How video games take over; a funny observation

So yeah, my 6 year old son, while he loves to play video games, actually does seem to enjoying playing with toys even more.

He has lately taken to playing with his large box of various action figures and playsets, a castle being his favorite, with our 3 year old daughter. It's always funny listening to them play, as he structures these play sessions after video games.

He always tells my daughter to wait as he "sets up the levels", and always asks what difficulty she wants to play : "easy, normal, hard or master ninja." Depending on which she picks will affect which action figures he sets up on the play set to battle. He will add various sub bosses, bosses, and accesories (armor/weapons) on the bad guys to make it more difficult.

The best part is, to start the level, my daughter must visit the "shop" and buy which characters and weapons to use on the level.

I'm not making this up I swear!

Probably the funniest part, is when they battle, my daughter has sort of a battle cry and goes YA! YA! YA! YA! YA! and all I can think of is Gorilla.....haha.

good stuff

That's awesome! My son always used to do the thing in Goldeneye (N64) where when the enemies die and drop to their knees, then fall over face first.

Though, they could be like me, my brother, and a guy friend of mine when we were young. We played our own version of The Legend of Zelda. I was Zelda, my brother Ganon, and the friend Link. Basically, the game was that they'd just beat the crap out of each other while I watched. :D

Yeah - my son loves to watch me play master ninja mode of Ninja Gaiden 2. He loves how they change things up from mode to mode. He usually plays mission mode, and will play on Acolyte and on the rare occasion warrior. I have a save file on every level of acolyte when he is in the mood to traverse a level.

Bless my wife - not only does she encourage (not just tolerate) my video game addiction, she puts up with my influence on my son by letting him play M rated games. Really, it's not a bad influence on them at all so long as you monitor it. He only plays E rated stuff when I am not around, but usually he just doesn't even play games if I am not there. But, I feel like I hit the lottery with my family. My wife is a great mother, a great cook, makes a good wage in a very secure industry (healthcare), and is on top of our childrens education and general well being. They are extremely well behaved around other people. They leave their bad behavior at home...haha. And for giving birth to two beautiful, healthy children, she is still quite the looker for her mid 30's age. We will celebrate our 10 year anniversary in a few months - by heading to NYC and getting some ink!

now just imagine my daughter go....YAYAYAYAY as she clangs together action figures with my son.

And the wife, it's funny how clothes make the looks. I'm so used to her looking like a plain Jane with her hair up and dressed in hospital scrubs. Such an unflattering wardrobe. So, whenever she gets the chance, she buys nice clothes and dolls up for me.

That's pretty damn awesome :)

On the subject of how video games can take over - I'm spending heaps of time on swtor when I get a chance to play, pretty much focused on the pvp, it's a pretty addictive game.

We must make more children and give them more games to play, and soon we will have a multi-generation army. At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge.

On a funny note : my son really hasn't gamed much at all lately - his newest obsession is Magic cards.

Now, when he plays with his action figures, it's all about the elemental types and stats. This creature has flying, or first strike, or haste - and is a 10/10 green with trample. Funny stuff. At least he color codes with figures with the right elemental type.

I've always wanted to try Magic but never got around to getting a starter deck.

Mike, you really did hit the jackpot with a family like that. I only hope I can get as lucky. I don't want a life partner who's gonna just tolerate my gaming, I want one that will love that part of me (even if she's not a gamer herself) because my core essence is as a gamer and I would never give that up for someone else just because they don't like it.

Yeah, I am lucky.

The wife doesn't hate games, but has no real interest in playing anything past and occasional round of Tekken. But, she encourages the hobby for me, cause she knows it will keep me home. She knows all about my asian skirt chasing past....haha.

She's been good accepting the fact I let my son him play some rated M stuff, but since he handles it so well, it's not an issue. As I said, in fact, he's not really even into video games at this point.

The main reason I am lucky is due to my wife's sleep schedule. Most nights she is asleep by 9pm, giving me the gaming time I need. We don't have to fight over what we do at that hour.

I try to remember that I was, in fact, once a child....who like to play with toys.

I'm so bad, I got my son all excited to play a game last night - Demon's Souls. They set the world to white tendency for a week to celebrate the digital release of the game. Of course, I was a day early so he was mad at me - and made me play against his black magic deck. Hopefully this week I can see some of the stuff that was locked up in Demons' Souls, maybe even beat Old False King Allant. I dont get the white/gray/black tendency thing.

Based on what I see, on both mine and Charlie's profile, our tendencies are always white, yet the doors are locked. I don't understand how else it shifts. I think the last time they set it white, I was able to fight executioner mirilda on the first level of the Boletarian Castle, and also met a character at the beginning of another level.
