In light of recent events I've come to notice something: My problems with the bathroom, having to spend 15-30+ minutes in the bathroom because I have trouble actually going more often than not, are more than likely a result of my terrible diet. I eat too much and I eat too many things that cause more problems than good in my intestinal track. So, I want to make it clear that I ask this not as a method of losing weight (though that would be a plus) but rather general physical health and focusing on the bathroom problems. Any of you guys who know what kinds of foods I should be looking for, drinks too, that will help me in this matter. I'm not looking for something temporary either, I want it to be something I can do permanently so recipes for making terrible ingredients (carrots and celery, for example) into tasty foods. I'm NOT a fan of veggies usually but part of that might be the fact that I don't really know how to cook or how to make veggies into something tasty rather than just eating them as they are. |

I have nothing to contribute to this topic! I eat badly. Though I do love vegetables, and salads and stuff. Thing is, I like a nice salad. then a bunch of unhealthy stuff after that! |

Well...do you like fruits? Also have you tried steaming vegetables? I usually don't like veggies all that much, but steamed broccoli and carrots with some pepper on them....delicious. You also might want to put extra fiber in your diet, cereals and many types of bread have a lot of fiber. As for drinks, you can't beat tea and water, a little coffee isn't bad either. |

Resulli I think vegetables can be an acquired taste. Practice maybe? Just eat some raw vegetables or maybe eat it with some dip, then try to cut back on the dip. That's how I got started on veggies, now I'll eat the shit out of carrots or celery or others... Still need dip for cauliflower. Or spinach... I'll eat it most often in a souffle but not a big fan of it otherwise. Though thinking about it now I kind of would like some hot spinach. |

Eating more often but smaller portions may help. Also, these look like pretty good tips- http://www.metamucil.com/healthy-habits.php |

drink lots and lots, and then a little more on top of that, of water. And yes, fiber will help clean out those pipes. |

Your bathroom problems are likely due to a lack of fiber in your diet. And, while I know you've professed your love for it in the past, cutting out fast food would be really good. There's...not a whole lot in there nutritionally for you, and it's overloading you on certain vitamins and minerals, and too much is a bad thing. Start out by making small changes at first. For example, whole grain bread instead of white, or just whole wheat. Soda is also probably a good thing to cut out. If you're at a restaurant and you have the option for soda, opt for something else instead. Stick with plain water or get some tea if they have it. For an ideal diet, you actually want what Paka mentioned. That is, eating more often, but with smaller portions. An optimal diet focuses on carbohydrates and plant based foods. The ratio of food intake should be about 45-65% carbohydrates, <30% fat, and 10-15% protein for all the calories that you consume. Look good ways to combine veggies with the things you do like. For instance, if you eat eggs in the morning, consider adding in some spinach or broccoli, and some onions to the eggs to add some vegetables in. If you go out to eat, consider getting a salad rather than a burger. For example, Wendy's has a apple pecan chicken salad which has, in addition to what the name has, blue cheese and cranberries on a green leafy base with pomegranate vinaigrette dressing. It's really good! Consider trying some new foods as well. Pad Thai is relatively easy to make and almost any vegetable can be put in there. There are also vegetarian lasagnas out there that are really good. A friend and I made a vegan one last year that was just as good as all other lasagnas I've had. Another delicious recipe that I can share with you is my mom's homemade chicken veggie soup. One of the best and most flavorful soups that I've ever had. Plus it's got lots of veggies in it and it's pretty good for you. The important thing to begin focusing your diet on is fruits, veggies (but make sure to get a variety of veggies. Dark leafy green veggies are really good for you, but often overlooked. Get a balance and variety of ones), legumes (beans), nuts, and whole grains. This isn't to say that you need to cut out on meats and fats, just reduce them. While this doesn't make me an expert, I've just recently gone through an extensive nutrition course, and my cousin is about to get her PhD in nutrition. So I can hook you up.

