I don't even know.

Orbs of gently shining, golden white, sunshine colored light floated slightly above Jaxus' head, weaving and bobbing back and forth, illuminating the darkened forest as he and Persies, perched on his shoulder trudged on in the dead of night. "Ca-Caaw-Caw-Ca-Caw...?" //Shouldn't we rest, Jaxus...?// "We're fine Persies, I still gotta'lot energy ta' spare, we overslept and sides, I think we're hot on the trail. Every minute counts.~" OWOOOOOOWWLLL! As a piercing wolf cry pitched through the night, Jaxus turned his head to turn half way back towards the direction of the howl, raising an eyebrow. After traveling for so long, so frequently, and experiencing the Boscan war, afew wolves seemed far less intimidating than when he first started his journey. Yet and still, he also knew of the many rumors of strange, magical creatures in the forest. In fact, the last time he was here was almost a year ago, rescuing an endangered, magical beast from a band of poachers with his guild mate, Jayce. Alas, such fond memories seemed so far away. Leaves cracking under his feet, Jaxus pushed aside a long, thin branch as he passed through thick brush, following his keen intuition, or whimsy, to be more precise. Just afew days ago, a woman came to the guild in tears wishing to get assistance from Blue Pegasus, her kids having recently disappeared. Though the city guard scoured the city, little could be found, and the mother knew that her children admired the mages of the guild, and talked about it, and their fabled forest with great excitement. By chance, she arrived near the entrance when Jaxus was considering taking up a job at the guild. Of course, Jaxus' immediately stepped up to learn what was bothering the woman, volunteering as a representative of the guild. With that, they were led here, camping out in the forest for the last two days tirelessly searching for the mother's children. Yet and still, the fatigue from pushing himself had taken a toll on his reserves, as usual, he was pushing himself to far and putting up a tough show. "Ca-Caw! Ca-Ca-Caw!" //Jaxus! Look over there!// "H-Huh...?" Breaking out of the thick foliage, Jaxus took note of what looked like a figure abit off in the woods. Squinting his eyes ever so slightly and stepping closer in a casual, non threatening manner, Jaxus affirmed that he indeed was seeing the frame of a person in the darkness, though, that of a shorter person. "Nice eyes, Pardner'.~" Raising a hand towards them as he stepped closer, the orbs of light around him giving the faintest glow, Jaxus approached the figure. "Oiii! You one'a the lost kids Ms. Grimm's lookin' fer'?~" Due to the darkness, and proximity between the two, Jaxus had not yet seen Leonidas' facial tattoo, nor many other features. Ironically, explosions of light came naturally to him, but using his magic to effectively light up dark areas wasn't too effective, go figure. |

Lamentation had become a nightly occurrence for Leonidas. It was not the fear of the dark that drove him to think of such a thing, or the joy of it, but one simple fact. At night, he was alone. When he was alone, he had no reason to conceal his true emotions. At that moment, he stood in an almost slumped position, leaning against one of the many peculiar trees in Lavender Forest. The man's knuckles were stained in unnaturally dark blood, traces of it still evident on the tree supporting his weight. A blank stare exuded on his face, boring into the darkness that he could see all too well through. A few moments earlier, Leonidas had been facing the almost glistening white tree, burying his fists into its thick skin to no avail. The tang of salt had stained his face, or at least one side of it, even before his hands cried out in anguish. The pain meant nothing, the tears, everything. Were they a sign of weakness? Yes. For once, the blonde-haired man accepted such a thing. It was proof of his humanity, however little he still possessed. Love, hate, and fear. Constantly his mind revolved around those three emotions. At times, they would all blend together, at others each was as distinct as the blades of a razor. In either scenario, they painted a larger picture. Love, for Eris. Hate, at himself. Fear, for and of the world. Overarching it all was Leonidas's past, and to some extent, his future. That was why he appeared battered, defeated, that night. A storm inside the crimson-eyed man was slowly ripping him to shreds. It was times like these that he acknowledged it. An absolute wreck was his appearance, aside from his blood-stained hands, his hair was completely disheveled, even more than usually, and his clothes stained a various mix of brown and reds along with most of the left sleeve and pant leg being torn either off or only small bits remaining. The skin that lay underneath looked completely unharmed, and was barely dirty at all compared to the filth he was wearing. Whatever the case was, Leonidas didn't care in the slightest. He saw the light coming from far, far away. It angered him that someone else was in the forest bordering Poinsettia at such a time, and that they just happened to be using a light source of some kind. The blonde-haired man disliked that an individual would