Caelie continued the harmless and powerless chant as she watched her blonde friend scale the wall like a professional. A slight smile tilted her lips upwards towards the right. That sort of skill set would prove very useful in a guild such as their own, which was little wonder Beryl had joined up with them. Beryl would make for a good huntress, what with the way she could navigate both silently and swiftly. It was not really about hunters though, this little activity of the day. Caelie was very curious to know the exact nature of these ghosts and what utilities they had at their disposal. In a moment, Beryl was back, having come back the same way she left, with, as usual, hardly anything to pass off for a sound. If Caelie had not been chanting very loudly, Beryl would probably still have moved undetected. She listened to the information, then turned a little sharply to look at her friend with mild incredulity. "An alpaca," she repeated, more of a statement than a question, though she was clearly surprised. "While I'd have spent time wondering how it got here, the plant sculptures indicate that it is probably Mardo's pet. If it is Mardo's, then the ghosts might be people he knows, or the alpaca is under the influence of a drug or something to keep it docile." Alpacas were not really harmful, but they were jittery, ticklish things. In the presence of strangers, it ought to have raised a clamor, but it seemed to just patiently stand there. At least, she wasn't hearing any sounds from it. "Be that as it may, I think we can start spooking our friends. Though, do tell: did you notice anything about the two humans? Sexes? Ages? Anything?" |

Beryl shrugged as her companion gave a hypothesis about the alpaca. "Well, the wee animal didn't looked dazed or drugged to me. And the beast appeared more concerned with gnats than it was with being in the presence of unfamiliar folk. It seemed to be in quite full control of its faculties, although there might be magic at work there." She shook her head incredulously. "What I don't get is this: if that alpaca belongs to Mardo, why isn't this mission more about retrieving an alpaca than it is about exorcising ghosts?" The request for more information about the human companions of the exotic animal was sensible. "It's gonna be hard to give a clear figure about their ages, seeing their faces were masked. They were dressed in some stupid-looking ghost get-ups, although I must admit that their silhouettes could be a bit convincing with the right lighting. However, I may be wrong, but from observation and study, a good deal of ectoplasmic sources don't leave shadows since they cast a faint light, or if they left shadows, such would be wispy at best. But I assume Mardo couldn't possibly know that." The Seveni looked towards where the ghost group was hiding, as she began drawing details out of the little she had seen when she carried out her little espionage exercise: "I'd say they're young, but physically mature, so maybe our age-mates or thereabouts; they move with the zest of youth... or they're some rather fit old-timers. One is most likely female, determinable by mannerisms and posture. She seems to be the mastermind, as I noticed that the other ghost wannabe was following her instructions. Bigger, chunkier-- most likely a male. Their movements denote they are physically active, although I won't say they're acquainted much with regular exercise." That was about the size of it. It seemed some new ingredient had been introduced to the fire, because the glow coming from behind the wall had now taken on a purplish hue. "Shall the spooking commence?" |

Okay, two youths, most likely. Old people were not usually given to playing such hoax games, though there were always exceptions. Until proven otherwise, Caelie would go with the option that they were young adults, or perhaps in their late teens, as opposed to elder citizens. Also, Beryl lent a little more credence to the veracity of her premise that these people might just be known by Mardo, seeing that the alpaca was very comfortable in their presence. The information gathered was enough to set their own "ghost mission" in motion. Giving a slow, wicked smile, Caelie nodded. "There is a possibility that, owing from the direction of our voices, they may currently be trying to, or are spying on us. I'll make my presence known to them, and then, the fun shall begin." She turned her back to where the ghost wannabes were situated, so that they would be unable to see the two identical daggers (but for color) she summoned into her hands, and that she gave the obsidian bladed one to Beryl, and kept the other in her belt. "Take Yana," she said, "and hide somewhere I can see the dagger. I'll be joining you shortly, after my first act." After ensuring that Beryl was cool with the plan and had taken a suitable position, she turned and began walking towards where the ghosts were, raising her voice as she continued the Seveni rhyme. As she walked into full view of the "ghosts" and their alpaca, she stopped short, an unexpected look of confusion on her face, which fluidly evolved into a mixture of shock and horror. Then she turned slowly, seemingly oblivious to the presence of the two "ghosts", to some unknown stimulus behind her. The white-haired girl's face contorted with terror, and as she opened her mouth to scream, the cry was cut short as her body suddenly evaporated into black specks of energy, which disappeared a moment later, leaving only her jacket behind. Unseen to the ghost wannabes, Caelie appeared right beside Beryl, almost beside herself with laughter. The turning back that she had done gave her the chance to look at Yana, to enable her teleport back to its location. "Wonder what they'd be thinking now. You're up next, Beryl. You got something you want to do?" |

