There was a spring in Vivian's step on that day. Holding something close to her chest up against her shirt the woman hummed to herself as she practically skipped down the road. Finally, after so many weeks of waiting, she had finally found it. Her precious little ghost. Sure it had cost her more than she should have paid for it, but the money spent here and all the time she would have to invest into caring for it was well and truly worth it. Caring after this little life was something she had been desperately craving for a long time. There were still a few things that she still needed to purchase before she could head home, like actual food for herself. And taking two trips was for the weak. Cradling her bundle as she picked out select veggies as her whim dictated she paid for it with one hand, the other precariously trying to hold everything at once. As she was about to struggle with the door she found it held open for her from the other side. Smiling in thanks she shuffled past the man and headed down the road towards her home only to find him starting to follow her from a short distance. Under normal circumstances Vivian would have been amused by this. Perhaps even played along until it became boring. Right now though there were far more pressing matters for her to attend to, and she was very much not in the mood to deal with... whatever this was. Stopping about halfway home she turned around and faced him. "Is there something I can do for you?" Trying to come off as polite her impatience shone through anyway in her stance and tone. With an awkward laugh he stepped closer as he rubbed the back of his neck with one hand. "I don't know, I was hoping I could maybe help you carry those things? You shouldn't have to carry them all." Wonderful. If this was his attempt at being nice it really wasn't working, the creep factor was just a little too much to get over. Perhaps creep was too harsh of her, he seemed genuinely interested in helping. Just this wasn't the way to go about it. "I've got this, but that's sweet of you. Besides, this little one is too precious for me to let anyone else touch. No offence." Her continual rejection and the fact that it was starting to draw a small crowd left him turning red. What he had hoped would be a good way to get in her good books was now making him come across as an overly obsessed suitor, and something short circuited in his mind making him think it was a good idea to bluster instead of just backing off. "What, that? It's just a stupid plant." The result was instantaneous, her facade of politeness crumbling instantly as she started seeing red. "You did not. Just call. My Dendrophylax lindenii. A stupid. Plant." The anger in her voice preventing her from speaking normally as she glared daggers at the man. Were it not for her precious cargo occupying both her hands she would have planted actual daggers in him at that point, which was probably for the best if she didn't want to get arrested. Even with that in consideration this was about to get very ugly very quickly. Spoiler: click to toggle

Within a steamy bathing room in some apartment situated in the quiet-side of Magnolia, a young Stellar Spirit mage resided within a torrid pool of water, relaxing her aching muscles from strenuous job-seeking. Luckily for this pink-haired woman, she managed to find just the job -- even if it exhausted her beyond belief. Who knew that cleaning an entire mansion would practically be the equivalent of fighting a high-ranking mage? Perhaps I'm exaggerating, she thought. But that was certainly quite the challenge. Even though I managed to make my rent and the Jewels to support my kind of lavish lifestyle and apartment, I need to make better choices. Exhaling build-up in her lungs, Mallorie settled further into the tub and looked up at the convenient sky-light in her bathroom. Night-time baths were only worth it because she managed to look at the night-sky whenever she did so. The stars were portals, she believed, to the spirit world. She wondered if she would ever be capable of reaching it, although she did read that was impossible. The Stellar Spirit king didn't recognize just anyone, and a human couldn't breathe within that world anyway. After all, Mallorie was yet to be anyone. Perhaps someday, though. . . This was one of her goals, aside from others, that much is certain. "Maybe I'll go for a bit of a walk tomorrow morning. . . But I really need to sleep." With that, Mallorie moved herself from the tub, got dressed, brushed and dried her hair, and headed into her bed. Her muscles were now soothed and relaxed, and she certainly wouldn't awaken stiff and languid. Breathing heavenly, sleep soon washed over her. It wasn't long before the moon cycled through the sky to the edge of the world, and the scintillating brilliance of the sun was evoked by the cosmic ordinance of the world. It was golden and magical. Mallorie was now gazing at the sun as she brushed her hair, through a window in her apartment, of course. After waking up and getting dressed, Mallorie grabbed her Stellar Spirit gate key and nodded to herself. "Okay, today is another day full of work. I need to make sure I get enough money to keep going." Someday, Mallorie believed, Jewels would come easier to her. She'll be going on dangerous, high-ranking missions and will be capable of funding her apartment and her life in full. That worry would be liquidated, and then she could continue pursuing her other aspirations as well. The morning felt amazing on her skin, the crisp air not too cool nor too warm. A river stream nearby glistened as the cascading lights of the sun glinted on and off, the small waves of the calm body of water soothing her soul. It felt more like a day off than anything, but she couldn't afford such days; after all, if she allowed herself to slip just for one day, she'll be homeless by the next month. Her rent was ridiculous due to all the amenities she benefited from, including the area. Rounding the corner, Mallorie soon noticed a potential commotion. The situation was tense and made her skin prickle, the woman and the man clearly at odds. In fact, the woman seemed to be the one making the situation somewhat clammy, and Mallorie couldn't help but take a few steps forward, timidly raising her hands and putting up a wavering smile. "Uhm. . . So, is there something going on here?" She dared to ask, her eyes cycling between Vivian and the strange man, whom for some reason, Mallorie didn't immediately trust. Something's odd. . . |

