"I think the lightning is a natural phenomenon," Balthazar replied, looking rather unperturbed by the fact that lightning was trying to roast his colleagues, or that they had even left him behind, despite the fact that they were all aware that he had mobility challenges, as far as the use of his legs were concerned. "At least, as young Livinia would say, that's what the record books tell us. In any case, it's been documented in a book, sadly destroyed now, that this sky's dimension has the curious effect of having electrical affinity with Earthland-based magics. In a more straightforward way, if you're not close to a large structure, like this one, which may help to dissipate the charge created by our innate magic, expect to be crisped. Many rock formations here have the ability to dissipate electrical charge, so once we're close to a rock formation, we're safe." The old man smiled, looking unconcerned about the threats of danger all around. "I'll say, it's wise to have a bit of fun like those younglings are doing, right? When they get a little older and have children, it becomes so much harder to enjoy one's self, doesn't it?" He paused for a moment, suddenly realizing he had forgotten to answer Caelie's question. "Ah, I forgot your question. I have control of spatial magics, so don't worry about me. Funny how the knights in your Fiore seem all about not allowing magic users to join their ranks. Discrimination against mages, I wonder...." He turned to look at Caelie again. "So, White One, do you want a lift?" Meanwhile, as the group made their way towards the rock spire, Nadine drew her sword and stopped stock still. A bolt of green lightning descended as she raised her weapon. There was a green flash, and the black-haired paladin's sword began to glow fiercely. Then she pointed it towards the earth, releasing a steady stream of energy which hoisted her into the air, effectively levitating her, and at a speed sufficient to outpace the running Uther and catch up with Beryl. "In case you're getting winded and not planning on having your pretty hair singed off by the lightning," Nadine said, slowing down just enough to talk to her, "you'll want to make it to a large rock formation, like that over there." So saying, she pointed off to the left, to a large grey rock. Beryl nodded and changed direction, causing Uther and Livinia to do the same. Of course, Nadine got there before them all. "Thanks-- a lot--" Beryl said between breaths, as the lightning stopped striking. "You're actually a sweet person, you know." Nadine huffed in response and said nothing, as the other two knights arrived at the rock, panting to catch their breaths. |

"If it is indeed a natural phenomenon, then our bodies are generating a positive charge, most likely, which the negative lightning is being attracted towards. Or the other way around. Perhaps some electromagnetism tweaking device could 'confuse' the lightning and keep us from being its targets..." The statement was more a personal musing, as Caelie considered whether she couldn't try to put together something to serve that purpose. Given a bit of time, and if some of the right materials were about, she could, but so far, this place looked bleak. The concept of hiding out at rock formations explained why the lightning wasn't seeking the two of them out, stationary though they were. Balthazar spoke fondly about having a bit of fun while one was still young, which elicited a smirk from Caelie. "I can safely say, sir, that the life I live is chock full of this kind of... fun, so have no worries about me. I'm sure I'll 'enjoy' myself a lot more beyond today, provided I live that long." Caelie had already suspected that Balthazar had some sort of space-magic ability, evident in the way he knew how to manipulate Beryl's pendant to produce certain space-time effects. He commented about the Knights of Fiore, who did not permit magic users into their ranks, and Caelie realized that she might have joined the Knights, since they were defenders of the people... no, wait. She couldn't. She was not known for keeping the rules, and had no problems breaking laws to do what she felt was right. She would have probably been kicked out, either way. "People tend to feel safer around others that are similar to them. I guess the non-magic users would want to have their own fighting force, just in case... Yeah, I guess discrimination is a concept that isn't going to die away anytime soon." Balthazar offered to give her a lift. In her opinion, that was a very brilliant idea. No use wasting stamina, running from lightning, when she was not sure if she would need it later, and Caelie knew that stamina was not one of her strong points. "I would be honored, sir," she replied. Space magic was one of the magics that intrigued her, and she always sought to interact with different forms of teleportation, so that she could learn a little more about the magic. And, of course, it saved her the stamina cost of playing dodge ball with the sky. |

