Pretty damn stoked I must say. Bec got: An ASUS eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (don't remember how many e's on the box) Slate EP121. Basically an intel Core i5 with 2.4ghz and a 64GB Solid State Drive. This thing boots windows 7 to the desktop in about 5 seconds. That makes my PC cry hard. It can play Starcraft 2 at high res/high detail, and is windows 7 with full touch screen interface. Very snazzy. Comes with a blue tooth keyboard, too. I got: Well I was completely smitten with a red/black tone Sony Vaio, also a core i5 but a standard spindle HDD and took about 45 seconds....... that is much worse than my Core2 Duo PC with spindle HDD's and I couldn't justify getting one and being exceptionally happy after a few days. What i ended up settling on was a Samsung Galaxy S III, a goddamn quad core powered phone, to replace my current Galaxy S which is really falling behind the times And, I got an OCZ 120GB solid state drive for my PC. Gonna be a complete bitch reinstalling Linux Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Windows XP, but i'll be running all 3 OSes off near RAM access speed so the difference will be monumental. Sorry for all the jargon speak. Very happy. Very, very happy. |

Windows XP is not the original, but a hacked to pieces bare bones version that I used for arcade emulation. It's my ground work for what will eventually be transferred into a much lesser powered PC that i'm building for my arcade unit (when I finally get around to getting the parts for that) And Linux is sweet these days. Particularly Ubuntu which is up to build version 12.04. Safe as hell, no viruses or malware etc etc etc. I used to use windows 7 as my main platform, but the sheer annoyance of protecting it with firewalls and anti virus/anti malware, consumed far too many hours of my life, particularly when firewallleaktest.com showed me just how vulnerable I really was. I've used Ubuntu as my main ever since, and use windows 7 solely for gaming. |

Download a Ubuntu Live disc (which is basically the standard install disc), from Ubuntu.com. Basically, it lets you fully use Ubuntu so you can take it for test toast, without committing to it or altering your HDD in any way. It's user friendly as hell and is much safer and faster than windows. |

Thanks man. Really can't wait to get into my Galaxy, but i'm planning my movements for the SSD, because I've spent so much time getting my settings and files exactly how I want them. I REALLY don't want to start again, again, for 3 damn OSes. |

So the live disc runs from CD? And if I want to go permanent, then what? I'm running Windows 7, would I have to reformat? |

You can get repartitioning software to make some space for a ubuntu partition and dual boot both OSes. And to install it, there is always an icon 'install ubuntu' on the desktop of the Live version |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHH THE FRUSTRATION!!!!! Spent umpteen hours last night getting the solid state drive recognised in my PC, installed Ubuntu on it and was blown away by the performance. 270MB/s sustained read, 250MB/s sustained read/write vs 100MB/s from my 7200RPM HDD. Couldn't help but be concerned that the drive didn't work, and now it does, but hooey.......it's damn fast. I wake up this morning to continue my multi OS setup, and bam, the drive isn't being detected again. 2 hrs later I manage to get it working again, so I take the time to format it and remove all my data. Sure enough 2 restarts later, the drive isn't being recognised. Angry as hell, because I lost pretty much an entire day yesterday, and half my morning because I had to drive back to return it, and since they didn't have any more and I didn't want to risk it just yet, I leave with a refund to our credit card. Lost hours, and nothing to show for it. anyway, i get home and reset my SATA cables back to my original configuration, and lo and behold, windows 7 no longer boots.....at all. Didn't get a chance to do a system back up. So much lost data. Even worse, was when I got the SSD working, there was a windows install and a username on it, so it was clearly a defective return for most likely the same reason. I'm so fucking pissed that I put so much effort in, for no return other than a brief experience of just how fast the SSD is. Disappointing. |

That would so suck to get something to work just to have it break down again. I imagine I'll be running into a lot of crap like that with this programming thing when I actually start applying it to practice.

