He loved Dandelion.

It had nothing to do with the industry of the city, its populace, or its outward appearance. In fact, all were secondary to the driving factor of the dirtied metropolis. Most would consider its face unattractive at best, smattered with smog, street rats, and graffiti, but unlike other cities it didn't hide the filth that it was built upon. Such trivialities made no difference to him in the end, in any case. It was the simple fact that one could get away with almost anything in Dandelion. Law enforcement was scarce, and even more unlikely to be within reach of a crime while it happened. Of course, there was always the spare vigilante, but pick the right targets and they tended to turn a blind eye.

In the past, he had used the sector as a place to lie low, after all one, or two, more orphans didn't make a difference in public views or attract attention. People didn't care what one looked like, so long as one had money to steal or bet away, or, of course, some sort of illicit skill set, they'd be fine. Yes, the place had always served him well. On the flip side, however, it was likely it also served his enemies well. Not like they were really enemies, more like hunters, a term that made his lip curl involuntarily every time he thought it. Reality was cruel, though, and Leonidas had no choice but to accept the facts for what they were.

The blonde walked down the street of Skid Row, wearing a tattered gray cloak, its hood up although not obscuring his face from a close distance. More than anything, he wore the cloth to fit into a certain role found all throughout the metropolis. Calamitas concealed under the fabric, few even gave him a second glance, much less actually watched him with true intent. A perfect disguise for some intelligence gathering, he thought.

She couldn't say she loved Dandelion...

... but somehow, she didn't hate it, either. And for someone such as herself, perhaps it was strange, but then again, perhaps it was justified. Dandelion was a city steeped in crime, and no respectable person really ever wanted to be found there. Sometimes, though, in order to hide oneself, you had to position yourself in a place where you would be least looked for. And thus, it was not expected that a guild which prided itself in protecting Earthland from dangers would make its abode here.

But the Nine Lives hid here, and here was home.

Caelie didn't like all the aspects of Dandelion, but surely there was a reason the guild master had chosen this place as their base of operations. In spite of her feelings, the city did offer her a chance to study human behavior, especially in the absence of moral restraint. It made her realize that even though humans were mostly the ones who needed protection, sometimes Earthland needed to be protected from some humans.

This place made her consider the topic of morality. That kind of made her wonder every now and then if she was willing to cross certain lines for the sake of Earthland. Did the end justify the means? Or was that a step into the dark side? The stark reality of this city always got her thinking, and that helped her reevaluate herself every now and then.

Her eyes watched a few black birds not so far away, standing on a rooftop and cawing to each other. These corvids always seemed to be here and there in the city, and come to think of it, they could make a very good spy network for the guild, even though the guild was designed around the feline stalkers of the city. Such a high vantage position she was in gave one a good view of the people down below, and many a time, they were oblivious to those overhead.

From watching the birds, she looked down at the street below, and saw a shock of blond hair. That looked like someone she knew, and had worked with a couple of times. Leonidas. She wasn't too surprised to see him here; he wasn't the kind to shirk from a place like this, but nobody, not even the fearless walked into Dandelion for no reason. Not that it was overly dangerous, but it was the kind of place where not being there for a good purpose was guaranteed to cost you something, time being the cheapest thing to lose.

She watched Leonidas for a bit, deciding that she would come down to chat after observing him for a while.

Listen well enough, and one can find all the information they need without saying a word.

Or, at least, that was supposed to be correct in theory. In practice, well finding the right people to eavesdrop upon was more than half the battle. Such was especially true in Dandelion, where the great majority of its inhabitants were criminals that probably held more than a few secrets. Some stooped too low, however, and others walked a little too hastily. Most common, however, was the darting of eyes and heads, constantly seeking danger. Fools, all of them, for such actions were easily recognized by law enforcement, although not as if anyone policed the area. Pickpockets, perhaps they were, or maybe common thugs. Neither mattered in the long run, and so Leonidas ignored them, beyond being conscious of where they were in case one tried to pull something foolish.

It was those who appeared to be normal that he paid attention to, the man walking casually down the street, the woman chatting with a street performer as if they were well-acquainted. Most likely, both were locals, to not appear to be on guard at all times, but they weren't obviously running from something. The rate of normal civilians was low in the sector, to add to that, and peaking out from the woman's boot was the hilt of a knife. A self-defense mechanism, perhaps, but in that case it would probably be best to keep the weapon out in plain sight as intimidation. No, there was something else going on, something interesting.