"Hey, Blondie," Uther said, as the group huddled close to the large rock caught their breaths, winding up for the next run, "Your white-haired friend isn't following us." Livinia elbowed him in the ribs. "You're such a boor," the scholar of the knights said, a hint of disgust in her voice. "Beryl has a name, and it's not 'Blondie'. In any case, her friend is with Balthazar, so there's absolutely nothing to worry about concerning her." Uther raised an eyebrow. "Did you just call me a bore? I'm not boring, I'll have you know." "I said 'boor', not 'bore'," Livinia replied with an exasperated sigh. "You really need to work on your manners before--" Naddine suddenly rapped her drawn blade against the rock which the knights and Beryl were sheltering at. "We'll have all the time to argue when we've gotten the Sigil of Dreams and gotten out of this horrid place. So let's get our butts up and moving. The Spine is not far now," she said, rising and walking away from the rock. And Nadine was right; the base of the foreboding spire of rock looked to be about close to a kilometer away. As a streak of green lightning descended, as she had done before, the knight raised her sword, absorbing the energy into her weapon. Then with a burst of green energy, she took off once again, in the direction of the Spine. Uther looked at Livinia and grinned, who responded with a comical pout, before the two took off again. Beryl waited for them to get a decent start; she wasn't interested in getting fried by the lightning trying to roast someone else. Then she took off running again, not at full speed, but not slow enough to be threatened by the descending thunderbolts. She was sure she would be able to get to the spire with this next run. The ground suddenly fell away, about six hundred meters into Beryl's run, and she noticed that the Spine of Chaos actually rose from a well-concealed crater, hidden by the jagged topography of the land. The land in the crater appeared to have been scorched time and again, the rocks made black by some strange fire, and she noticed that there was no lightning activity in the vicinity of the crater, seeing that her companions had stopped running, and were standing beside a square hole roughly cut in the ground, with a series of stairs descending from it into the earth. Sliding into the crater, the Seveni also noticed that there were many holes similar to the one beside which they stood. Meanwhile, Balthazar turned to face Caelie. "It seems the others have made it to the area around the Spine of Chaos," he said with a nod. "Let us go." So saying, he rose to full height and twirled his staff, as it began to weave a trail of green light. Then he slammed it tip first against the ground, Caelie would see a blinding flash, feel her skin tingle, and the two were in the crater, a little distance from Beryl and the other knights. "That's cheating," Nadine said, sheathing her sword, although she smiled as she did so. "Nonsense, you used your weapon as well to get here," the old man said, hobbling over to join the other knights. Beryl, meanwhile, was staring into the darkness, as she drew one of her lachryma-powered lamps from her backpack. "What is this aperture?" she asked wonderingly, as Balthazar came to stand at her side. "That's our way in." |

As the old man straightened himself up, Caelie stepped closer to him, almost instinctively, though it probably wasn't necessary. From what she knew about space-time magics, some of them had the ability to transport a group of people, so long as they were within the space of a certain field. That was most likely the type of magic Balthazar was about to use, and if she was not close enough, he would have asked her to come closer. She watched his staff with some interest, as his twirling it overhead caused it to weave the pattern of a wide ring above him, almost reminiscent of a spectral green halo, save that the empty space within its ring was too large, and it was not close enough to his head. Then, as usual, he smote the ground with the glowing point of the staff. There was a momentary flash of light, which blinded Caelie for that instant, and the telltale tingling of her skin, a by-product effect of Balthazar's magic. Perhaps the flash of light was generated from the staff; perhaps it was just her sense of sight trying to make up for the breach of space and time. Maybe that could be someone's academic endeavor in the near future, but what was more important was that they had arrived quite close to the others. There was no wind in the crater, indicating that the weather was generated as a sort of defense against anyone who would venture into the Spine of Chaos uninvited... if there was any invitation for this kind of place at all. The place looked like a war zone, though, making Caelie wonder whether the burn marks were as the result of a battle fought here some time ago, or a warning of some passive traps waiting to spring up and destroy the unwary adventurer. Interestingly, Caelie did not suffer any side-effects that come with having a very bright light flashed in your face, and she could make out Nadine mildly chiding Balthazar, though she was smiling. "Hmmm, she could do with smiling more often; she looks better that way," Caelie thought to herself as she followed Balthazar to the square hole in the ground which Beryl was pointing a lachryma powered lamp into. "I don't known whether I've asked this question before, but should we be expecting anything?" |