be so inconsiderate to simply barge into the wilderness bearing a torch. Inconsiderate, and utterly stupid. Still, it was obvious that the approacher was not about to change course. Silently, Leonidas grabbed a fold in the remainder of his shirt that wasn't disgusting in appearance and wiped all trace of moisture, and therefore emotion, from his visage. The man, and the bird, it would seem, that were approaching him seemed harmless, at first. Of course, the blonde-haired man knew the art of deception very well, and as far as he could gather the couple could be hunters of some sort. Wary, but not drawing any conclusions, he studied them further. The man, although he looked more like a teenager than anything, had a shade of hair that reminded Leonidas of storm clouds on a gloomy day, and the bird white with specks of gray in her plumage. He couldn't guess the species of the bird, but he figured the animal was a female. She was rather small, after all. The charcoal-haired teenager matched to an extent, being what would probably be considered below average in height, although easily a full head taller than the crimson-eyed man. Alas, the man spoke, going on about a child and someone named Ms. Grimm. Leonidas's eyes staring straight at the other individual, he replied. "I know nothing of lost children or a supposed Ms. Grimm. If you'll dim that light of yours, I'll be willing to help, though." Perhaps what the somewhat-dysfunctional man needed now was a distraction. Needless to say, one had certainly come his way. |

"Caw..." //Uh..// //Uh...// As Jaxus approached closer and closer, more and more details came into view. He first noted their blonde colored hair, followed by their crimson eyes, and a very prominent looking tattoo that traced down from their forehead to their cheek. Their clothes looked torn and damaged on the left sleeve and pants leg, but otherwise, stained with red and brown tones. Dirt and blood presumably, if Jaxus' experience as a wandering hero counted anyway. What caught Jaxus' attention the most, however, was the blood stained hands of the new figure. Jaxus started his career using more punches than magic, he trained in martial arts, he's fought multiple enemies hand to hand. That said, he already came to the conclusion that the individual was probably punching something prior, barely taking note of the bits of crimson upon the tree close to them. Before Jaxus could react much, the figure spoke up, noting they knew nothing of the lost children, nor his employer. As Leonidas replied, Jaxus' eyes meeting his, a confused, kind of dopey expression crossed his face, mouth agape, casually scratching his head with his index finger before looking over to Persies, then merely shrugging with a sigh. He really didn't know if he should apologize for mistaking them as a kid, ask about the hand injuries, or simply thank them for their offer. First things first though...with the flick of his wrist for dramatic flare, every light around Jaxus disappeared in an instant, leaving the two in the natural darkness that once existed before Jaxus' intrusion. "Sorry bout' that.~ Didn' know anyone else was out here. I really preciate' the offer ta' help though.~" Jaxus tucked both hands behind is head, elbows outstretched to the sides, offering a toothy smile as he gave a brief nod towards Leonidas. "Ta' be honest, I ain't got much but I'd be willin' ta' pay ya' for the help. Name's Jaxus by the way, Jaxus Morbane, and this'er is my travelin' partner, Persies.~" "Ca-Caaw-Caaw.~" //A pleasure.~"// With the last part, Jaxus turned his head to his shoulder, directing attention towards his avian companion, then back to Leonidas. "Nice ta' meetcha'.~" Though Leonidas was guarded, reasonably so, Jaxus himself seemed to show zero signs of hostility, or even suspicion, keeping his hands casually behind his head the entire time, his posture and stance, unprepared for combat. As Persies always told him, he was too laid back for his own good. |

The blonde-haired man was somewhat surprised to see the green-eyed teenager actually take his advice and completely turn off the light that he could only assume was being produced magically. Jaxus, as he revealed his name to be, either hadn't thought of all the vicious animals he could have attracted from miles away by shining a light, or was very confident in his combat abilities. More than likely, the answer lay in a combination of both those factors. It wasn't all that dark out in the first place, Leonidas thought, although he supposed he was more than a bit biased when it came to such a notion. At the same time, Jaxus had also offered to pay him if he helped look for the children that were seemingly missing. A slight hint at a smile on his face, one hand shoved in a pocket and the other running through his lemon-hued mop of hair, Leonidas replied. "Nice to meet you too, Jaxus and Persies. I'm Leonidas." Pushing himself off the trunk of the tree he was leaning on, he continued, quirking his head to one side for an additional effect. "There's no need to pay me, you're just trying to help some little kids find their way back home, no? Anyone should be more then happy to oblige," the crimson-eyed man reasoned, a somewhat playful tone inflected in his voice. The man doubted that the children were still alive if they had indeed wandered into Lavender Forest. More than anything, he was curious about the light mage and his companion. The pair so far were very amusing to watch. "So, do you know what they look like?" |

