So yeah, I'm currently mining for new anime series to watch. To give you an idea of my tastes, my favourites so far: Tier 1: Beserk (the fucking best) Gungrave Ninja Scroll Romance of the three Kingdoms (would prefer less comedy, but yeah - classic story obviously) Tier 2: Ikki Tousen (it's pretty camp, but I like the source material) Avatar (kind of childlike but I tolerated it) Evangelion Street Fighter V (a bit of a travesty, but I'm a huge SF fan) So those mentioned above are basically the ones I have enjoyed so far. What I have no interest in: Naruto Pokemon One Piece So - hit me up with your suggestions! |

I really like Great Teacher Onizuka and Hajie No Ippo, but they don't seem to your taste really. Sorry for being useless, I don;t watch much anime :p |

Samurai Champloo Cowboy Bebop Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Rurouni Kenshin (OVAs and 1st half of the series) Hunter x Hunter (either one) Fullmetal Alchemist (either one) Mushishi ...yeah, I just realized I could probably list hundreds of series, but that won't help you. What exactly are you looking for? |

Hajime No Ippo is about boxing- Ippo is the kid who tries to become a boxer, etc. Pretty cliche rocky like story, but still entertaining with some more sombre moments. GTO is about a perverted 22 year old ex gang leader virgin who tries to become a great teacher. Comedy series, so not sure if it would suit you :s |

I've seen the Kenshin 4 part OVA + reflections, and the animated movie, but not the series. I might look into getting it. I saw the cowboy beebop movie, but didn't like it too much, so unless the series is vastly better, I might not bother with that one. I think I might get FMA: Brotherhood, but wait until next month for my quota to refresh - it's quite a sizable data 'investment'. I played the jojo CPS3 game, but didn't know it was an anime. I hadn't actually heard of the other three, could you tell me a little more? As for what am I looking for in particular? I suppose I could say I enjoy the westernised ones most, and to echo yesterdays conversation - typically speaking the older the target audience, the more they are to my taste. |

Jojo's has had a manga run in Japan since the 80's - the CPS3 game covers a minute part of the series and is one of my personal favorites, but it is a bit bizarre. Mushishi is... unique. Think X-Files in ancient Japan. I really don't know how else to describe it. Hunter x Hunter... probably not for everyone, but one of the deepest plots I have come across in anime. Every time you think you have the show figured out, it completely changes direction. They're currently running a reboot of the original series which speeds up the pace a bit, too. Samurai Champloo, though.... I think you'll like that one. From the same team that made Bebop (but MUCH better, IMO), this one's like a Kenshin for the Western world. And that soundtrack? HOT. Also, you're aware that they're in the process of rebooting Berserk, right? |

Also, since you liked Ninja Scroll I would highly suggest Basilisk. Shura no Toki (Age of the Shura) might be another one you'd dig... but I had a hell of a time finding all the episodes of that one. |

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Well it's about time! It was pretty frustrating that you only get a third of the story. Definitely one of the most awesome origin stories of all time, but that's all it amounts to - definitely keen to see the rest of the actual story. I haven't heard of Basilisk either, I'll take a look at it, and Samurai Champloon, which also sounds good. (currently downloading claymore) |

You have the exact same taste as my cousin, it seems. I can have him put together a list if you'd like ![]() I will add that it's a shame about you not liking Shonen-ish stuff... some of it breaks the stereotypes. One Piece is truly the greatest thing I have ever watched... anime, live action, cgi, whatever. THE BEST. But you have to get 50 or so episodes into it until it hits its stride... which is twice as long as some of the series you are looking at watching. ...but man, does it pull off "emotional" unlike anything else I have ever seen. |

When I was 6 years old, my favourite cartoon was Ulysses 13 ![]() I dunno how to explain it, I've just always typically liked the more mature audience stuff. I have no doubt that some Shonen is good, it's just not to my taste. |

I've only seen a few anime, but I'll go ahead and reinforce Gabe's recommendations of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. The Bebop series is vastly better than the movie, and Champloo is awesome. Maybe give Hellsing a shot, I kinda dug it. Also, it's only six episodes long, but Golden Boy is some of the funniest shit I've seen. It's about a guy who wanders Japan taking on odd seasonal jobs and getting crazy horny over the women he works with. |

Damnit, Headwounds! I was hoping I'd be the first to recommend Golden Boy. I can't recommend that one enough. It's only like 6 episodes or something, but damn is it hilarious. I recommend the following: Yu Yu Hakusho (my favorite of all time) Outlaw Star Cowboy BeBop Samurai X (NOT Ruruoni Kenshin) Samurai Champloo Saiyuki (VERY underrated) |

YYH is awesome, RPG, but he's not a fan of Shonen. Also, Samurai X and the Kenshin OVAs are the same thing - the name is different depending on the region. Saiyuki is on my "to watch" list... I may have to get on that soon! |

YYH is not to be missed! It is infinitely superior to every anime I've watched, characters have real development, and the story (ESPECIALLY Chapter Black) are simply amazing. If he doesn't even give it 12 episodes he is doing himself a disservice. |

