I was wondering if there is a way to hook up a external hard drive to a router so that I can be seen on a network. I would use this hard drive to back data up from multiple computers. Is there a way to do this?

If you have an external hard drive that has network capabilities you can. Otherwise just connect it to one computer then transfer all of the files from the other computers to the one hooked up the the hard drive.

If you have windows 7 its pretty simple to do. Just configure your Homegroup options and make sure allof the computers are on the same network.

What version of windows do you have?

I have windows 7. I've got my parents' computer hookup to the network using the homegroup thing.

But what I'm trying to do is to get the external hard drive to periodically back up their files.

Would I need to download a program to do this? I'm assuming I do.

Like Badour said, You could have that HDD attached to one computer, and have every computer access it, or you could have every computer backup files to it

Depending on how secure you want it (secure on your network end, not like internet secure) you can do this really easily or you could get more in depth with permissions for only certain users.

I know there's programs that do it, probably with more options, but I think windows can do it too.