Taking the offered dagger from Caelie, Beryl moved over to a place well hidden by some large broken concrete slabs, in full view of wherever Caelie would stand to engage the ghost impersonators. With the size of the debris, she could easily conceal herself, but Caelie had mentioned that the dagger had to be visible, so the Seveni hid herself properly, although she held out her hand which held the dagger, so that the weapon would be visible to Caelie, when the white-haired lass decided to do whatever it was she intended to do. It so happened that the dagger, along with its twin, had some space-time manipulating properties, perhaps similar to her own shortswords Surya and Chandra. Caelie had done some theatrics, and then had vanished into thin air, to reappear beside Beryl, hidden from the sight of the ghost impostors, and tickled pink. The Seveni waited for her friend to finish laughing, a grin on her own face. "You evil thing," she said with a chuckle, "I'd really like to see their faces now." From their hiding place, the two girls could hear the alpaca making sounds of protest, while the voices of the ghost wannabes could also be heard, and even though they were low enough to be inaudible, the concern was evident in their voice tones. At a point, one of them could be heard trying to hush the camelid, which had become rather spooked by the whole event. Beryl turned to look at her co-conspirator, a naughty grin lighting up her features as she opened her hand and pointed it towards the ground, palm down. "You did ask if there was something I wanted to do?" she said, as she placed her hand on the ground. "Well, let's make our ghost more authentic." Utilizing her Adamantine Cataclysm, albeit a much more toned down variation, the Seveni coursed Earth magic into the ground, causing a slight but rather detectable vibration in the earth, enough to cause rattling and a bit of noise. There was silence for a bit, then the noise from the ghost impersonators became more frantic. |

Her little circus trick had had the intended effect, and Caelie could hear them speaking in disturbed tones, even though they still had the sense to keep their voices down. The alpaca, being an animal, did not have that much... sense, and she could hear one of the ghost wannabes trying to calm it down. A frightened animal tended to throw caution to the winds, and the spook conspirators wouldn't want their fluffy friend to ruin their plans in its panic. Beryl was conceiving ideas of her own, and she decided to use her magic to create a rumbling effect that came from the ground. The result was actually perfect; if Caelie had wanted to imitate the presence of a house-bound specter, she would have gone for that kind of spell. The earth rumbling had a more profound effect on the dilapidated walls all around, making them shake and rattle, the loose tiles making a louder, more unsettling noise than was necessary. It was more than enough to cause a louder distressed complaint from their ghost friends. "Hehehe. Look who says I'm evil. Looks like we're obtaining the desired effect. A little extra prodding, and they should go running for the exit. I would very much like for Mardo to identify his hoaxers. It would be much easier to explain to a 'Jirugomantic' fellow such as himself." She allowed herself a giggle, then drew Yuraq from its place. "Okay. Let's see how they handle this." So saying, she threw Yuraq at a far wall, which would be visible to the ghost wannabes. Of course, they might not see the airborne dagger, but they would see its effect. Yuraq cleaved through a broken down stone fence, sending tiles and chunks of stone in various directions. Then, she gestured, and the dagger returned, barely a blur whizzing through the air, before it disappeared into a flash of white motes of light, and then nothing. The dagger reappeared in Caelie's hand, and she sheathed it, clasping her other hand over her mouth to keep from laughing out loud. To any observer, it would look as though rattling walls began to burst and shatter, and strange objects whizzed about before disappearing into thin air. Edited by Hadou, Feb 3 2018, 02:24 AM.

To the ghost impersonators, all they saw was a blur, debris flying from a broken down wall, another blur, and a tiny flash of light. This new unknown phenomenon was enough to make them lose their nerves totally, the alpaca being the first to throw the plans of the pseudo-ghosts to the winds and bolt, making a rather terrific noise as it did so. Its human conspirators were quick to follow, although whether they were running to catch the camelid, or running to escape the 'haunted' establishment was anyone's guess. "So," Beryl said, rising from her hiding spot, "job's done, and everyone's happy. Or, almost." So saying, the Earth mage was about walking towards the gate, but then she paused and turned back to take a quick peek at the equipment used for the shoddy haunting of the ruined compound. They looked actually commonplace, but quite scientific: a laboratory burner, an alembic, some test tubes in a rack, and a few pots and books. If Beryl was to make assumptions, the culprits of this haunting were likely science majors of some higher institution of learning. Humming a tune, Beryl began making her way leisurely to the gate, where she spotted Mardo in discussion with the two ghost wannabes and their animal accomplice. She overheard one of them mentioning that the place was haunted, while gesticulating wildly, to which the Poinsettia noble appeared to attempt to reassure them that the resident jirugomancer was already tackling the problem. It seemed this weird mission was coming to a good end. "Well, hello, strangely-clad people," the Seveni said cheerfully. "I suppose introductions should be in order, seeing we haven't met, yes? I am the-- ah, jirugomancer, present to solve Mr. Mardo's ghost problem. Your garb is new to me. Are you from around these parts?" |