I will never miss an opportunity to recommend Darker Than Black, Blassreiter and Black Lagoon. ![]() DtB is more about it's backstory than the story they tell so it's hard to really describe but basically the world has changed due to the appearance of what are known as "Heaven's Gate" and "Hell's Gate" and some people gained special abilities of various kinds. These people are known as contractors because they have to pay a price for using their power. The power and price differs from one person to the next, such as being able to null gravity but having to break a finger each time you use it, the price isn't necessarily conducive to the power. Contractors cannot refuse to do their contract, in fact no matter how brutal the price is they never even think of trying to disobey it. On top of that a contractor will always think of self-preservation before anything else, even if that means throwing a loved one into the fire. It's not something they choose, it's just how they are since the Gates appeared. The main character is an operative for an organization called The Syndicate and he does jobs for them dealing with contractors, either from getting info from them to disposing of them. The main character, Hei, is a contractor himself but for some reason doesn't pay a price for using his power. Meanwhile the chief of police is constantly on his case, trying to find out who he is and to capture him because in the eyes of the police force he's a threat. That should cover the basics of what DtB is. ![]() There is a second season to DtB I haven't seen but most people seem to say it's worse than the first season by a large margin but having not seen it myself I can't say anything about it. BL is action action action based on a smuggling company in the...Carribean, was it? At the beginning of the series the company takes a stereotypical Japanese salary man hostage but when he's thrown to the wolves by the company he worked for he decides to join this company and it's later brought to light that he has a secret sadistic side that he doesn't let show very often. This side actually gets the Lagoon Company out of a few tight spots throughout the series. This series is guns, mafia and smuggling and little more than that but it's awesome. ![]() Blassreiter is an action drama dealing with these beings known as Demoniacs that have recently appeared in the world and seem hellbent on destroying mankind. What's more is they are born of humans who come into contact with them, they go mad and then turn into one of them or if they die their dead bodies turn into them. Not to worry though! There's a special force known as the XAT that was formed specifically for fighting the Demoniacs. Because the Demoniacs can fuse with electronic equipment, including vehicles, the XAT are on motorcycles equipped to take down these creatures and to keep up with them. The twist is that there seems to be some Demoniacs that fight other Demoniacs and the XAT doesn't know what to think of that so they are investigating it. All three have pretty good English Dubs (I'm a dub watcher, sue me) |

Yuck, dubs. I'd rather be kicked in the balls 8 hours a day for the rest of my life than watch anime in English. ...as for DtB, from the way you describe it, I get a serious X/1999 vibe - another AMAZING show. |

Wait a minute.... Cuz I'm not going back to check everything... Has nobody mentioned X? And I've seen a few One Piece episodes. I didn't hate it, but I watched them in passing. Never really paid too much attention. Also, not sure if it's Shonen, but some of the Gundams are pretty damn great. I'm not talking about angst-filled crap like Wing. But Gundam 008th MS team is pretty good. |

Lulu = the most exotically delicious woman in FF. Anyway, I'm a very tolerant person when it comes to dubs so even dubs that are less than stellar (like Karin/Chibi Vampire) I still watch it. That being said, DtB has one of the best dubs and I would even go so far as to say, at least for the main character, that the dub is better. Hei's Japanese voice just doesn't fit him as well as the English one but I'm biased since I actually don't like hearing the Japanese language in anime. For some reason it gets on my nerves. Maybe if I learned Japanese it'd be better but as an English speaker with no knowledge of Japanese none of the tones they use make any sense to me and I would go so far as to say they are either too monotone or blow the excitement needed in a situation way out of proportion. |

X is amazing, both the series and the movie. As for the whole Japanese thing... I guess I'm in a different position since I can understand it... and comprehend it as well. Meaning, I actually get the culture-specific puns and jokes that typically make no sense to westerners. I still feel more comfortable watching subs, but can watch raws (unsubbed Japanese) without much pain. Even before I spoke Japanese, dubs always felt a little... off to me. Now that I'm basically fluent, dubs are pretty much unwatchable. It would be like trying to watch Looney Tunes in Japanese - it would make no sense at all... to me, at least. |

It's not so much the context of Japanese I don't get (I've watched enough anime and read enough manga that I get most puns and stuff, especially because editor's notes explained these things), it's just the way the voices play out. I understand the society is all about moderation and stuff like that and they are taught not to act out but the monotone voices annoy the living crap out of me and a lot of male characters tend to be that. Even that slight dip in their dialog just makes it sound stupid. I wanna learn Japanese just so I don't have to argue with people over something I'm likely just being ignorant over but I'll always watch anime in English. I'm tolerant enough that I don't have to care about watching things in Japanese. This was a Resullian opinion, ready to have my ass handed to me by Gabrius who thinks my opinions are batshit insane.

I try not to get into VA arguments though because of this though, I couldn't honestly give you any REAL reasons why I watch dubs over subs other than that I just prefer it that way. When I try to give reasons I flounder a bit because I honestly have no better reason other than "Because I do" lol Though I'll always say how good the dub is and specify that it's English since so many anime fans watch in subs I don't want them thinking I'm talking about the Japanese VAs. Anyway, anyone who hasn't seen DtB, go watch it, nao. |

I gave up arguing the point a long time ago - whatever you're most comfortable with watching, do it. Either way, at least you're watching anime! Regarding Seiyu (Japanese VAs) - I can recognize voices almost immediately and usually start rattling off other shows/characters the gur or gal has done... although I was shocked when I realized that Usopp (One Piece) and L (Death Note) were the same Seiyu... I was sure I was gonna be wrong on that one! Anyways, all that said - most people who bash dubs do not have logical reasons to hate anime in English and only do so because it makes them leet... or something like that. I will say though, Netflix having that incredible library of anime, but only dubbed.... that really pisses me off. |

I'm all for people making the choice and won't argue the point of which one you actually watch but I will still suggest it in English regardless. Only time I do not condone an English version is when they utterly change it from the original to the point it's not even the same anime. I hear One Piece did this but I dunno if Funimation redid the first bit that 4Kids ruined or just continued where they left off. I started getting into One Piece but then my library fines got too high and I couldn't read the manga anymore. xD I'm surprised someone (like me) hasn't started an anime discussion thread before this. I was almost afraid to cuz I thought no one would talk with me.
