I did this little experiement, you can do this by bringing up a command prompt and typing ping -t router's IP address SCREEHSHOTS: The wired results using two 100 foot cables, one going to the router, one going to the switch. The PC was connected to the switch, which was then connected to the router: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/761/wired200feet.jpg WIFI from 1 room away, 5 full bars of connection: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7971/wifi1room.jpg WIFI from 2 rooms away, 4 full bars: http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1016/wifi2rooms.jpg RESULTS: The wired setup tested at less than 1ms of ping every time in that pic. After enough time, there was an occasional ping that was = to 1ms. On the Wireless, even only one room away (the results from the same room as the router were about the same) is equal to 1ms in most cases, a couple at 2ms, and one at 6ms. From two rooms away (4 bars out of 5) it's mostsly 3ms with some 4ms, 5ms and a 10ms. PICS OF THE SETUP: 2 x 100 feet of ethernet... Along with my brand new Dreamcast VGA box and my sexy PS3 http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7306/1000364h.jpg The router + switch for the 200 foot example wired http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4510/1000365s.jpg The wireless setup is connected to that WRT54GL in the pic, with DD WRT installed. It has a great signal and great range. |

yay? Wouldn't it be better to use a shorter Ethernet cable? Through my rigorous testing I have found that Wireless internet that I stole from someone was 5 times faster than my wired connection. But I recently moved, therfore I don't have the same WiFi guy to connect to. But on the positive side m DL speed somehow doubled to 2mb..... My ping in a cond o is 9ms.... |

yay? Wouldn't it be better to use a shorter Ethernet cable? No, and I used 200 feet to prove that you can be 200 feet (actually further, more like 100 meters or 328 feet) or you can be 2 feet away with wired and it will still be the same fast speed. I usually use 3 feet between the router and the PC. But I swapped with 200 feet just to prove the point. |

And I tried pinging some websites from both machines to show how the home network latency + internet further causes lag, and the results weren't as consistent, but in every test the wired connection was faster, usually twice as fast as when pinging with the wireless connection. I didn't post those results but yeah.. go ahead and try it. Open a command prompt and type ping -t google.com Or you may have to type it as ping -t http://www.google.com |
