Anyone know anything about cats?

So I just realized my wife's cat is missing several teeth that were there at least a few days ago.

I'm wondering if I should be concerned for the creature and take him in to get him looked at or if this just happens with them sometimes. As far as I can personally tell there doesn't seem to be anything wrong beyond randomly missing teeth. I should also add I've paid to have them cleaned several times so it isn't like they were rotting out of his head.

My wife would be utterly crushed if anything happened to him... but I REALLY don't need that expense right now. I know literally nothing about cats or their health. Thoughts?

Well cats have two sets of teeth like people do... so if it hasn't lost its teeth to get its adult teeth yet, that could be perfectly normal. If it's losing its adult teeth, then you might wanna have that checked out.

Well, she's had him since before we ever met.

He'll be 13 this year apparently. I didn't even realize he was that old...

Well that is a bit older for a cat to be losing teeth. I'd see a vet to be sure there's not an infection or anything like that.

Same really.

In this case though I'm mostly worried about my wife. She is attached to him like I am my dogs and I know how much it sucks to see a beloved friend's health fail.

I'll just take him in. Even if nothing is wrong it'd be worth it for her peace of mind.

Good idea...better to be safe than sorry.

My baby girl is turning 12 in a week...I'd be devastated if she was ill. Thankfully, she still acts like a kitten. :-)

Nice.

I've actually noticed this one is starting to slow down finally in the last year or so.

Cat's don't actually use their teeth much for eating, most of that maw is used to kill shit, it's the rough tongue that debones most of their food. Of course this can lead to problems when you feed them dry food. Switching to wet food for older cats is usually preferable to expensive pet dentistry.

My first reaction was concern, but after Googling around a bit, a few links implied it wasn't too bad.

Not too sure what to suggest here, I hope your cat is back to normal soon, bud.

@ HW: We tried to get him on wet food a year or two ago and he decided he'd rather starve than eat it. Maybe if his mouth is giving him issues while eating dry he'll be a bit more receptive to it... I guess we'll try that again too. Can't hurt anything.

@ Focian: Thanks for the links. A little more searching on my own and it seems extremely common for them to lose a tooth at random, but I'm a bit concerned over 2-3 in the span of a couple days. Going to take him in just to be sure. My wife is already freaked about it.

Better to have taken him to the vets when not needing to, than to not when he did need it.

Try different types of wet food - some cats can be quite particular.

And you're lucky - I have to give my little girl wet food to keep weight on her (she's always been about 8-9 pounds at the most) and now she gets quite demanding, albeit in cute ways. She's never been very vocal, but now she'll "sing" for her dinner. :-)

Didn't you post a video of that once? She's a good looking cat from what I remember. Looked very well taken care of.

Cat update: he's fine - they couldn't find anything wrong with him; he's apparently in extremely good shape for a cat his age. We're still cycling through a few brands of wet food trying to get him to cooperate but no luck so far.

So, his health is at least one thing going smoothly.

That's wonderful news! I'm glad to hear that his health is in good standing... it didn't hurt to be cautious, though.

Hopefully he can be cooperative and find a wet food he can deal with...