Before something potentially life changing could happen (for both of them in very different ways) an onlooker stepped in and started to make themselves involved. This day... could it get any worse? Wait no I don't want to know. Vivian sighed as she felt a headache coming on. There had to be some way out of this predicament that didn't involve stabbing everyone present. First off she wasn't physically capable of pulling it off and secondly she didn't really have it in her to hurt anyone under that pretext in the first place. Being a nuisance might be worthy of getting glared at but if she stopped to think about it she wouldn't ever actually hurt the guy over it. No, her real issue was that the ghost orchid was a very sensitive plant that usually didn't survive getting transplanted unless the utmost care was used. That was why no one but her was going to go anywhere near it and she was so stressed out, not because someone felt entitled to her company because they were seemingly being nice. That she couldn't care less about. What she really needed was some way she could just go on her way with minimal fuss so she could get to work. Vivian's eyes lit up suddenly as if she just realised something while looking at Mallorie. Stepping closer to the new girl she started talking her in a highly animated fashion. "Erika! I almost didn't recognise you with that new hairstyle, how's it going? Been too long, let's walk and talk. I gotta get this 'stupid plant' back home before it dies on me." With her back to the stranger she gave Mallorie a look that clearly said "get me out of here" and could only hope that her gambit paid off. At least this girl probably didn't care at all about her beyond this immediate situation and wouldn't be trying to make advances on her once she got home. Unless she did. Vivian tried to not think about the world where there were now two issues instead of just the one. With any luck she would be able to subtly point Mallorie in the right direction and get them both moving that way. Thank the gods, she muttered mostly to herself but also for Mallorie's benefit. Letting out a sigh of relief she finally smiled. "Sorry about that 'Erika'. I just really needed to get away as fast as possible, wasn't kidding when I said this little guy needs to get home soon. My name's Vivian, I'd shake your hand but I'm afraid I don't have one to spare at the moment. I know it's an inconvenience but could I bother you to walk me the rest of the way home? I'm close by, just don't want the guy circling around or something." Edited by Albacorbis, Apr 18 2017, 11:55 PM.

Drawing up how the situation could transpire whether or not Mallorie remained, she began to wonder if things were going to get genuinely serious. Onlookers were wondering what was happening, and Mallorie was just praying that someone wasn't going to get hurt. She still couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off about the guy that was in their presence. From what she could understand, he seemed -- from what Mallorie could deduce -- to wish to help Vivian with everything she's laden with. Or, perhaps, he was simply hitting on the young woman. No doubt Vivian harbored great pulchritude -- but nonetheless, things were getting more and more tense. Why did I even get involved in this? What if things explode? I wouldn't want to use magic in the middle of town. . . Mallorie thought, her countenance becoming profound and somewhat worried. It was in that moment that the mysterious young woman soon began to regard Mallorie with a certain familiarity that Mallorie never had dealt with. She had met plenty of people in passing, but none of them have ever approached her like now. Caught off-guard and slightly astounded, Vivian began to call Mallorie by a different name -- Erika, was it? --, and even began to comment on how she didn't recognize her with her new haircut. Could it be that Mallorie looked like someone that Vivian had known? Could it be that Mallorie had a doppleganger she didn't know of? Well, that was entirely possible. . . All these thoughts reeled and circled in Mallorie's mind, and she was heavily perplexed. She even did so much as step back a slight amount, but not entirely so. Her surprise was evident in her face, though. Then, Vivian's look told Mallorie everything. She was just trying to get away. . . Mallorie, thought, nodding slowly and looking to the plant in Vivian's hand. Flicking her gaze to the mysterious man that was only bothering Vivian a few seconds ago, Mallorie agreed to being dragged away by Vivian far off -- for the sake of everything. A while later, and Vivian was already explaining everything and introducing herself. "You really surprised me. . ." Mallorie breathed in relief, looking to the plant that Vivian held in her hand again. Looking to Vivian now, as the woman requested a favor, Mallorie placed her wrist on her hip, arms akimbo. Nodding slowly, with one brow raised, Mallorie agreed. "Sure. . . But, well, my name's not Erika, it's Mallorie. . . But, then again, you knew that." She acquiesced, chuckling at that. "I suppose it'd be safest this way, anyway. . . I don't know why, but something was odd about that guy," Mallorie cared to mention, pensively so. |

