I was thinking earlier about game mascots. It seems they've been around for quite awhile. Mario has always been a champion for Nintendo, Sonic (Res just popped a boner) doing the same for Sega. Solid Snake has been there for Konami, while Mega Man and Ryu of Street Fighter were always there for Capcom. Even today. Master Chief and Marcus Fenix, Nathan Drake and Kratos. And many more. So... My question is this: What mascot did the most for their company and why? I have to go with Mega Man and what he did for Capcom. Fans were outraged he wasn't in Marvel VS Capcom 3 (although that's related to Inafune's ugly departure). The Blue Bomber has been in pretty much every genre as well, something not many other mascots can say. He was in a soccer game, fighting games, he's had a racing game, arcade games, RPGs... He's got over 100 titles under his belt. I don't think there's another character in gaming history that can claim that. (And Sero hasn't played a single title.) |

Sonic IS Sega at this point. At times, they seemingly forget they have a catalog of great IP's going back decades. So I guess in hindsight he was the worst thing to happen to them.... |

I have to go with Mario just because of his familiarity with so many people old and young. |

Sega has forgotten about a lot of their former key franchises and immsensely popular titles/characters. Skies of Arcadia Shenmue Streets of Rage And that's just in the "S" file. Fans haven't forgotten, though. So what mascots have done the most, Aru? |

I think I'd have to go with Pikachu for Pokemon. No one doesn't know Pikachu. |

I think Mario has lots of games under his belt too. Sonic as well. On top of that Sonic has four cartoons and multiple comics. Not sure how much of these make money for Sega though and obviously the games only get them so much money regardless of it's general acceptance. Of course both Megaman and Mario have had their share of comics and cartoons as well but neither has been as successful as the Sonic stuff as far as I know. The Archie Sonic comic has been going consistently for as long as the series has been around and the old cartoons are still talked about with love to this day. I'd say that Sonic has done far more than most mascots, even if not for the company but for the fans. |

Done the most for their company? I'd say Sonic as well. Hell, I consider myself a big Sega fan...and my Dad, who ever worked for 'em, when we play Sega All Stars Racing and Sega Tennis we find ourselves saying "woah, I forgot that game existed" Sega forgot everything but Sonic this gen =P and rereleasing Crazy Taxi 1241515 times. Master Chief is pretty much the mascot of this entire gen, though. Even though he came from last gen...I mean the reaction from fans when he showed in the first Halo 4 trailer was unmatched by any reveal I've seen in a long time. It reminded me of the Twilight Princess reveal. |

Cloud for Final Fantasy -- everyone and their mother knows who Cloud is. You could make the worst game ever, put Cloud in it, and people will buy it. See also Ehrgeiz: God Bless The Ring. |

Gotta be Mario. He is the cornerstone of Nintendo and according to a recent study, he is more recognizable worldwide than mickey mouse. You can't really beat that one. Do you think N would survive on Zelda alone? |

Mega Fucking Man Sure, Mario is more recognizable. The McDonalds "M" is recognizable, doesn't mean it's great. |

Megaman did so much for Capcom that they decided to abandon his ass ages ago. Ryu and Ken have made that company infinitely more money than the blue bomber ever will. |

Gotta agree that since Street Fighter II, Ken and Ryu are the faces of Capcom. Mega Man was the shit in the 80's though. |

Alright, here's my take on who's done the most for what companies: Nintendo - Mario, hands-down. They made playing cards, then a few little novelty machines like a love tester and such before they made a game with a carpenter trying to save a woman from a big monkey (thank god they made that mistake of a donkey being a monkey, and a monkey being a donkey.) Quick switch to plumber, have another game or two, and you've got a massively recognizable icon by anyone who's probably under the age of 70 nowadays. Sega - Sonic's about the only widely-appealing, widely-known character they have. Even moving to still well-known but lesser IPs, you lose a lot of people. Rappies are damn near the chocobos of the Phantasy Star world, but unless someone played those games, they don't know what they're looking at - some kind of yellow chicken, or something. Sony - I'd have to guess, despite them not being owned by Sony, Cloud from FF7. I can't imagine how many systems that game probably moved the year it came out, and helped Sony make its mark on the industry. Crash Bandicoot was definitely the "Sony Mascot" for a while there, being in tons of Sony commercials, but I think it's actually a non-Sony-owned character that did them the most favors. Microsoft - Master Chief, hands-down. I mean, the Xbox sustained itself really well with just the original Halo game for a while. He's pretty much the face of the Xbox, despite never removing his helmet. Capcom - This is a tough call here. Mega Man definitely was iconic for a long time, but with recent generations he's been shoved out of the limelight by characters such as Dante and several Street Fighter characters. I'd still argue that Mega Man gave Capcom a big foot on the home console market. If you're looking at them from an arcade viewpoint, then definitely Street Fighter and its spinoff games. Squaresoft / Square-Enix - Again, probably Cloud Strife from FF7. Square had some stuff on older systems, hit a bit of a peak on SNES with RPG fans, but FF7 made it popular with non-RPG fans, and it just kind of skyrocketed from there. It hit a crash after 8 and 9, but I think the merger happened and they had a few other projects. Still, I'd say FF7 probably brought it to the most people who weren't familiar with them beforehand. Konami - The guys from Contra. Not even really them, so much, as the code that actually has become known as The Contra Code. Hell, it was even in Wreck-It Ralph. If an actual character is needed, then I'm tempted to say three-way tie between Simon Belmont, Solid Snake, and the town of Silent Hill. I can't think of any other game companies I might have missed that are "big-name companies" that have a singular iconic character. Valve and Gordon Freeman, maybe...? |

I'll definitely agree that Mario is more important to Nintendo than MM is to Capcom. However, Cal, I've got to disagree on Cloud for Square. Instead, I'd have to go with this little guy:

He's iconic for sure, but I don't think he did as much. I'm not a big FF7 fan nowadays, but I think he's done more for the company than any FF character before that. And the guys from King's Knight, if we're counting those guys, too (yeah, that's a Square-made shoot-em-up.) |

But I argue that the Black Mage is so iconic that he's been in... how many games now? How many Jobs are still based around the design? How many other characters? Half of Final Fantasy IX is based off the very idea of the Black Mage. |