Res, to really aid yourself, you need to understand that vegies are "yucky" because we bathe in salty diets. What you need to do, is cut your junk for a while. There's still plenty to eat in terms of fruit and breads. Junk food doesn't really taste good, and becomes an aquired taste. this you'll notice when you haven't had it for a while. The reverse goes with vegies. I'm not a fan of vegies either, but cook them right and they're delicious. But eat them after a bag of chips and they're vile. You're smart to think of this now. you're in your very early 20s and you don't want to start life with bowel problems |

Best advice ever. I cut the junk a few months ago... Warning: Blog Incoming... <had a bad year last year, added 10kg to my fat ass - worst thing was that I had taken off 20kg in the years before - last year I was feeling great, then I moved back to Scotland and started to pile on the pounds again... Scottish food isn't exactly healthy... Anyway, with the recent move to Northern Ireland I decided to start anew>... And so, cut the salt first and foremost. These days I hardly eat any salt. My wife and I make our own bread (breadmaker - just flour, water, yeast and a tiny teaspoon of salt and sugar) - the difference is so noticeable from eating (salt heavy) store bought bread. I've cut out the fast food / lunchtime supermarket sandwiches / soft drinks / crisps (chips, you fuckers) / takeout (well, down to once a week... The difference is insane. I no longer crave salty / sweet things! A balanced diet with lots of fruit / veg where possible is perfect, but the key is to cut the salt, or excess sugar, and in your case perhaps get a lot more fibre - smoothies will help... Loads of bananas!!! Also cereal. ![]() |

For an ideal diet, you actually want what Paka mentioned. That is, eating more often, but with smaller portions. I can also confirm this. I got up to an uncomfortable weight of around 235lbs and said enough! Luckily, I am six feet tall so that always helps hide a few extra pounds. My wife drafted up a change in diet for me, and I have been doing this SAME EXACT plan for around 2 years now, and I am at a nice 205lbs. I am even skinnier than when I met my wife over 10 years ago. Every single day, this is what I bring to work. 1 red apple 1 cheese stick 1 granola bar (90-100 calorie version) 1 bottle of water (16.9 ounce) 1 can of generic slimfast (190 calories, get your nice vitamins here) 1 cup of bananna/strawberry yogurt (90-100 calories) 1 serving of lightly salted(blue diamond) nuts a couple of cans of diet coke. Obviously, removing the diet coke would be even better, but I gotta have it. I als drink a few cups of coffe. For breakfast, I usually eat a bowl of cereal, or even better a bowl of weight controlled oatmeal. Weight controlled oatmeal will help fill your stomach to keep you from snacking. I have the bottle of water and apple around 10am. Between 12noon and 2pm, I gradually eat everything else. Refill the water bottle as much as you would like and recycle it at days end. (dont reuse plastic bottles) I am eating my apple now as I type this. For dinner, just eat a normal portion meal, try not to overdo it or make it crappy fast food. I am luckily to have a wife that cooks. (I can cook too, be she loves to). And you may not want to hear this, but NEVER eat after 8pm. Drink all the water you want, but no food. Do this and the pounds will shed, and you will have some really healthy movements in the bathroom. On the weekends, with this diet, I can cheat a little if I want just fine. Of course, going to the gym also helps, but one step at a time. Edited by MrMikeNC, Dec 5 2012, 10:38 AM.

I'm at 258lbs. right now. I suppose the weight would be nice to lose but my main goal for this is the bathroom. It gets in the way, tends to make me late for everything and I have to ask everyone in the house if they have to go before I do because I'm in there so long. Oh and Gorilla, I haven't forgotten that you gave me advice too. ![]() I don't even drink soda much anyway. I tend to drink tea (though with sweetener in it) all day long except one trenta iced coffee at the beginning of the day. (Both from Starbucks) Not eating after 8pm is gonna be a hard one. I get the munchies most at night, especially right before I go to bed. |