Laughing softly Vivian did her best not to jiggle her precious cargo too much. "If you think you were surprised try being me and getting followed around. If I didn't know any better I'd say he was after my precious booty." She looked meaningfully at the plant she was carrying with an innocent smile. "What? He might be a pirate." As they kept walking Vivian looked up at the clear sky with a serious expression. "But seriously, thank you. I know what you mean by something seeming odd with that guy, I really don't know what his problem was. They can usually take a hint." Hefting her bag of supplies slightly higher from where it started to slip she shrugged. "Well whatever it was about, it's over now." Getting close to the apartments she called home she nodded at them when they came in sight. "Here we are, home sweet home. Well, for the next month or two at least." Looking at Mallorie sheepishly she smiled again. "Hey, can I get your help with the doors? If you come inside I can get you something to eat or drink as thanks for earlier. This guy comes first though if that's ok?" Vivian wasn't the type to let a good deed go unnoticed and felt bad for having used this girl to her own ends, even if it wasn't likely that big of a deal. Her place was a smallish apartment with a single bedroom and whatever amenities she had immediate need for. It would be readily apparent that it was not a place she meant to keep as a permanent home as there was surprisingly very little filling it. Carefully placing her plant next to a terrarium she got her groceries out and put them on the table before turning back to Mallorie. "Alright sweetheart, you tell me what you want and I'll see what I can do about it." |

As the two young women walked, Mallorie paid special attention to the kind of person Vivian was. She seemed to be the kind of person that was free-spirited, hearted, and enjoyed quite the jaspery. When Mallorie mentioned the guy being rather strange and disconcerting to the young Stellar Spirit mage, Vivian proceeded with a crass joke about him wanting her booty -- only to add that he could've been a pirate. To this, Mallorie couldn't help but chuckle-giggle. After all, it was a funny joke and it really broke the ice. Mallorie wasn't unknown to guys wishing to hit on women due to their assets. Although Vivian was right -- most of the time, they did get the hint. Just why was he following her? It's so strange. . . I wonder who that guy was? It's so creepy. "It's really not a problem. I'm sure I would've liked the same help if I was in your situation," Mallorie mentioned. "Still, he was creepy. Maybe he actually was trying to mug you? There really isn't any other reason why some random guy would start following you in daylight. . . I know I wouldn't like it if someone followed me, that's for sure," Shivering at the thought, Mallorie tried very hard to just knock the entire situation out of her head. She didn't need to think about it anymore. Everything was fine now, and Mallorie perhaps made a new friend! No way she was going to meet that guy again, right? After all, there wouldn't be any reason to. If anything, Mallorie would call upon Serpens to paralyze his leg or something if he did come after them -- just enough time to get away. Hopefully none of that happens, she thought. As they arrived to Vivian's apartment, Mallorie nodded at her request in wishing assistance with the door. Abetting her promptly, she held the door open for Vivian to head inside, and Mallorie followed suit. With any manual locks available, she locked the door behind her and followed Vivian in. Her apartment's pretty nice. . . Even if a little empty Mallorie internalized. She has everything she needs, even a terrarium! She must really enjoy botany. . . Or flowers. Very interesting characteristic. . . Once Vivian had settled down, she offered Mallorie whatever it is she wanted. Quirking a brow, she wondered about that. Perhaps Vivian was speaking about food or a drink? Well, it would be rude to pass on the offer. "Tea is fine," She decided, although not wondering if she sounded insensitive by requesting it. After all, Vivian seemed to harbor some kind of love for plants. Maybe she was a nature mage? Or perhaps not a mage at all. . . Mallorie wasn't sure. "If I'm being honest, though, I'm looking for paying work. I need to make sure I stay on the ball of my bills. . . And anything I can do to practice my magic and get stronger all around." |