Rising to her feet, the white-haired girl watched the hoaxers and their alpaca race off like bats out of hell. While it looked a little like they were running after the alpaca, Caelie was sure they were running for their lives, first and foremost. She turned to her friend, her laughter all but gone, though she was still obviously tickled pink. "Yeah. Worked like a charm." She walked over to all the apparatus set up for the hoax. "What's this? Test tubes, pots, books. Hmmm... looks to me like an alchemy experiment. Maybe they learned a thing or two at the St. Vincent Academy. I wouldn't assume Empyrean, because they don't seem to be mages." She picked a book, 'The Beginners' Guide to Alchemy: Phosphorus and Phosphorigens', which talked mostly about chemical reagents and the various ways they could be mixed, and followed Beryl back to the gate of the dilapidated establishment. There, she found the two hoaxers, thoroughly convinced that the house was haunted, telling Mardo their thoughts. Mardo, on the other hand, believed that they had been pursued by the same ghost he had sent the girls after, and tried pacifying them by telling them that the situation was under control. Since Beryl was in the mood to play along, and Caelie had gotten her amusement from watching the hoaxers flee, she kept silent and leafed through the book, as she listened to the conversation between Mardo and his hired 'Jirugomancer'. |

At the approach of a newcomer, the alpaca became skittish and inclined to flee, causing the male pseudo-ghost to grasp it firmly, but gently, by its long, slender neck. As he tried to calm it down, his female companion turned towards Beryl with a flustered expression. "What a question!" she exclaimed, with an air of surprised condescension. "Of course we're from these parts. Where else would we be from?" Her attempt to appear condescending only served to amuse the Seveni, because the ghost impersonators would soon realize that attempting superiority would only be a shot in the knee for them, as the two mages had effectively pulled the rug quite out from under them. They just didn't seem to have noticed it yet. "Oh I'm sorry," the Seveni said with wide-eyed innocence; one who had no idea of the proceedings of the day would not believe Beryl knew anything of the matter, with her reaction. "It's just that I know a bit about clothing in Fiore, and yours doesn't seem to match any conventional or traditional dressing forms. So, if you're from these parts, why are you dressed up so strange?" Her arms crossed, the Seveni looked less innocent now, and more in the know. The ghost impersonators began to guess that perhaps they had been had somehow. "That question is unnecessary," replied the male wanna-be ghost, having seemed to pacify his alpaca friend. "People should be allowed to dress as they please, yes? No one made you fashion police of any kind, and your dressing itself leaves a lot to be... desired." "I'm glad you like what you see," the Earth mage replied, totally unruffled by the weak attempt to turn the heat on her. "So, given that your absolutely ghastly dress sense is not a crime worthy of arrest, though for my part I think that people like you, who think that wearing veritable eyesores such as what you have on is alright, should be demanding of police action, may I ask why you are trespassing on private property? This, I believe, isn't a public park or the likes. And I wonder, was it the ghost who was boiling all those strange-smelling concoctions back there?" "It is possible..." the lady pseudo-ghost said weakly. Her male counterpart said nothing, though he looked like a five-year old whose hand was in the cookie jar when the authorities walked in. "Really?" Beryl asked, tickled pink, though she prevented herself from laughing. Where was Caelie at this point in time? |

