"Sweet," Lilith said through the comm. She rested her chin on her right palm, lowering her guard bit by bit as the river came into focus. Lilith carefully unboarded the wagon as it rolled into the docks, watching as workers shuffled over to unload the caravan. They were taking the metal, which was bundled with rope and packaged, to a ship nearby. It was big, and Lilith assumed other stuff besides the metal would be loaded onto it. Others went to do paperwork, Lilith catching a glimpse of Mr. Haussuar signing something. She didn't have the chance to approach him, however, as Beryl walked up and asked Lilith if she was doing alright. "Oh yeah, I'm fine. I might just need some ice," she replied. Okay, maybe that wasn't entirely true, as she saw her forearm swelling up where she had been shot. That bruise was probably going to be there for a while. As far as her back went, that pain would probably fade after a bit. Hey, at least Beryl didn't look hurt at all. In fact, she looked almost exactly the same as she had when they had boarded the wagon in the first place. She could only assume that Beryl was a lot more experienced in these things than her. Soon after, Derick Haussuar walked up to Beryl and Lilith. "Well done, you two. That was faster than I expected," he stated. Lilith said nothing. "Here's your payment," he continued, holding out two small bags filled with money. "Thank you," the mage said, taking the bag but not bothering to look inside. She trusted Derick enough to not assume that he was ripping the two off. He then walked off, with a stride in his step, to inspect the two wagons and talk to the drivers. After he was gone, Lilith slid the bag into her pocket, and fixed her eyes on the river. Maybe Dandelion could get better after all. It seemed that at least some stuff was legitimate. |

So far, Lilith stated that she was alright, although she seemed to be interested in a cold compress or something similar. Beryl noted her swollen arm and suspected that to be the reason for the desire for ice. It seemed that the other girl's brush with the bandits on the road had left its marks on her; Beryl, for her own part, was largely unspoiled because she was, as fate would have it, a slice above the regular Jane on the street. Beryl noticed Mr. Haussuar moving around, busy as a bee. He had most definitely used a quicker transport and taken another route. A part of Beryl was mildly irritated at the thought of the fact that his journey had been easy while theirs had not been, and all because he was richer than they. But thinking too much like that would make Beryl interested in becoming a common thief, and she wasn't sure she wanted to be known as such. Soon enough, the man came over, handing the two girls small bags full of money, while commenting that the job had been quicker than he'd thought it would be. "Lucky us," the Seveni girl said brightly, taking the bag offered her, and not checking its contents, seeing that her partner hadn't done so. She sure as hell would check once she was alone, and Mr. Haussuar would best be an honest fellow, for his own good. "Nice doing business with you." The extra money was rather welcome, and Beryl had already mentally spent half of it, when she saw Lilith looking at the river. She seemed like a nice person, if quiet, and Beryl was in the socializing mood, so the Seveni girl decided to take the incentive. Reaching out and using her Conflict of the Flesh, she gently touched the other girl's swollen forearm, healing it. True, there were some people with issues who would take offense at not being asked before help was rendered, but Lilith didn't seem like the sort. "Well, today doesn't seem like a day to mope around," she said to the blue-eyed girl. "What do you say to us looking for something cold and sweet? Bill's on the house." |

Lilith, much like Beryl had predicted, didn't move as the girl touched the red blot on her arm, instead relishing the relief that Beryl's healing spell brought. "Thanks," Lilith stated. If only her magic could do something as useful as healing others. In the state it was in right now, she couldn't do anything useful. The idea of Beryl paying for Lilith for them to go somewhere, well it didn't really bode too well in the mage's mind. Still, she didn't want to refuse a polite offer, after all that would be considered even more rude than accepting. "That sounds good to me," Lilith replied, with a hint of excitement, "so, do you know any good places to go?" Truthfully, while in Dandelion Lilith had never had the luxury of being able to eat, or drink, at restaurants. In fact in general the mage usually didn't have the money to afford anything other than the cheap establishments, even after leaving. She hoped that would start changing, however, as Lilith began to practice her magic again. If she got nowhere, well the mage wouldn't really be certain what to do with her life. |

If there was anything Beryl knew about places that had any military activity, it was that soldiers seemed to dislike cooking generally. They seemed to understand that they had more important things to do than sit around a boiling pot and determine how much the salt content in the food was. And so, it was very common to see establishments that focused on solving the human problem of hunger for the soldiers, close to their habitations. Adding to the fact that soldiers could be very... unpleasant when annoyed, most eateries in soldier-oriented places were at the very least decent. Even though this was Dandelion, the Toilet Rim of Fiore, Beryl was quite certain this would be the case as well. It seemed that the knights had jurisdiction in a few places, and left the other places to the mercy of the scum of the earth. Like a sort of deal: leave my space alone, and I leave yours. While Beryl wasn't too comfortable around anything that related to law enforcement, she was glad for their usefulness, if one had to find a decent place to eat, at least. "I'm not certain," the Seveni girl replied to Lilith's question about having a place in mind to go and eat. "At any rate, I'm sure such a place won't be so hard to find. Let's go." So saying, she took off at a leisurely pace, taking the direction from which she saw more civilians coming and going. That would likely lead to the market, or economic district (soldiers also seemed uninterested in traveling far to buy shit), in which the place to stuff one's face would most likely be. In time, they found a place; humble-looking but decent enough. Beryl walked in and found an empty table at which she sat. Soon a waiter came over and requested their orders. "Some dessert, refrigerated too," the Seveni girl replied. "If you have ice cream, I'm game," to which the waiter replied in the affirmative. "Brilliant. Chocolate, please." After waiting for Lilith to make her own order, Beryl asked her, "so, what brings you back to Dandelion?" she asked. Lilith had used the words 'lived in this city', so her living in Dandelion was past tense. "Unless I'm asking too personal questions, in which case you don't have to answer." |