As Leonidas brushed his hair and gave his own name, Jaxus only kept his jovial, laid back expression, giving a nod, Persies imitating his motion in perfect sync and time. Though it wasn't quite possible, something through the birds body language and eyes made it seem as if they were smiling, mirroring Jaxus' demeanor even further. As Leonidas pushed themselves off of the tree they rested upon, quirking their head to the side, Jaxus' left arm came from resting on his shoulder, gently stroking his chin, mouth agape once more in confusion and cocking his head to the opposite side Leonidas had quirked his, Persies matching the same motion in unison. The tattoo, and the mannerisms caught Jaxus off guard, something on his instincts probably. Only a brief moment passed, before Jaxus' smile grew into a bigger, childish grin with a childish laugh. Of course, Jaxus was never the type to judge someone based on appearance, or instinct, but of their character. "Eheheh.~ Not often a stranger's willin' ta' help someone without payment, thank ya'.~ Ta' be honest, we kiiinda', maaaybe, sorta'...went under our guild's nose here. That Grimm lady seemed really poor, so I kinda' offered ta' help fer' free.~" Of course, it's not like his guild would necessary disapprove of his actions, considering the main ideology that magic should be used to help people, and create a utopia. Yet and still, Jaxus "really" didn't want to risk being scolded at by any of his senior guild members. All the while, Persies merely stared at Leonidas in a curious, observant manner. "Anyway, Ms. Grimm said her kids were pretty young, but they're two sets of twins, what're their names again, uh...Hansel, Gresel...Hantel...and Gretel...I think. Two boys, two girls, all blonde hair. Ain't much of a description, but nuff' ta' work with.~ I've mostly worked through most'a the forest by now, been headin' ta' the outer edges ta' see if I can find anythin'. Don't spouse you'd have seen any tracks matchin' that description, ey?" Edited by SilverRush, May 9 2017, 02:36 AM.

So the light mage was a part of a guild. Leonidas was a bit surprised to hear such a thing, as Jaxus and his bird seemed like an independent duo, but he supposed not every guild member was deeply attached to their organization. The crimson-eyed man couldn't care less about Grimoire Heart himself, aside from the fact that they had some of the best knowledge on magic in Fiore. Straightening his head, he replied. "Just because you're a part of a guild doesn't mean you can't do things of your accord. Helping out someone in need isn't against any guild policy I know of." That was a lie. A lot of guilds had rather dark rules, many consisting of things like 'survival of the fittest'. Leonidas didn't understand why guilds had creeds and laws and the like in the first place. They were just additional stipulations bound to factions whose sole purpose, in his opinion, was to protect their members from the law. If someone wanted to break one such rule, they could just leave the guild. Or not get caught. After all, their reign didn't reach across all of the country, unlike the military. Jaxus described the children, although not very well in Leonidas's opinion. Certainly, the fact that all four of them were twins of some sort was interesting, and could prove useful, but Ms. Grimm, assuming that she was the one who had given the descriptions must have been rather distraught to not even mention heights or eye colors. Well, at least they weren't all brunettes. That would leave a much greater leeway for mistaken identity. "Pretty young and blonde haired, hmm? I think I can see where you got confused. I can assure you I'm quite a bit older than I look," the man replied, a chuckle evident in his voice. Quite a bit was the understatement of the day, he supposed. "Now that you mention it, I did notice some small footprints towards the far side of the forest. I don't think we're too far away from them." Pointing in the direction he had seen such a thing with the hand that had previously been on his head, the blonde-haired man started walking, footsteps falling lightly, not waiting for Jaxus or Persies to reply. "Heheh, true nuff'.~ Though, I did talk ta' a Tartaros mage once, their guild ain't too inta' that I guess.~" "Ca-Caw-Caaw-Caw-Caw, Caa-Caw...?" //You do remember he zapped me, right...?// "Oh, come'on Persies, what's the ol' sayin', let begones be begones?