Uther responded to Caelie's question by placing his sword in a ready stance and stepping in such a way that his bulk all but obstructed entrance into the ominous hole into which Beryl was shining her lachryma torch. "Frankly," he said, staring into the hole, "I'll be surprised if we don't meet anything nasty. So let's just be prepared for the worst. I'd advice that you draw your weapon." "If you don't mind," Beryl said, rapping on the back of the knight's armor with the knuckle of her left fist, "it's somehow difficult to get a move on with you perched in the doorway." Uther shrugged. "Was just answering a question. Everyone ready?" "Before that," Beryl protested, "I should be the one to go in first, seeing that I have the light source." "I'm the point-man, so you can always give me the light source. My abilities are suited to taking damage, so I'm strategically the best to be in this position, unless you're sure that your resilience is higher than mine," the young male responded. He had a point, so there was nothing to be gained from arguing the matter any further. Beryl handed the light over to him, and the group proceeded into the darkness. The stone corridor suddenly opened up into a wide subterranean expanse, with a maze of black stone staircases all over the place, like some bizarre maze. In the center of the whole maddening crisscross of stairs, a pillar of white stone rose to some unidentified point, with a stairway running in a helical pattern up the white pillar. "I believe that is where we need to get to--" Balthazar began, when an eerie scream cut him off. Along the walls, difficult to see, thanks to the darkness, crawled strange humanoid creatures, shorter than humans, with twisted limbs and black skin. They had no eyes, sickeningly wide mouths rimmed with wicked teeth, and their twisted limbs ended in sharp claws which made a 'clack' sound as the scrambled across the cavern's walls. "Move, people!" Beryl yelled, not needing to be told that these things posed a threat, as the black monsters swarmed towards the group. She began running and jumping from one stair to the next, with the hope of reaching the white pillar without much incident. The others began following suit, weapons at the ready. |

Uther may have as well been the door, what with the way he stood in the entrance and all but blocked everyone else from going in. "I appreciate the advice," she replied, "but I'd like to see what I'm up against before I 'draw my weapon'. If whatever's down there is fast enough to shank me before I can equip myself, then I guess holding my weapon wouldn't be enough to save me from its speed." While Beryl wanted to go in first, Uther would hear naught of it, and eventually led the way in, armed with his sword and Beryl's torch. The journey downwards was not so long before they found themselves in a massive cave, designed with a dizzying array of obsidian staircases. Against all that black, however, stood a white spire, like a beacon to them, inviting them to their next objective. Everything was quiet... a perfect stage for an ambush... The shriek cut off the old knight from continuing his statement, and Caelie felt a pulse of heat against her chest. She didn't bother to look at the source of the heat. It was her pendant, the Heart of the Sun, and what it was simply telling her was that whatever was in this place with them, meant them nothing but ill. She looked up, and saw them. Because of how their bodies blended with the darkness, it was difficult to say just how many they were, but from experience, with the way her pendant was glowing, they were quite many. Caelie sighed. She had never really liked 'minion battles'. What was more epic was slugging it up against one huge enemy, a gladiator match which pitted will against will... Caelie instinctively headed for the white spire, which was where everyone else was headed, anyway. She had no idea whether the color would repel these fiends, or if it was just a more comforting backdrop to fight against. Glancing up, she grimaced and called out: "These things are using the ceiling to their advantage. They'll probably get to wherever else it is we're running to. And we can easily get surrounded. I am not for running blindly, nor am I for letting them dictate our pace. We need a strong light. If we can identify their numbers, we can come up with a sound strategy." |