After a brief conversation, the woman headed toward a building, one the blonde had seen the man enter a few minutes earlier. A bar, it seemed, and a rather generic, worn down one at that, compared to some of the more flashy establishments along Skid Row. After waiting a moment or two, pretending to be entertained by the street performer's crude reenactment of maypole dancing involved torn and faded pieces of fabric along with a streetlight, plus a few unwilling volunteers from the passing bystanders, Leonidas threw a coin in his direction, before heading toward the business he had noted earlier.

As she watched him lazily, her attention drawn away from the black ravens close by, she noticed that he too, seemed to be watching something, or someone. Not too far off, a group of shady individuals watched Leonidas, and whispered among themselves. It didn't take a sage to realize that they were sizing him up, whether he would be a lucrative venture or not, and how much of a danger he would pose were he to fight back. She couldn't hear what they said, but eventually, one of them pointed at him and gestured somewhat, and even from her distance, their body language informed her that they had been dissuaded. She smirked. Perhaps they had carried out threat assessment, and his was just a mark too high. Or, maybe they felt he didn't have enough to be worth their while.

Her eyes went back to the source of Leonidas' interest. It was a woman, who seemed sort of out of place, but only because she didn't look like the average shifty criminal that populated Dandelion. Of note, though, was the fact that she was armed. She mused whether the woman was capable of using the dagger. It was very likely, since the woman seemed so relaxed in a place like this. either that, or she had some other line of defense she was very proud of.

Leonidas followed the woman with his gaze, and Caelie followed him with her eyes. The woman seemed to be headed for a building, one which looked quite run-down, compared to the others. That meant that the owner was either hiding something, or he just wasn't big for renovations. Perhaps she could come on down and see what Leo was up to. It wasn't as if she had anything important to do, anyway. So, it was settled. She would follow him into the house, and make her presence known, unless he perceived her before she came close.

She climbed the balustrade of the balcony on which she had stood, and jumped off to a lower roof. It was actually a more fun way of getting to the ground, and it was faster, too, but you had to know what you were doing, or you could crash right through a roof, or miss your footing, or some other calamity, and end up with broken bones, or worse. That was not applicable to her, though, having done this over and over again. She slid down the decline of the roof, which was made slick by a previous rain, jumped off at the edge to catch another balustrade, before dropping safely to the floor of an alley below.

Splash! She landed right in a puddle of water. Fortunately, it was not deep, and her black leather boots protected her from the muddy water that splashed up her calves. A bearded, foul-toothed, inebriated man suddenly burst into laughter not so far off, pointing at her. Obviously, he found something funny about her landing. Fearing that there might be something else he was laughing at, she checked herself and her surroundings, but she could discern no other cause for his cackle. So, she gave him a correcting glare, which was lost on him, before ignoring him and stepping out of the alley into the street.

She was not very far from Leonidas now, whom she casually followed.

The businesses in Dandelion were typically run down, rarely checked, and even less likely to be monitored by anyone upholding the law. Granted, there were a few exceptions, mainly the big, flashy establishments meant to make a pretty penny out of swindling in all its forms, whether it be gambling, overpriced drinks, or ridiculous shows meant to be a distraction for easy thieving. Those were useless, in his opinion, the crowds far too large and stakes far too high to fulfill the two purposes of a bar, to meet people and get drunk. Alright, there was a little more to them than that, but those were the most important reasons.

Another reason to visit the sector more often, Leonidas supposed. Although he could get away with a lot from time to time, it was always nicer to not have to put in the effort in the first place. Lazy? Yes, but he didn't like the headache of procedure and such; it was hard to believe that anyone did. Of course, someone did, because the government of Fiore reigned, but it made him gag, especially when spun in the wrong direction by a fool's plea.

Enough inward rumination, though. Leonidas had the vague feeling that someone was tailing him, but dismissed it for the moment, figuring that in the event that someone was following him they'd end up in full view upon entering the worn, black door he pushed open. The stench of hard alcohol awaited, accompanied by dingy, flickering lighting and blacked out windows. A stereo played, somewhere in the background, tuned to static and a light bass. The characters themselves? A hodge-podge of drunkards, seedy fellows, minors, shriveled-up retirees, and there, in one corner, the man and woman, speaking in hushed tones. The blonde walked up to the bartop, smiling as he headed toward a stool well within the view of the pair, although not obviously so.

He sat up on the seat, pretending to be bored as he waited for the bartender to come around, watching the man and woman out of the corner of his eye. Why was he doing this, chasing a thread into nowhere? Well, it was kind of fun, he had to admit. They didn't seem to be on a date, and it seemed as though they knew each other, given their closeness but reservation when it came to intimacy. "So, whatcha gettin' today? Ya can put da hood down, too," the employee finally came around, a man with a crooked, partially toothless smile. Just what Leonidas had expected, although he cursed under his breath about being careless when it came to his streetwear, and pulled the fabric down from his head.