~" "Caaaaaw..." As Jaxus spoke, Persies only let out a sound that emanated a groan, if birds could. Not to mention he and Persies may have died before that point, had Bones not accompanied the faithful mission where Persies hatched. Remembering his old conversation with Bones over two years ago, Jaxus merely shrugged, lowering both arms slightly from the back of his head, open palms facing upwards, only smiling while gently shaking his head, eyes closed in a relaxed expression. Though perhaps one would stereotype light mages as overly zealous, to which Jaxus was to an extent, his stance on dark guilds seemed very...lax. Reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pack of cigarettes, Jaxus listened to Leonidas in an attentive manner, nodding his head briefly as they explained their age, bringing the stick of tobacco to their lips. "W-Wait, really?!" As Leonidas then further explained he did see some foot prints near the back of the forest, Jaxus entire body twitched, sending his cigarette into the air. "Woahwoahwoah!" Quickly fumbling for his cigarette, bouncing it off his hands afew times, Jaxus finally managed to catch it, letting out a brief, long sigh of relief, before tucking it into his mouth. Looking back to Leonidas, and noting they were taking their leave already towards the area, Jaxus kicked into a minor sprint, the tip of his cigarette lighting as a twinkle shined in his eyes. "Oy, oy, wait up.~" After making a quick job to catch up, slowing back down to Leonidas' speed, Jaxus chuckled with a smile, giving a brief nod. "Ey, by the way, I noted' yer' hands look bit' injured, I ain't'a doc, but I do kinda' have a bar. If yer' older than ya' look, we could have'a few drinks after this is done, might help with the pain bit.~ Eheheh.~" "Caw-Caaw-Caw-Caw-Caaw." //Jaxus, seriously, focus.// "Aye, guess yer' right Persies. Mission first, then booze.~" Taking a deep drag of his cigarette, Jaxus reached into his coat, pulling out a small, silver flask, taking a afew swigs down. "Caaaaaaw..." Again, all Persies could do is let out the closest sound she could to a groan. She dearly loved Jaxus like a brother, but his irresponsibility and overly laid back attitude always managed to get on her nerves none the less. "Want some?~" With that, Jaxus would offer the flask with his right hand to Leonidas, taking another drag off of his cigarette. Edited by SilverRush, May 14 2017, 04:02 AM.

Realizing that the gray-haired mage had not yet caught up to Leonidas, he paused for a moment, contemplating what him and his falcon had mentioned about Tartaros. It was not the guild itself the blonde-haired man thought about, he didn't really care for that lot although he once could have fit into such a faction. Nay, it was the twos' reaction that piqued his interest. Maybe Persies' thoughts differentiated, but Jaxus seemed rather nonchalant about the idea of dark guilds. That was probably a good thing for Leonidas, for even though he could be a decent and even good person at times, the matter was that he could not deny what he was. Not everything in the world could be altered. Continuing forward once the duo caught up, thoroughly amused by the light mage's struggle to hold onto his cigarette, the crimson-eyed man held up his left hand for a brief moment as Jaxus mentioned it. There was certainly a dull, throbbing pulse traveling up his arms, but the pain was nothing compared to what he had experienced before. The stark contrast between his skin and blood, deeper then one would expect, only served as proof that his existence lay in darkness, or at least halfway so. An ever brief whisper of melancholy escaped his lips, his arm abruptly dropping with it. Both actions, however true to himself they were, were shaded by a small grin and laugh as the gray-haired teenager brought up the concept of drinking after work was finished, but then proceeded to break such a rule. The smile on his face only turned larger as Jaxus offered him some of the flask he had been drinking from. "Sure," Leonidas replied. Whether or not he cared to admit it, the blonde-haired man was to some extent an alcoholic, although most certainly a sober one. Taking the offered flask, he swallowed a small portion of the liquid inside, handing it back after although still relishing the taste. "That's some good scotch you have there." For him, the knockback of the drink was absent, but it was enjoyable nevertheless. They had children to find, so perhaps the fact that the crimson-eyed man was nearly impossible to get drunk was a good thing. Usually it was more then a pain, though. |

"Eheheh.~ Thanks, I try ta' carry the best when travelin'.~ Never know who yer' gonna' meet after all.~" Persies merely rolled her eyes as Leonidas accepted the flask before handing it back to Jaxus, shaking her head all the while. Yet and still, she couldn't really control Jaxus even if she wanted to, and she kind of doubted anyone could. That easy going, irresponsible side probably would never entirely fade from Jaxus, no matter how many years. After all, he managed to keep it after the horrors of war. "Ey?!~" As the duo, or rather, trio delved further into the forests edges, Jaxus' eyes shined with a sparkle, a whimsical smile crossing his face as the group came across the very tracks Leonidas mentioned. Small tracks, but numerous, and very close in sync. Either an eight legged creature wearing human shoes walked through here, or more likely, the four missing children he was looking for. "Oi, oi, ya' were' right, this looks like the trail.~ Come'on, let's get goin', I bet those kids are waitin' for us.