As the group fled across the maze of stairwells hanging over the abyss, Caelie suggested that they figure out the number of shrieking monstrosities that gave them chase. As the white-haired mage had rightly said, some of the black monsters were dropping from the ceiling, in the hopes that they would alight on the running party, or get to a point before them and intercept them. Those that dropped towards the running knights were quickly wiped out by a white wave of burning light projected from Uther's longsword. The wave also illuminated the area momentarily enough for one with a quick eye to guess they were about a half gross in number. "Well, they don't look very few, if I may say so," the Seveni yelled, as she came face to face with one of the homunculi, which leaped at her with open jaws. The Seveni sidestepped and slashed at the creature, severing its head clean off with one of her shortswords. She sniffed at the black-colored ichor on her blade and wrinkled her nose at the smell. "At least they're easy to..." The sound of breaking stone cut the Earth mage off as she turned in the direction of the sound. A gigantic snake, black but with blue runic markings, had smashed the staircase behind her, causing Nadine, who was right on her heels to totter momentarily as the giant reptile doubled back towards her. Without skipping a heartbeat, the Seveni threw one of her weapons at the snake. The blade made a graceful arc before lodging in the side of the snake's head, just as Nadine fell with a cry. In a blink, Beryl vanished and reappeared close to her weapon, driving her second weapon deep into the beast, as her free hand caught Nadine's wrist deftly, allowing the knight to swing and jump to a lower staircase. Pulling out her weapons, Beryl launched herself off the monster snake, dropping beside Nadine, as the reptile turned on them, its eyes aflame with rage as ichor seeped from the wounds in its head. "You guys go on ahead, we'll catch up," the Seveni yelled to the rest of the group, as she and Nadine prepared to fight the snake. But the others would find that going on would not be as easy as expected, as all the other black humanoids began massing together, fusing, combining. The massing blackness suddenly launched itself over the knights and the snow-haired mage, and spattered on the white pillar, before drawing itself together to form a giant scorpion, which waited silently for whoever would get to the white pillar. |

The brief flash of light caused by Uther's sword magic, which served to incinerate some of the creeps that had tried to drop in on them, also served to enable Caelie see just about how many the creatures were. "Goodness! They're more than half a hundred!" Her startled thoughts hardly showed on her face though, but the prospects were not too pretty. Even a very powerful warrior would hardly last long against a swarm, unless they were impervious to the swarm's attacks, or had a sort of 'crowd control' ability. For now, running was a good idea. The loud crash behind them told Caelie that the wall climbing scamps were not the only ones they had to contend with. This one was a colossal snake with glowing blue etchings on its body. It seemed like everything here came in black, and without being told, Caelie was sure that the snake was chummy with the scamps. For a moment, Nadine was in a very precarious position, but Beryl managed to salvage the situation with quick thinking and weapon magic. "Well, that is interesting," Caelie mused, interested in the power of Beryl's blade. She did have something of that nature. Did they come from the same place? There was still the problem of the scamps to worry about, and now the group was separated. And that was when the scamps decided to merge together to form a more massive antagonist. That posed some advantages and some disadvantages. For now, Caelie would keep those thoughts to herself and focus on fighting the large arachnid that waited for them on the other side. And for those that were eager to see her draw her weapons, now was the time. Caelie strode towards the monstrosity, without arms and armor, in the first instant. In the next, with but a mental suggestion and a twist of magic from the unassuming bronze ring on her finger, Caelie was wielding, for all intents and purposes, a silver sword. Also, her cold-resistant garb was gone, and in its place, a full body suit, almost as dark as the caverns in which she was, save for the lines of soft, pale light that designed the suit here and there. Holding Songblade in her right hand, she called over her shoulder, to whichever of the knights was going to join her: "We need to gauge its abilities, first and foremost. It's speed, strength, durability and any special ability. Also bear in mind that it forged itself from multiple entities. I assume that it is capable of fragmentation into smaller units, and/or high level regeneration. If anyone has a decent long-ranged attack, that would be a good place to kick off from." |