"You got any fancy stuff?" he asked, well aware of what the answer would be, for an awfully vague question. Apparently, the keep took it as wine. That was fine, actually, and Leonidas nodded, although the man protested that he only had one bottle left. A red, it appeared to be, as the bartender poured the drink into a glass. The blonde threw some jewel on the counter right away, knowing the advantages of it in the shady city, before taking a sip. Alright, he remarked internally, saying nothing.

From outside, it looked like a bar. Not the kind of bar that attracted people after a hard day's work, or drew the rich and elite who were out to spend some jewel, or even the average worker who wanted a shot before he headed home. It looked more like the kind of bar that encouraged getting drunk at seven o'clock in the morning. It even had windows that had been painted over with some dark substance, the seedy version of tinted or polarized glass. And that was where Leonidas was headed.

Even though Caelie did not want him to see her yet (not for any reason in particular), she made no attempts to move stealthily or conceal her movements. Instead, her pace was leisurely, and she assumed that by the time she got to the door, Leonidas would see her, unless his back was to it. As he opened the door, she tried to peer inside, but the interior was much too dark, and the lighting too dim for her to make out any distinct forms.

Her hand eventually reached out and pushed the door open in a mildly gingerly fashion. There wasn't much to see inside, and its patrons aside, the outside of the building might have been more worthy to look at. Well, this place was not built for aesthetics, that was obvious enough. Her eyes glanced around, though she wasn't looking for anyone in particular. The only person she knew, after all, was getting himself a drink at the bar itself.

"I thought there was a law against minors drinking or something," Caelie said jovially, as she drew up beside the blond young man. "Ah, what do I know? Dandelion is a law unto itself, yes?"

The bar tender made a sound in his throat which sounded something between a cough and a snicker. "Too many questions's bad for business, missy. What do I get you?" Caelie laughed lightly and shrugged. "Water... or anything non-alcoholic," she replied. The bar tender looked mildly irritated. "There's fruit juice vendors and milk stands if you into that sorta shite."

Caelie only looked more amused. "Come now, good sir; water is such a common commodity in these parts." He muttered something unintelligible and seemed to ignore her. She thus turned her attention to Leonidas. So, what would Leo be doing in a place like this?

Ah, so Caelie has been the one following him. It was a bit of a surprise, for Leonidas had assumed she wouldn't be the sort of person to involve herself in more criminal activities. Of course, being in Dandelion didn't necessarily mean one had an affinity for illicit actions, but the fact that she had been tailing him probably meant she was somewhat familiar with the area, not just passing through. Then again, the city had come up in one of their conversations before, and the girl hadn't seemed adverse or repulsed by it. Perhaps she was one of the sector's vigilantes, although they were few and far between at the best.

His eyes traveled in the direction that she walked, clearly toward him. It wasn't a surprise, considering that it didn't look like he was doing anything aside from sipping on the glass in front of him and observing the other patrons of the bar. He supposed that was true, there wasn't much happening in any case, although several people looked up as Caelie mentioned minors and the like. They apparently didn't understand that not being alarmed by such a statement would be a much better way to avoid law enforcement, not as though there was such an individual present in the establishment, though.

Still, he had waved as she walked in, perfectly open to some conversation at the present time. The barkeep's reaction to Caelie's request was amusing, and he smiled as well at the girl's naivity. Rules were meant to be broken, after all, or at least they had been broken before they were put into place. "Nothing illegal, that's for sure," he remarked in a joking matter, although technically the words held truth to them. He picked up the glass in front of him and drank from it, the taste already starting to wear on him. Wine just really wasn't worth the cost in any way, it wasn't even good at getting one drunk. Ah well, he probably wouldn't stay here long in any case.

"I assume you mean Dandelion in general, though? It's a nice place, well obviously not literally, but the sector's a far pace away from the ordinary law and order of the world. You can find practically any sort of person here, although I have to admit, Caelie, you were not someone I was expecting to see. So you're not just drawn to libraries and laboratories, then?"

The fact that Caelie did not pay any attention to the youngsters who (legally, of course) were not expected to be in a place such as this implied that she was simply jesting, and had not taken their actions seriously. She did find it funny, on her part, that people who, for all intents and purposes, were trying to look cool or tough by getting drunk, still showed how much they lacked that particular adjective they sought to express.

Caelie slowly swiveled on her stool, till her back was to the bar and she could lean against it. She was more interested in finding a support for her upper body, than in monitoring the activities of other patrons of the bar. Leaning an elbow on the wooden bar, she considered his counter question for a bit. True, she was one of the last people to be expected to be found in a place like this, let alone live here, what with her moralistic tendencies and the seeming lack of such in this place. Her rumination on the question made her wonder whether Dandelion was not as bad a place as people thought, or she was starting to get swayed in her convictions.