~" Looking to Leonidas with a grin and a nod, Jaxus hopped up in a step before landing and kicking off the ground into a light jog, not attempting to leave Leonidas behind, but still fast enough to scout up ahead as fast as he could without getting separated. "Wait, wait, what?!" After abit of a trek, Jaxus came to a screeching halt, leaping up and slamming his heels into the dirt, lowering his center of gravity as he slid afew feet through the soil, his head rearing back and emerald eyes widening in equal parts surprise, and shock. After breaking from the clearing of the brush, Jaxus stared upwards, back tall, finding not a house, but a "mansion" made entirely of confectionery delights! An entire walkway of gingerbread leading to the front door, massive fountains of liquid chocolate lining both sides of the estate, and even trees entirely made of candy! Yet the house itself was made of a mixture of marble chocolate, windows of dark chocolate decorated by gummy candies lining the walls, while the roof consisted entirely of cake, frosting, and caramel drizzle! In most circumstances, regardless of the missing kids, this alone would stick out but what made it stick out further for Jaxus was the location they found it at, staring at it with a dopey, confused expression long enough presumably for Leonidas to catch up. "This....This...reeaaaaalllly shouldn't be here..." "Ca-Caw-Caaw-Caw?" //Gee, ya' think?// "Not like that Persies, I heard'a bout'a witch in the forest from the guild with a candy house, but this ain't'a house, and this ain't where I heard it was." Jaxus placed his right palm over his face, brushing his hair aside to the left, taking a deep, long breath. Most likely, the culprit was a newcomer to the forest, and that meant their abilities and level of threat were unknown. "Well, guess we should go introduce ourselves, ey, Leo?~" Slamming his right fist into his open left palm, eyes directing themselves towards Leonidas, abit of a smile Jaxus crossed his face, probably making it obvious to Leonidas how Jaxus intended "introductions" to go if the culprit refused to return Ms. Grimm's children. "Caaa-Caaaw..." //Please no...// Of course, considering how long they traveled together, Persies was against the idea, knowing of Jaxus' habit to go overboard all too well. Out of the corner of his eye, Leonidas saw the falcon's negative reactions towards his and Jaxus's exchange. Turning for an instant towards her, the blonde-haired man smiled for a split second before refocusing on the trees ahead. Soon after, the three came across the tracks he had previously mentioned. They were embedded in dried mud, evidence that the four children had to have arrived at the very least the day before for the sun to preserve their footprints. The light mage proclaimed the news, taking off soon after. Before then, Leonidas nodded back, then started to run behind Jaxus at a slower pace. Just one of the disadvantages of being short. He shook his head for a second, mostly to himself. Having tailed him, Leonidas saw as Jaxus suddenly halted, a gauge of his skill if their ever was one. Slowing down in a less dramatic matter, the crimson-eyed man gagged as he took in the sight before the three. It couldn't have been a pit of bones, or a black abyss, or even a waterfall of blood. It had to be a mansion made of candy. If there was one type of food he couldn't stand, it was sweets. Whoever had decided it was a good idea to compress way too much sugar into a small area and then give it to small children must have been a complete idiot. And for the rest of the world that somehow decided candy was the most wonderful thing in the world, he just didn't understand. Maybe it was a human thing. No, it was probably just him. "That is way too much sugar," Leonidas muttered, shortly after the other mage's exclamation. Truthfully, the only thing that looked even remotely decent was the dark chocolate that made up the windows of the disgusting contraption. Even then, that only went decently well with coffee, and nothing else. A disapproving look was all that showed, however, as Jaxus explained that he had never seen or heard of such a place before. The fact that there was presumably another candy house in Lavender Forest, that was downright nausea-inducing. The blonde-haired man grinned at the light mage's notion followed by an aggressive motion that told all he needed to know about Jaxus's intentions. Leonidas certainly wanted nothing more then to wreck the abomination before him, but diplomacy, no matter how much he hated it, was probably a better option considering the trio knew essentially nothing about what they were about to walk into. "Well, let's see if the children are in here first. For all we know, the place could be abandoned. I'll go up there and knock, but if things go south you two can cover me, right?" Leonidas asked, already heading towards the mansion. As he stepped onto the gingerbread walkway, he looked down, mildly surprised that the path didn't seem to crumble in the slightest. He didn't weigh much compared to a lot of other people, that was a given, but still he wasn't that light. More likely, the gingerbread was enhanced, or perhaps even created, by magic. Focusing back onto the house, the blonde-haired man played a childish look on his face. Inwardly, his repugnance only increased. |