The advantage was that there was no black ugly dancing on the ceiling and trying to get a bite out of the Earthland people. The disadvantage was that there was a giant snake, and there was a giant scorpion, both as ugly as sin, and neither being predisposed to solve whatever grievances they had with the intruders via peaceful negotiations. It was very likely that the snake was a composite formation, much like the scorpion, which meant that less black uglies had been fused to form the snake. Beryl was minded that the other knights would not have to help herself and Nadine face the abhorrent reptile. Meanwhile, as Caelie armed herself and approached, the arachnid put its feet off the pillar on which it had stood horizontally, each spiny leg making a loud clicking sound as it balanced itself on the stairways that had made a makeshift platform closest to the white pillar. Its chitinous armor looked more demonic than biological, with a myriad of spikes and spines on its carapace. It snapped its pincers together in challenge as it waited for its opponents, who were majorly the white-haired mage, and the bulky young male knight striding forth to catch up with her. "When it comes to gauging an enemy, milady, that is specifically what I was designed to do," Uther exclaimed confidently, brandishing his sword, as it began to glow with a white-hot light. "That, and kicking all types of enemy ass!" The last words were said with a roar, as he stepped forward, launching a wave similar to the one he had used to incinerate the black aberrations some time back. The wave slammed into what would pass off as the monster scorpion's face, sending spatters of black ichor all over the place. Momentarily, those facing the scorpion would see a strange blue organ emitting a dull glow as it throbbed, before it was quickly covered again by the ichor, as the black matter seeped across the places it had spattered to fuse with the scorpion again. The monster stepped forward, swinging down its sting, which was suddenly blocked by a runic shield summoned by Livinia, who had run up to stand beside her fellow knight and the mage. Uther grinned at her and swung his blade again, this time severing a pincer clean off as it swung to attack the people under the shield. On the part of the snake, Beryl and Nadine found a bit more difficulty in dealing with it, as there was little space to maneuver. But it wasn't an irredeemable situation, as the two young women quickly decided on a strategy to execute. Releasing a blast of energy from her blade, Nadine launched herself at the snake. That was a foolish move, and the snake prepared to perform a counterattack that would surely cost the young knight her life. A foolish move indeed, until Beryl shot the beast in its left eye with Regulus. As the snake thrashed from the pain, Nadine, still airborne, pointed her blade, with its glowing runes, at the serpent, and bathed it in a stream of brightly-colored energy, taking off half of its head. The snake, however, was anything but dead, uglier now, as it quivered in rage, although it seemed inclined to take a more intelligent approach to handling its opponents. |

Uther was the first to reach Caelie, and as he stepped forward with his attack, she stopped and waited for him to go through with it. The attack revealed two things: one, the scorpion's armor was not so powerful. With some effort, the Songblade could probably cut through it. Two, as she had suspected, it could regenerate itself. She had managed to spy a strange, important looking organ, which was soon covered by its regenerating tissues. "It regenerates, alright, but we still have a window we can use to our advantage. We will attack it from different sides. Unless it's faking it, which is not likely, I can keep up with its speed. We can work at defending and counter-attacking its offensive structures, and when it regenerates and prepares for its next onslaught, we can aim at exposing and destroying that organ." Caelie stepped out from under the shield and ran along the scorpion's other side, the one with the functioning pincer. As she expected, it reacted, driving the open pincer towards her in an attempt at trapping and crushing her with the appendage. She jumped clean over the pincer, sword gripped in both hands, and brought it down to chop a leg clean off. At her position, the scorpion could not attack her with its pincers. Only its tail was available to it. And that was part of her plan. Once that tail, which was its most versatile and farthest reaching weapon, was out of the way, they could press the attack before it regenerated itself sufficiently. |