Ahhh that sucks. When doing something like that you plan for everything, and it's always something... just something else that comes up. And the time to fix it... yeah. Annoying. |

Most frustrating is that I got zero gaming done this weekend (wed/thurs is my weekend) and i'm going to bed in 4hrs and i'm actually worse of than when I begun. Computers absolutely SUCK!!! Which is why I never tried to get into the field. The frustration and WHAT!!!??!!! WHAT DO YOU NEED ME TO DO!!!!! moments just aren't worth it for me. |

Well, as much as i'm an idiot, I may have overreacted as apparantely solid state drives suffer from a slow wake up, which means the BIOS won't see it. Disabling 'quick boot', is supposed to fix it. So today, I bought a Kingston Hyper X (love that X) and i'm giving it another shot. This time i'm doing parallel OSes, so if it fucks up, I'm not screwed again. this is my new one: ![]() Throwing it in now, so i'll report back in a mo if it's detected. |

When I was assembling my machine I guess my BIOS didn't need any changes because my SSD was recognized right away and never had problems booting with it. What I did have a hell of a time was trying to do a RAID0 with a couple HDDs using Sata 3 connections on my motherboard. turns out I can't do a RAID configurarion using the SATA 3 connections. the onboard SATA is SATA 2, the SATA3 is a different controller and not as good as the onboard controller. Yeah... that only took about 20 or 25 hours to get straightened out. But in the end, it was good because that's what prompted me to get an SSD for a boot drive, and just use the RAID0 with Sata2 for data storage. Between the RAID0 drives, the SSD, and my gigabit network my data transfers between computers is almost like it's all one big computer. Edited by CapwnD, Jun 8 2012, 04:11 AM.

hmmm, just enabled AHCI in the BIOS (which was the result of the hacked BIOS), and now the SSD is doing 280MB/s 40 MB a second improvement is more than the entire throughput of the 60GB drive (btw, the 60 is the 5400RPM drive out of my launch PS3 ![]() |

I actually timed the Ubuntu boot with the stop watch on my phone, and it's 9 seconds. ![]() But hey, are you saying that you're a ubuntu user too? And i've been having an annoying night trying to get Win XP back on (won't have a bar of it due to the solid state in my machine) and windows 7 just keeps crapping out. Gonna leave it for now and get some shut eye. So tired. The drive is definitely crackin' along though, so i'm rapt about that. |

Naw, I never dealt with an OS besides Windows. I remember Windows 3.04, I think. I was 4 years old when the startup menu was DOS and I had to type "win" to get it to continue. |

I remember when I had a 286 with less than a megabyte HDD space so I had to run everything straight off the 5.25" floppies. Windows didn't even exist so at my c:\ prompt, I had to type 'dosshell', to get into a type of DOS based file manager. Windows 3.1 was an absolute mind blower when it dropped. |

Well, finally got Windows 7 back on there, and like ubuntu, it's fast as hell. Ubuntu boot time from GRUB menu (OS select menu) - 9 seconds to usable desktop Windows 7 boot time from GRUB menu - 10 seconds to usable desktop My only issue so far, is that I can't get windows XP to install because it only supports IDE drives out of the box, and it causes the install to simply crash n reset. I'm super duper happy with my Kingston Hyper X. highly recommend it to you chaps. |

God fucking damnit!!! Not even a week in and my Galaxy S III slips out my pants pocket, just as i'm getting out of the car and lands face down on the concrete of the carpark. The super duper unlucky side, is that the S3 is the first of the galaxies to not have raised edges around the screen, meaning that the impact was felt entirely by the screen. I should probably count my lucky stars that it's not shattered, but there's a horizontal crack, going through the centre of the screen, from one side of the face, through the screen and to the otherside of the face. Knowing that it is there is so damn distracting, disappointing and upsetting. ![]() |

Cap, that's some serious RAM you got going there. I've only got 6GB of DDR2. And yeah, HyperX is the name of my new drive. I must say that I do recognise Hyper X as Kingston RAM, too. Focian, i'll take your virtual hug of comfort. Fuck I need it. 899 AUD it costs, and a replacement screen is 300. I hate to do it, but i'm gonna try and hit up the retailer with a disatisfied purchase call, and mention the "used" HDD that was faulty and had to be returned as well. I hate to mislead them, but fuck, they're a multimillion dollar electronics retailer and 1 phone would be far under their shrinkage coverage. The only issue is dealing with employees that don't understand that the stock isn't theirs. See how I go tomorrow. |

I'm not too sure exactly how you're going to try and swing it, but I wish you the best of luck! Also, KillaK, have you made one of your "Purchases" topics? I wanna show off my new bow... But I do not want to steal another of your topics. XD Oh yeah, and I probably should have mentioned when I sent that Private Message on GameFaqs, I was browsing over a topic on the PS3 board where the private message system was being made out to be the most important communication device since smoke signals, thought it might give a little chuckle. |
