He laughed at Beryl's interpretation of Empyrea's teachers, accurate to a tee in his opinion. Leonidas had nothing against learning institutes, but bureaucracy usually transformed them into a convoluted mess, tutors often spouting out their musings as fact and misinforming students. Books and libraries were far less opinionated, and they were easier to fact check in case of an author led astray. Aside, it was far harder to manipulate one over text than it was over speech, the lack of tone only left questionable statements to be seen through like a cleaned, clear window. Nothing could really change human impact, however. The blonde woman did bring up an interesting query, but Leonidas shook his head, still, to a degree, smiling. "Not a scholarly degree, so to speak. I mean Empyrea no offense, but what is found there is information already found, researched, and tested. While their graduates may pioneer new things based on the knowledge they obtained, there is no need to seek a degree if one already knows what they must," he stated, far more factual than his actual words seemed, after all if broken down and spun in a different way they probably would have conveyed great arrogance. Did he care? No, not really. They did agree on one thing after all, the stuffiness of professors and, likewise, the self-proclaimed geniuses that studied at the school to great lengths. They were... not pleasant to speak with, as he had found out on numerous occasions. "The finding and researching doesn't occur within the walls of a classroom, usually, it is the greater world that serves as a background for such. That's why I'm here, actually, looking for a solution to a... predicament, to answer your question. It does involve magic, so perhaps we can find some common ground there," Leonidas expounded, still within the realms of ambiguity although less so. He had made clear, or at least in his frame of mind, that he was interested in hearing about just what Beryl was working on, as she had called it, without really asking a question. Whether or not she would pick up on such remained to be seen. |

If anything, Leonidas shared Beryl's views on the subject of doing research. Empyrea was full of knowledge, but that knowledge was already documented. There was so so so much more to learn in the outside world, things that could never be gained from sitting behind a telescope all day and arguing theorems with one's fellows. Unfortunately, it seemed that a great number of the population of Empyrea had become opined that such a life was the life of an academic. "Please, feel free to mean Empyrea all the offense you desire; it concerns me little," the Seveni replied in an aloof tone, as she dismissively waved her hand. The fact that she was researching in Empyrea, as well as hoping to get a degree from there did very little to cement her loyalty to the institute of higher learning. It was, in her opinion, difficult to feel connected to an institution which acted as though it was doing one a favor by offering studies. Maybe it was, but hello, there was such a thing as tuition fees! And it wasn't like the academy would survive without patronage from the 'common folk', who seemed to be held in little esteem by the pedants in their ivory towers. "In any event," the green-eyed damsel continued, "the need for a degree is mostly unnecessary, unless you're someone like me, who is unfortunately almost addicted to the acquisition of knowledge, for the sake of it, not for the glory of having a meaningless title to make your names longer. Knowledge which, as you so rightly believe, must be found and perhaps, if the inclination is there to do so, documented. I never liked long names, anyway...." Leonidas had mentioned something about a predicament, which had piqued Beryl's curiosity. The inclusion of the fact that it involved magic had Beryl sold. True, her research was based on magic that revolved around phenomena alien to Earthland, but still, if Beryl could help, while learning more about magic in general, she would. Who knew whether this predicament could yield some information which would be of relevance to her research work? "Common ground it is," the Seveni stated cheerily. "What's the matter? I'll be glad to help, if I can." |

He nodded as Beryl explained her distaste for universities and that her attendance of one essentially boiled down to necessity, something that Leonidas easily sympathized with. It was the same with appearance, the same with polite conversation, the same with practically anything normal; they were all necessary evils. "Ah yes, random letters attached to someone's name that are supposed to show off how intelligent they are. I never really understood it myself, especially considering my personal experiences with some of the people bestowed with such honors making quite silly mistakes. Better to determine a person's usefulness yourself, in my opinion," Leonidas replied in an almost scoffing tone. Inevitable as it was for her to ask him what he referred to, the blonde didn't respond immediately, instead formulating one in his head. It would be better to answer on a small scale, why Belladonna?, instead of the bigger picture. Sometimes, nay, almost always in wasn't necessary to know all the background information, after all one didn't have to know someone's entire life history to judge them, it was just a matter of accuracy. And so he shrugged, looking in Beryl's direction before turning back out toward the crowd, as if he was discussing nothing of importance, and indeed there would be too much rabble for anyone to feasibly eavesdrop. "I'm looking for someone. She happens to be a local expert on the supernatural, but let's just say she's not fond of collaborative research and likes to associate with the underworld of Belladonna. Has some nasty things planned for some innocent demographics, as well. It's not why I'm interested, she has some data that I need pertaining her research, but helping the world's not a bad consequence," Leonidas answered. "I assume you're interested in these sorts of things, considering your visit to Halloween Town?" Surprisingly, considering it was him speaking, he had told the complete truth, or at least as far as he knew. Of course he cared about morality far less than he had let on, which still hadn't been much, but it wasn't as if he was planning on committing genocide anytime soon. Oh, that was what he had forgotten to mention, the woman's other intent. Ah, Belladonna probably didn't have much to do with it, though, so what did it matter? Hopefully they could come to a mutually beneficial arrangement, or else the blonde would have to go snooping around alone, which would take more time. Time, something that felt like a finite resource these days. |

Beryl amused herself by trying to imagine how the professors and other pedants at the higher institutions of learning all over the world would go red in the face and demonstrate a host of other amusing antics, were they to hear Leonidas' words. Seeing as the people in question devoted their lives to "study", as many of them so professed, it was, in Beryl's opinion, quite hypocritical of many of these ones to actually be in their vocation for the titles, and not for the simple sake of acquiring knowledge. But all sorts of things made all sorts of people tick. The Seveni was sure that there were people who would consider her drive to make herself more knowledgeable, simply because she believed it was rewarding in itself, a waste of time and effort. Their problem. To more pressing matters at hand, Leonidas seemed to be interested in finding someone. From his descriptions, she didn't seem too nice an individual, but hey, no one was to judge a book by its cover, right? In any case, one could judge a book by its preface, and if Leonidas was being objective in his descriptions, this person of interest had one too many pages short of 'well-meaning citizen'. From the way the teen spoke, he appeared to give off an air of casual indifference, even though the contents of his words sounded weighty enough. A tactic for deflection of attention, perhaps? Without giving anything away, the Seveni wondered if there might be people in the crowd watching the two talking blondies. It was possible, especially if Leonidas' quarry knew he was looking for her. In any case, the 'nasty things planned for innocent demographics' sold Beryl. After all, if she could, she had to stop whatever nefarious activities she could. It only served to stoke the fire when one remembered that this person Leonidas sought for was an expert in supernatural matters. And supernatural plus innocent sacrifices often meant demons. "Do you have any leads on this person?" Beryl asked, though her tone of voice and body language would make a distant observer think she probably mentioned how people tended to dress in eye-torturing colors simply because they wanted to celebrate the fact that the weather was no longer freezing water, and the sun could resume its benign baking of the creatures on the terrestrial sphere below. Leonidas' interest in the woman's research was curiosity-invoking, but maybe it was a question for another time. |
