To be absolutely and completely fair, I would say that P4A's story can stand on its own. I will say that the lack of emotional attachment to the characters would have it to where you lose something, but it wouldn't be a killer of all things. There are nods to events and things that you would get if you played P3/P4, but they won't stop you from enjoying the game if you don't understand. If you're not an RPG type of person and aren't able to dedicate the time to go through P3/P4, and you are interested in the fighting game, go for it.

Story-wise, the game takes place some time after Persona 4, which took place after Persona 3. It mainly exists in the Persona 4 'environment' so to speak while it has tie-ins to Persona 3 (because the two worlds are the same) and the first character interaction between the Persona 3 and Persona 4 cast. It introduces a new character related to a character from Persona 3, and you'll have a deeper connection with her if you already know the Persona 3 character, but even without knowing, the new character's story is still very well written and emotional.

And a tip if you're going to play the story mode, pick one of the main four cast (Yu, Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko) and play through their story, then from that point, every time you reach a break point, the game will tell you you've unlocked new character stories. Pick one of the new ones you just unlocked every time you unlock some for the best effect. The reason for this is all of the stories are connected but some of them have a LOT of overlap with the others. Most notably Yu/Yosuke/Chie/Yukiko and Mitsuru/Aigis/Akihiko. And you don't wanna play the same thing three or four times in a row. But you'll wanna go back and play them eventually by the time you're through.

Beyond all of that, you could just play the fighting game and never touch story mode and appreciate it as a fighter. Play challenge mode to learn the fighters and score attack for an AI challenge. Then if you do play P3/P4 at some point in the future you can play the story mode to fully appreciate it. But then again missing out on Labrys's story mode almost invalidates playing P4A at all in my opinion. The choice is yours.

With P4A, it spoils some things from P4 and some things from P3. With P4, it doesn't spoil the big mystery in it, but it does spoil events that happen later on in the game. In regards to P3 however, I think it hints at some bigger spoilers. I can't say for sure (haven't played P3 yet), yet I think one of the stories hints at the big spoiler for P3.

Other than that, Jukain is spot on for the rest of it. P4A is mostly self contained, though you'll understand the characters more and be better attached to them having played the games first.

That's the big thing, it -hints- at spoilers but because the game assumes you already know it doesn't just tell them to you outright. I can't say for sure because I -did- play P3/P4 before P4A, but I don't recall anything being spelled out for me in P4A that I would have been spoiled for in P3/P4 without knowing full context.

Well here's what I can remember off the top of my head (though I've yet to finish every story mode in P4A):

Persona 4 Spoilers

Persona 3 Spoilers (probably)

P4

P3

@Gabe if you're not reading these (which I don't recommend you do really) - be wary of Elizabeth's story if you plan on playing Persona 3, which I really still think you should. Easily available on PS3 on the store.

Gabe should play VIII before any Persona game.

It's the Dragon Age 2 of Final Fantasy!

I still hold firm that Two is the worst Final Fantasy... By quite a long distance.

Come to think of it... this is the first time I remember seeing II mentioned on a board that isn't dedicated to it.

Why do you guys dislike it so much?

I only played it once... and I'd be lying if I said I remember much about it.

That's exactly the point, Sero.

It's just so damn forgettable. The plot sucks, the characters suck, the leveling system sucks, the plot progression sucks...

Well put. After playing, and surprisingly enjoying the first, I couldn't wait to play the second... Ugh...

To be fair, I liked the idea in II about leveling up things you do versus actually just leveling up. It was an interesting concept that could be exploited to all hell (-cough Final Fantasy VIII cough-) but it made practical sense. It's like if you swing a sword 1000 times, you're gonna get pretty damn good at swinging that sword. The 1000th time you cast Bolt2, I'm sure you've mastered the craft by now.

And then, though the game itself is pretty forgettable, we have this unforgettable relic:

But overall it's just kind of the 'meh' game. Because by the time we got it in the US, we had already experienced IV and VI, and II just couldn't live up to that legacy.