Doing her best to ignore the scene from earlier Vivian busied herself making sure that her plant was well after it's trip before turning her attention back to her guest. Tea eh? Thank the gods she had asked for something she actually had. Pulling out a wooden box with a latch lid she placed it on the table and opened it for Mal to inspect. "I'll get some water boiling, take your pick. The ones in the obviously purchased sachets are, well, from the store. If you're feeling adventurous the ones in the purple silk pouches I helped grow. Well, I did some volunteer farm work and the farmers paid me with the 'fruit' of my labour so to speak. They're all marked with what they are of course." Setting the water up to boil Vivian turned her attention back to her precious seedling. Carefully uncovering the terrarium she smiled up at Mal, a childlike wonder in her eyes at what she was about to do. "D'you wanna see?" Working quickly she transplanted the plant into it's new home, carefully adding in water from a special container as she explained in a hushed tone similar to one trying not to wake a baby. "She's very particular about her needs, tap water will kill her slowly. Too much crap in there for her. Lots of humidity and..." closing the lid to the terrarium she beamed up at Mal again. "Stagnant air. That there is a happy plant." Returning to the kitchen Vivian came out with the kettle and two cups, as well as milk and sugar. Setting one cup down for Mal she motioned for her to take her choice of the teas and then set about making the necessary preparations. Both the sachets and the silk pouches contained not tea bags but just the leaves, making it a more traditional style of making tea. As she waited for that to finish Vivian paused her whirlwind of activity to chat with Mallorie about what it was that she was looking for. "Paying work is everywhere dear, you just have to know where to look for it. And dare I say it, be willing to work it." She smiled to show she meant no disrespect before elaborating further. "Those farmers I did some work for? They still show up from time to time, bring me groceries at no cost. My skillset and I'm doing the work of a farmhand? I could have turned up my nose, no one would have batted an eye. And I'll tell you a little secret, a lot of it is less about what you know but who you know." Looking at Mal Vivian felt a little bit... old. Not in a bad way, but rather like a mother. Gods, her as a mother. The horror. "You've obviously worked here and there to be where you are now. If you're looking for work and you did a good job before, find those people who know you. Maybe they don't have work, but someone else they know might. Let your assets work for you." Picking up the pot of now prepared tea she moved over and began pouring for Mallorie first and then herself. "Besides, who said you don't have any work?" Preparing her tea with precise movements as she measured out the exact amount of sugar she wanted she began to stir slowly. "If you'll take it I'll need someone to help look after little ghosty from time to time." |

Settling herself into a nearby chair, Mallorie awaited for Vivian to do what she must. Luckily, the potentially phyto-kinetic mage didn't seemed offended by Mallorie's want for tea, and even offered her a selection. Nodding, she choose a certain satchet and allowed Vivian to do what she needed to do. Afterwards, Vivian seemed to take care of her plant, which Mallorie sought to observe. Although Mallorie wasn't the kind of person to be particularly inclined to flora, Vivian's love and predilection for plants made Mallorie want to observe. Following Vivian's movements with her eyes, she learned the necessary steps of taking care of the ghost plant. Smiling lightly as Vivian brought forth the tea, Mallorie made careful work of setting it up. Placing in plenty of sugar, she began to take a sip and was heavily delighted. "This is good," Mallorie complimented, emulating Vivian's own beaming smile when she was slowly instructing Mallorie on the basis of taking care of 'her little ghosty'. Then they spoke about potential jobs, and Vivian recited an age-old lecture that Mallorie had received plenty of times in the past: that paying work was everywhere, although perhaps Mallorie should have been a little bit more specific. "You're right about that. The odd jobs I have done can be repeated, and they didn't pay too badly, but. . ." Looking into the reflection of her sweet tea, Mallorie sighed. "I think, perhaps. . . I'd need something more akin for a mage," She admitted. Then, she unclipped her Stellar Spirit key from the bangle on her wrist. "I'm a Stellar Spirit mage, and I have a goal to collect as many keys as I can get my hands on," Mallorie explained. "But, I'm also still a mage. And as a mage, I should be doing more than just odd jobs. Don't you agree?" She questioned Vivian, as if trying to relate to the woman who seemed to began to dote on her like a mother. "It's a little complicated but. . . It's what I feel I should be doing. I should be helping people and getting stronger, I suppose. . ." At this point, Mallorie had no idea what she was talking about. She was just spouting whatever came into her mind at this point. "But, sure. I wouldn't mind taking care of your plant when you can't. Now that I know what to do, there's no way I could screw it up." She answered, confidently. I hope. Edited by Ana and the Rhombi, Apr 19 2017, 03:21 AM.

