Bloatfly A Bloatfly is a common mutated Wasteland pest resembling an over-sized blow-fly. A common encounter in the Wasteland, the comparatively diminutive Bloatfly is quite aggressive, often attacking animals much larger than itself with reckless abandon. Bloatflies do not attack at close range, but rather keep to a standoff distance and pepper their prey with spine bedecked larva launched from its abdomen. The supply of these larva is seemingly inexhaustible, and unless evaded or eliminated, Bloatflies will persecute an attacker with relentless single-mindedness. When attacking, Bloatflies emit a high-pitched cry. A wanderer more than a dozen feet away will likely not hear the fly's call before being attacked. Individually, they do not inflict much harm, but in swarms Bloatflies can be a serious nuisance to explorers and potentially deadly to weaker companions. Deathclaws Deathclaws are an enormously large, agile, and strong species of mutant creatures created through genetic engineering. They are substantially larger than a human, and have large and dangerous claws. Deathclaws are reptiles that stand roughly 10 feet tall, with an extremely resistant thick skin, powerful muscle and bone structure as well as razor-sharp claws, resulting in their moniker. Their build gives them incredible speed, resiliency and strength in close combat, making them an extreme threat at all times. They are aggressive, territorial, and carnivorous. Typically, they live in small packs, rarely alone (although it's not unheard of), with the alpha male being its leader, who is the only one allowed to mate with the female. Deathclaws are oviparous, with the eggs typically laid in dark, sheltered locations and fiercely guarded by their mother. Young deathclaws reach maturity under the care of their parents. Although they do not have vocal cords, the deathclaws seem to be able to mimic human speech much the same as a parrot does. However, normal deathclaws aren't intelligent enough to be capable of real speech. Ghouls Ghouls or Necrotic Post-Humans are decrepit, ragged, almost rotting, zombie-like mutants, victims of radiation poisoning. Limited exposure to radiation for a longer period of time sometimes causes humans with an unknown genetic characteristic to transform into ghouls, although rare cases of faster transformations into ghouls are also not unheard of. Exposure to radiation typically results in sickness followed by death for the average human being, however, the genetic x-factor that will lead to mutation into a ghoul upon exposure instead of the typical deadly outcome remains unknown. Ghouls are generally as intelligent as normal humans. However, their physical repulsiveness makes the life of a ghoul difficult at best - only the most tolerant human communities accept them as anything more than monsters. Some ghouls eventually go mad after the continuing decay caused by further radiation exposure has effectively destroyed their cerebral tissue and are called "feral ghouls"; these mindlessly aggressive--and hungry--zombies give all ghouls a bad reputation. These feral ghouls create the misconception amongst regular people that they are zombies like those depicted in old horror films, only alienating intelligent ghouls further from "smoothskin" humans. Ghouls are immune to most forms of radiation still remaining in the Wasteland. Radiation poisoning cannot really get worse for the ghouls, though it can hasten the process of decay and lead to their decline into the feral state as described above. However, many ghouls report feeling healthier when exposed to low-level radiation, and thus make their homes near locations with acute background radiation. The ghouls known as "Glowing Ones" actually enjoy large amounts of radiation, which they describe as being "comfortably warm". Radroach Great American Cockroaches, colloquially called Radroaches or simply giant cockroaches, are giant versions of the original cockroach species mutated by atomic radiation. Found mainly in underground areas and sewers across North America, these creatures can usually be found in fairly large groups. They feed on the dead, but will go after living creatures if isolated. Their numbers are usually their greatest advantage. Radroaches live mostly in the areas east of California. It is said that radroach guts are actually useful in the treatment of radiation poisoning, and are widely used by tribals for that purpose. Radscorpions Radscorpions are extremely large, mutated versions of the Emperor scorpion, which was prolific in pet stores at the time of the bombing. Contrary to some expectations, their Poison grew more potent when they mutated rather than becoming diluted. Though considered nocturnal and sensitive to light, radscorpions have nonetheless been spotted on the East Coast during the daytime. Samples of poison from their tails can be used to make Antidotes. Apart from their size, they look pretty much like normal scorpions, with shell color ranging from red to black. Super Mutants Super Mutants or Meta-Humans are mutated humans, products of infection by the Forced Evolutionary Virus, or F.E.V. They are much taller, bulkier and muscular than pure strain humans, have (mostly) green, gray, or yellowish skin, are immune to disease and radiation, and are gifted with superhuman strength and endurance. Although they are completely sterile, the rapid regeneration of their cells caused by FEV makes them biologically immortal (but not immune to death from injury, of course). Average Super Mutants stand approximately 10.5 feet (3.2 meters) tall (although they typically stand with hunched backs that reduce them to about 8 feet, or 2.4 meters) and weigh around 800 pounds (360 kg), possibly even more. While they will not die due to the normal effects of aging, Super Mutants are prone to senility, leading to tendencies to engage in near-psychotic, aggressive attacks against other humans and other creatures. As Super Mutants created by the modified strain of FEV as part of the Evolutionary Experimentation Program in the wasteland age, they grow consistently larger and stronger, eventually reaching heights of up to 2 stories. |
