My dual monitor setup

Here's the wallpapers I'm using (Ultramon lets you use separate wallpapers, along with a ton of other helpful things for a duel monitor setup)

Here's one that shows some functionality... these are the same pages as seen on two 22inch displays, but with one set up as portrait view. Notice how there's no wasted space on the sides, and you can see the ENTIRE PAGE AT ONE TIME:

This was a really simple upgrade, and didn't cost much at all. Most nice graphic cards should have both VGA and DVI output, and anybody with a computer from the past 5 should have a card good enough to do this. It doesn't take any noticeable system resources (the graphics card does the work) and it has a bunch of ways of configuring. You can have the monitors on either side, specify which is the main monitor (in my case it LOOKS like the main monitor is my portrait view, but it's not). Windows itself has a bunch of functionality, plus your graphics card handles the other things. And for the final tweaks, Ultramon or some other freeware will tweak the stuff like hotkeys for swtiching applications easily from monitor to monitor, and to give you the ability to take a maximized window and just slide it over to the other one (where normally you couldn't move it if it's maximized).

It's sooo cool. One of the most fun upgrades ever, and it was such a cheap upgrade for me, minus the cost of the second monitor. Obviously other advantages would be things like working on one monitor while having other documents and web pages open in the other monitor. Great for coding.

The bad news:

Obviously the cost of a second monitor is the biggest drawback. But there's some other drawbacks to consider:

1. Finding a monitor you like which has a stand that will let you change your display to portrit view. Apparently there's some Dell monitors that do that, but I was looking for something else, and I found about about this part after I already bought a monitor.

2. Most monitors viewing angel are fine when your sitting down, but can fade out when you stand up or look at it from below. Well now that you have one monitor on the side, that becomes annoying because if you move to the left or right just a little bit, you lose your optimum view. That combined with the fact that I don't have a stand (mine is actually tied to my computer desk to stay in place) make it difficult for me to move beyond my normal sitting area.

3. More heat, and more electricity being used.

4. When you take a screenshot, it takes a shot of both monitors. You can cut out the other monitor with your photo program, but it's a small hassle, and it reduces the image size since it took the screenshot of the entire desktop (both monitors). There may be a way around this, but I don't know how to change that at this point, and that's kind of annoying because I sometimes take a lot of screen shots.

Even with those disadvantages... it's so much worth it!

Here's an example of sliding one app to the other monitor. Obviously I never would leave one in between both like that, but you certainly can if you'd like to. So if you had monitors with less border you could have it look more seamless.

Also, windows itself lets you tweak the height so that it's pretty close... for example, if my left monitor wasn't on a stand I would adjust it so that the other monitor knows the height that the window should be at.

Here's some Castlevania on the 360, while having a map up on the screen on the other monitor

Nice clock you got there....

I have done dual monitor before on my 19" HP and 32" Samy TV. It was useful to multitask.