As she sipped her tea Vivian wondered if she wasn't being a little bit too forward, after all it wasn't really her place to be giving advice like this. She smiled and gave a soft 'thank you' in response to the compliment. It came as some relief when Mallorie seemed to be genuinely receptive rather than offended, after all that was the last thing Vivian wanted to do. As Mal presented her case Vivian had to admit that she could see her side of things. After all she too was a mage and a part of her was always looking for ways to improve on that magic. It was like any skill, use it or lose it. The difference was that she always found ways to incorporate her magic into whatever she was doing. Caring for her plants, that extra attention to details her magic afforded her came in very handy. Working as a soldier for hire... well it came in quite handy there too. "Work worthy of a mage? Well sure you could look at it that way, but doesn't that create a disconnect with the people around you?" Vivian paused for a moment as if weighting her next words carefully. "Let's say you're a powerful mage, able to rise or wipe cities from existence on a whim. 'I'm the most powerful mage to have ever lived' you tell yourself, and you're right. 'The most powerful mages should only deal with the most serious of issues' you say, and so in arrogance ignore all the little things you could be doing. No one else could ever hope to do as many little things as you because you are the powerful mage, but because they're beneath you the normal people have to struggle without you to help them. You wait and wait for something worth your time and waste that time, not to mention your talent, by doing nothing. Not saying that's you dear, that's only an example." She shrugged, looking apologetic. "I don't mean to lecture, just giving my opinion. The powerful should always pray that they are never truly needed. I for one would be perfectly content if all magic was a matter of convenience and not need. So then," she leaned forward with conspiratorial air around her. "Two intelligent ladies present here. I think we can brainstorm up a few ideas on how to train your magic without there needing to be a big fuss. There's just one thing... what's a stellar spirit exactly? And uh, that bit about keys too. What's that about?" Vivian had never heard of them, or if she had she had forgotten in the meantime. Just another thing to add to the seemingly endless list of unknowns in her life. She was just glad that she had someone to have a pleasant chat with over tea and that her plant's continued care seemed almost assured. |

Things were going rather well as the two got to know each other a bit more. It was certainly an interesting and enlightening conversation, that was certain. Mallorie never anticipated much from Vivian, aside from the accidental coincidence of their meeting. It was all very sudden and random; or perhaps, it was fate? Maybe the Stellar Spirits had something in mind for Mallorie? Perhaps Vivian was here as some sort of advancement for Mallorie, and not just a sudden stop. Mallorie wasn't sure, and when she finished explaining her side of things, Vivian began to give her input. Mallorie wasn't offended or felt it was unprecedented. She was still a puerile youth, still growing, and not all of her ideas and expectations were mature. A lot of people tend to forget that she was still sixteen, and not much older. They often forget because of all that she knows, and all that she practices, and certain outlooks in life that she harbors. However, Vivian was different; she saw her for the young woman Mallorie was. Although not admonishing or condescending, Vivian saw Mallorie as someone she could guide, and not necessarily baby. Mallorie appreciated this, and this was evident in her veneer. While Vivian continued her lecture, Mallorie really thought about what Vivian had to say. She's right, Mallorie thought. If I just deferred myself to just work that challenged me, I'd become entirely disconnected from everyone. It would all get to my head, eventually. I'm a person, after all. I don't have to just wait for something worth my time and power come to me; I just have to look for it. And if I have to do menial tasks and things that are tedious, and might not necessarily grow my magic power, then so be it. After all, if I didn't do those things, I wouldn't grow as a person. . . I have a lot more growing to do as a person than a wizard before anything. Furrowing her brow, perhaps this sudden shift in her face might insinuate that Mallorie was offended. Instead, though, it soon melted into a thankful countenance, her eyes glinting with such a vibe. "I'm really glad we bumped into each other," She began. "You're right. I have to be willing to do whatever is necessary. I can't just coop myself up to doing things I think will get me somewhere, when every little step will get me to my goal anyway." Chuckling at that, Mallorie was glad she came to this realization. Certainly, Vivian wasn't just there. She was there for a reason. All the while, Vivian hadn't a clue what Stellar Spirits were! This made Mallorie blink a few times in shock, but shook her head, giggling. "I'll show you," She said, grabbing hold of her Silver Gate Key, shaped like a serpent, and waving it in front of her. "Open! Gate of the Serpent, Serpens!" A ringing resounded in the room as a green-brown magic circle whirled to life, a glistering glow enveloping the room. A puff of smoke later, and a young girl with green eyes, a bob-cut, and a pale complexion suddenly appeared. She was certainly something other than humanoid. "Who must I impale, de-arimasu?" Serpens questioned, her spear at the ready. "No one, Serpens," Mallorie replied, nervously. Turning to Vivian, Mallorie began to explain. "Stellar Spirits are beings from the celestial spirit world -- an entire universe parallel to ours. They're special beings that could be anything, and adapt to the form of the contractor -- which would be anyone who has a key like this," Mallorie pointed out, showing off Serpens' key. "They're really special, and super useful, too. A contract needs to be made between mage and spirit, but it usually works out. . . There's a lot more to explain, too," Mallorie trailed off. |