As she listened to the hoaxers try to 'defend' themselves and deny that they had been in the business of making people think there was indeed a ghost haunting these grounds, Caelie released a long breath and closed the book. She had expected that they would just confess and get it done with. They had been, after all, caught with their pants down (not literally, of course!), yet they still tried to appear innocent. "Ghosts don't 'cook', nor do they require phosphorigens to create glows of any sort. There are different categories of ghosts, and various ways of classifying them. As far as haunters are concerned, we've mostly got weak haunters or whispers, the anchored, of which many are poltergeists, vendettas, which are extremely dangerous, and a host of others. May I go on?" As she expected, her request was met with silence, then the female hoaxer began to say, "All that is nonsense-" but Caelie raised a hand and interjected. "If there was any ghost in the vicinity that could interact with the material world, and it was interested in making the place uncomfortable for the living to stay in, you guys would have been seriously hurt by now. The mere fact you could exist in such premises means either the ghost was a whisper, and I sensed no such thing in there, or, you are the ghosts." Now, the only response she got was a nervous squirming. Caelie smiled. "I was responsible for the mayhem that drove you and your alpaca friend out, and trust me, that was the work of a real ghost." Of course, that was a lie; Caelie had no such powers, but such bluffs were good at making such amateurs confess quick. "Trust me, he's not really pleased that you're tarnishing the... uh, good name of evil ghosts everywhere. He even tried to take me out; that's why I suddenly vanished, but I'm not easy to kill, even though it looks otherwise." Using her magic, Caelie manipulated a gentle stream of wind around herself to lift her hair, although no one else would feel any drafts, unless they were very close. The effect of her hair standing all by itself made the two hoaxers assume another preternatural event was amiss, and it, needless to say, made them very uncomfortable. "I'm getting impatient, so I'll cut to the chase. If you lie, I cannot assure you that you will leave here in one piece; you have, after all, stirred virtually the entire spectral community against you at this point. An before you say I summoned any ghosts here, remember that I was summoned here because there was already a ghost here. So, was there really a ghost here, or were you two responsible for a deliberate hoax against Mr. Mardo?" Once again, the two were silent. Caelie's eyes slowly narrowed, and the rate at which her snow white hair was disturbed increased sharply. That was enough to spook the truth out of them. "Err... yes! Yes! The latter is uh... the case. There wasn't any ghost..." Caelie smiled at them, and her hair fell. Then she turned on her heel and walked towards the exit gate. "Guess I'll leave the 'whys' to you, Mr. Mardo. Your ghost problem is resolved. I'll be outside, Beryl." |

"What? No ghost?" Mardo asked incredulously, looking not a bit menacing. "I'd be very pleased to have explanations," the man boomed, glowering at the two ghost hoaxers. The two culprits, seeing Mardo's fierce countenance, cowered in obvious fright, causing Beryl to sigh inwardly. "Great going, Caelie, leaving me here to finish up this mess..." the Seveni thought, as she took a step towards the Poinsettian noble to probably prevent him from doing anything alarming to the trespassers. It seemed, however, that her fears were unfounded. On seeing the two ghost wannabes shrink back, Mardo's hostile expression instantly dissolved, and he looked a lot more amenable, though confusion was still evident on his features. "Stop looking at me as if I'm going to eat you," he chided, albeit gently. "I just want to know what the fuss is about ghosts on my property." Feeling more assured of their safety, the tense stances eased, and the woman drew to her full height, drawing a pair of spectacles from her pocket, which she perched on her nose, and cleared her throat gently, as she more resembled an academician than a prankster. "I'm Indigo, and this is Jet," she stated, gesturing at her male companion at the mention of the second name, the man bowing slightly. "We're from St. Vincent's, and we're doctorate students, I specializing in Botany, and he in Zoology. We're interested in rare, uncommon and endangered species, which is how we acquired Fluff," the alpaca was gestured towards, "as Jet saved him from some poachers in a data collection trip abroad. In any case, I spotted a very rare plant in the backyard of this demesne some weeks back, and we decided to alert the owner of this place to it, so we could extract it, or if that was unacceptable, plead with them not to destroy it." It was Jet's turn to speak. "We encountered a horrid, short fellow, who we assumed to be the owner of the place, or at least be well-connected to the owner, with the way he was moving around. He threatened to have us arrested for trespassing, and paid no heed to our words, no matter how much we begged for the preservation of the plant. We'd have just left dejected, but Indi overheard him saying something about getting weedkiller for the 'nasty buggers'." Indigo took over seamlessly, as though the two had planned this speech. "Naturally, something had to be done. So we took action to keep the plant safe, while we sought of a way to carefully remove it, seeing as transplanting the specimen is a delicate process, thanks to its fragile but long roots. And so here we are. If you're the owner of this property, we throw ourselves on your mercy. Please, spare the plant..." "White petals with a tiny blue center, would that be the description of the plant?" Mardo asked. "Flowers open at evening, and its fragrance is lovely. The Telperian lily." The two scholars stared at him in shock. "Wait! How did you...?" Mardo smiled. "I am a plant enthusiast, as my jirugomancer may testify. I have a flower bed full of Telperians," he replied. "I suspect the fellow you met was my butler. Hmmm, to think I imagined that your curious pet was a ghost. I had already dedicated many hedge statues to it in the hopes that it would stop haunting my property, but with this new information, it seems we are going to all reach a great consensus. That flower is not going anywhere; in fact, I shall plant more around where it grows. And the rest of you, including your pet animal, and the jirugomancer and her fellows, will join me for an evening cup of tea." Beryl held up her hands to protest, but Mardo's stare permitted no disobedience. She signed. "Fine. I'll get Caelie and Beatrix. Here's to hoping this evening event concludes more pleasantly than the earlier one...." "Mission Completed!" |
