba was waiting for her in the Dragon's Den. "How goes training Luitenant?" Elba asked, "Have you become accustomed to the sky yet? I'd heard rumors of your flight training being troublesome." "Those were very short times. Naiboushi wasn't permanently blind but she recovered quickly enough. The wound healed but a scar will remain from my strike." (The name Naiboushi is a mix of 2 words in japanese Nai meaning dead, and boushi meaning eye.) Iris finished putting Naiboushi back in her stable block and dismounted and began walking the corridoors with Elba. "It's been awhile since you approached me one on one, don't trust your own messangers now?" Iris asked Elba as they passed a painting featuring an old Etreum King. "No I just wanted to see if the expression you had from when you arrived has changed at all. You've finished your training and now I'm ready to put you to the test. There has been some... trouble... in Etreum as of lately. One of the platoon commanders, Kai, has been doing very well on the battlefield and been making a name for himself and his men. The battles he fights are ones that he should not be capable of winning, yet he always emerges victorious. Sounds interesting doesn't it?" "Sounds like he knows how to fight a war." Iris responded. "Very much so, but I believe he isn't as skilled as the reports say. Unfortunately the body counts don't lie, and in his last encounter he killed roughly 200 men with his platoon of 20. He only lost three soldiers, one of which was our spy withing the Etreum army. Before we lost contact with him he mentioned that the commander had become filled with bloodlust. A man with that kind of prowess on the battlefield will soon be taken from the frontlines and be given special duties. He could be very problematic for the enemies of Etreum and the world is not in a place for a single kingdom to reign supreme." "But you said that you don't think he's as skilled as the reports say he is?" Iris inquired. As they continued to walk through the caverns they came upon the medical wing where the wounded spy lay in a bed recovering. A vicious wound crossed his chest from shoulder to hip. Elba walks over to the bed and checks the progress of recovery, "Kai wasn't always a skilled warrior, strong but not in the normal sense. His strength was in teamwork and overcoming odds but the reports from the last battle stated that his team was his backup and he fought back the opposing army almost single handedly." The man on the bed began to awaken from his sleep and looked up to Elba. "This is Sable, he's my brother and a colonel of our recon team. He brought back information that you might find useful." With some help from Elba, Sable sat up in his bed and looked up at Iris. "Nice to see you again Luitenant." Iris nodded back at Sable and Elba continued with his rant, "Sable tells me that recently Kai procured a katana made from outside of Etrums armies. Since then he has become a bloodthirsty swordsman fearing nothing and moving with such fluid motions on the battlefield that it's almost as if he becomes another person." Elba backed off from the bed as Sable continued the speech, "He wasn't able to fight like that before. He usually stood back and covered the rear like a coward, but he was gifted with strategy and we were usually victorious. Now his swordsmanship more resembles that of a demon ruthlessly slaughtering anyone in his way. He has no fear of death and no care for his own men." Iris changed her glance from Sable over to Elba, "A cursed blade, bringing forth a demons power and ruthlessness while still clinging to the cunningness of his former master." Elba nodded, "He must be taken out before he is allowed to move into the shadows." Sable lays back down in his bed before speaking, "At night he always sneaks out of the barracks and finds a secluded spot in the woods. He uses this time to commune with the blade and strengthen his bond with the demon held captive within it. Even the higher ups in Etreum are beginning to fear him." Elba covers Sable up with blankets and returns a glance to Iris as Sable falls back to sleep, "Etreum has given him a new mission to test out first hand how strong he's become. His goal is to raise the small but fortified city of Belfry just outside of Etreum's territory with just 50 men. This will be our last chance to pursue him openly." Iris nods at Elba, "So how do you want me to handle this?" "You have two objectives with this assignment. First he must suffer a death befitting a demon." Iris continues staring at Elba as if to say "go on". "The second being that you must make his death 'Flashy', we want to incite a little bit of fear into Etreum so they don't attempt to pursue pushing their borders further." Iris looks back at Sable and pauses before speaking again, "Would the Etreum military really see it as a sign of fear if one of their 'Toy Soldiers' just happened to die in a flashy way?" Elba answered Iris, "Probably not, hence why I need you. Most of my men are known by face as pillagers or bandits, your face is relatively unknown. I have already contacted the army officials in Belfry and warned them of an incoming attack, I also sent note to the leader inside Belfry that my top mercenary is being sent to the front lines to prepare the cities defenses." Iris chuckles a little bit, "I am but a Lieutenant in your army though, am I going to be accompanying someone and playing backup?" Elba shakes his head, "On the contrary, my connections cross many borders, I am a council of the Etreum special Forces, as well as many of their border states. I have very little power to change things inside Etreum with as strong as their government is, but withing the Sanguine Sky I have enough power and fear to alter the course of wars." Iris nods in acknowledgment, "So the leader of Belfry is a pawn." Elba begins to go on another rant, "The leader of Belfry believes that the 'Twilight Rain' is his ally and thus requested reinforcements. To him we are a small branch of mercenaries goverened by no law except for who has the biggest wallet." "Twilight Rain?" Iris asked. Elba grabbed Iris by the shoulders, "You are Twilight Rain, from here on out you are going to be the head of the platoon withing the Sanguine Sky knows as Twilight Rain. Your squad will carry out assassinations, fight in wars, and be an up and coming face of fearful mercenaries." Iris again looked at Elba in confusion, "You are but a mask, I want Twilight Rain to become feared as a force to be reckoned with. With enough time and precise attacks I will make the worlds governments fear that they cannot survive without the help of mercenaries, the majority of which will be controlled by me through the Sanguine Sky." Iris mumbles a laugh under her breath, "You are a deviant leader, this sounds like it will be some fun." Edited by Rayn, Aug 22 2010, 06:02 AM.