"Libraries and laboratories are a lot of fun, true, but they don't give the full picture. They make it easier to understand the inner workings of the universe, but when you get outside the system of theory, well, you find it's a completely different ball game, yes? I think I like to live a balanced life. Besides..." She suddenly arched an eyebrow, then turned and stopped a large glass that had been slid towards her by the bar tender. She looked at the colorless contents of the container, then took a little sip. For a while, she seemed to play with the fluid in her mouth, like she was probing it for some certain characteristic, then, at length, she smiled satisfactorily and swallowed.

"Gee, thanks, barkeep. I was sure you had something akin to my tastes. For a while there, I almost thought it was vodka." The man grunted. "Or, I had spiked it with something? Gimme some credit, kiddo; I still got integrity you know?" Caelie nodded and gave him an apologetic grin. "Sure, but you know what they say in Dandelion: 'Trust 'em as far as you can throw 'em.'"

Holding the glass in one hand, she returned to Leonidas. "Sorry for the mild interruption. I was saying something... Ah yes, I believe that besides all the 'learning lessons about life' advantages of this place, it's actually good for business."

Life experience seemed to be a valid excuse for visiting Dandelion, although he internally questioned what Caelie wanted to find in the rough and tough neighborhood. For anyone touring about, one glance pretty much summed up the entire city. A filthy corridor for illicit activities, all that changed was what type. From the quick pickpockets on Orphan's Row to the scheming crime lords inhabiting Eastcrest Estates, it would honestly be more surprising to find a legitimate operation. Even the knights relied on information that was probably biased at best, whatever influence they did have. More often than not, however, the crime fighting was left to groups of vigilantes and gangs' protection.

It worked, though, the strong survived and the weak either fixed themselves or perished. If one didn't possess enough intelligence, brawn, or cunning, they would undoubtedly be left behind in the mud. It was the same everywhere, in the end, and what was the point of covering such up under a veil of sunshine and rainbows? Public security? The war certainly threw that out the window. Fiore just tended to be one giant contradiction; acknowledged dark guilds that went about unpunished, a legal city literally built by condemned criminals, the list went on and on.

Better to leave those arguments in his head, though, lest he wanted to be tagged as a madman. Not like that wasn't already a label, but it wasn't good, confirming others' assumptions. Besides, Caelie wasn't even talking about government, nothing even close to such, as a matter of fact. Leonidas waited patiently as the white haired girl chatted with the barkeep, sipping from the glass he held with mild amusement. She was seriously concerned about the man having spiked the water, apparently, a somewhat funny notion if one took a pace back and looked at where they were.

"Business, here? If you go around saying that, one might start questioning what you really mean. Dandelion's reputation for employment opportunities don't exactly fall in the clean sector, after all. That tends to be half the reason why most venture out here in the first place," the blonde answered as Caelie finished speaking to him. "Not that I really care, though, it's all the same in the end. 'Business' is why I paid the sector a visit, so I can't really judge."

Leonidas' surprised response to Caelie's claim of being here on business was not surprising, in the least. Most people looked at her as a forthright person (she actually was, too; though, in any event that she decided to go crooked, many would not, for a long time, suspect her of duplicity), and would not expect any of her ilk to run legit 'business' in this criminal haven. Leonidas was quite correct; it was almost impossible to find anyone honorably and gainfully employed in Dandelion. Perhaps there were a few, but they went mostly unnoticed, and liked it that way.

He mentioned that business of his own brought him here, and Caelie felt that could be a good avenue for small talk. "Mmm, so Leonidas is conducting business that doesn't 'fall in the clean sector'? That sounds intriguing."

Her eyes drifted idly close to the couple, who were still discussing and seemed oblivious to them, and drifted away. Monitoring a quarry without looking like it was one skill in hunting that was very necessary. It let one hide in plain sight, so to speak. While those two were not her targets (perhaps yet), since Leonidas seemed to have been interested in them, she could help to keep an eye on them, for lack of anything doing.

Still pulling at Leonidas' legs (proverbially, of course), she continued"You did mention, when I came in, that you were not doing anything 'illegal', then you astutely note that Dandelion doesn't normally run clean business, and now you reveal that you have 'business' here to attend to." She chuckled, then took another sip. "Come to think of it, why do you think I would be even looking for clean business here?"

She was careful not to ask him what he was up to, even though she was mildly curious, just so that he would not think of her as nosy. And even if he didn't want to tell her what he was doing in Dandelion, there were still lots of other things to chat about. Socializing was such a complicated... business.