Lilith followed Beryl through the streets of Dandelion, noting the increase in foot traffic as they went along. It seemed that the other girl was intent on taking Lilith to the commercial district of the city, which did make a lot of sense since Beryl apparently didn't know where she wanted to eat. Eventually the other mage settled on a rather small restaurant. Lilith thought the place looked rather cute, in actuality. It wasn't as bad as one would probably picture when they thought of restaurants in Dandelion. The mage followed Beryl into the shop, sitting down across from her. Before she had a chance to check the menu, a waiter came. If Beryl was going to have ice cream, Lilith decided that she would also get the cold dessert. "Could I have strawberry ice cream?" she asked the waiter, who nodded in return and wrote down their orders on a sheet of paper before walking away. Beryl's question was something that Lilith was actually asking herself at that point in time. Officially, she had only come to the city for a job, but something about the state of things begged the mage to stay longer. She wanted so desperately to change the half-dead city, but what could anyone do? Dandelion was literally built to be a criminal city, if Lilith recalled her history correctly. Most didn't choose to live in it, although it seemed that Beryl had something good going for her in it. "I came here for the job we just did, actually. That, and I figured it was about time to visit Dandelion again, see if anything has changed. What about you?" Beryl's occupation, aside from being a mage, was still a mystery to Lilith. Was she a resident of Dandelion? Was she a part of a guild? All these questions were things that she wanted to ask the other girl. Hopefully Beryl would answer some of them without her having to ask. |

Beryl smiled slightly, an expression of mild contemplation on her face, when Lilith gave her reasons for returning to Dandelion. In the Seveni girl's opinion, the latter reason was more cogent than the first. There was money to be made all over Fiore, and legitimate, safe money, for that matter. Unless Lilith was like Beryl, who in her own self-evaluation, had a pathological interest in danger, there were so many options much better than Dandelion in which one could attempt to gain employment. As it stood, the job just concluded wasn't even a full-time one. "Well, I don't think the question I asked you applies to me," the Earth mage said, pausing while the waiter returned with the desserts. Since there was a little extra money in the coffers today, Beryl favored the restaurant worker with a decent tip, and waited for the waiter to leave, before continuing her statement. "To clarify, I have made Dandelion my home, so for the most part, this sweet lovely corner of the universe is my base of operations." Beryl took a moment to taste her ice cream, and smiled again, more broadly this time, as the taste of the dessert proved satisfying. "Well, it's good to know there still some quality stuff in these parts," she intoned, taking a more relaxed position on her seat. "You did mention something along the lines of you growing up here, right? I guess that would make you a tad confused as to why someone without the general 'steal-or-be-stolen-from' mindset would hole up in such a place as this. Well, let's just say it's work quirks." Realizing that she would have to elucidate more to Lilith, as, in general, work in Dandelion meant stealing or cutting throats or selling dangerous crap, or a mixture of any two or all three occupations, Beryl continued, "Recently joined a guild, and no, it's so far from being a dark guild. I guess our Guild Master chose this city to set up his guild, because that's where he grew up, or so I have managed to glean. I'm sure you wouldn't have heard of the guild, seeing that it only recently came into existence, but it's called Nine Lives. Perhaps, in my opinion, that's the only thing that has changed since the inception of this city." Beryl fixed her green eyes on Lilith. "But lemme ask, have you seen anything that has changed?" |

As the waiter came around with the two girl's servings of ice cream, Lilith listened intently to Beryl explaining her current situation. Or perhaps current occupation was a better word for it. Whatever the case, as the other mage was speaking, Lilith took a bite out of the rose-colored food that was in front of her. She had to admit, it was some dang good ice cream. "Agreed," she stated in response to Beryl's remark about the taste of the ice cream, but then fell silent again as the girl continued. Indeed, the question that she posed had crossed Lilith's head, although unlike what the other mage probably thought she did know of other lines of work in Dandelion than the dishonest type. After all, thieves had to have something to steal, and that something never came out of nothing. At the mention of a guild, however, Lilith was truly intrigued. The first thing that came to the mage's mind was curiosity as Beryl mentioned that it was indeed not a dark guild. Whoever the person that founded this guild, Lilith had a sudden urge to meet him. Yet it seemed even a member of the association knew little to nothing about the man, so the mage doubted she ever would. Even if the guild master had grown up in the city, it was a risky move to place a guild, especially a non-dark one, in Dandelion. There were already so many gangs and the like, Lilith was beginning to wonder why the Magic Council would even accept it. The name was a bit ironic, the idea of having nine lives in this city of hopelessness. Perhaps whoever the founder was wanted to make things better. Based on Beryl's second to last statement, the mage could only assume that she had frequented Dandelion before joining Nine Lives. That probably explained to some extent why the woman knew a bit more than average about the state of things, or at least acted like she did. Still, much like Lilith, Beryl didn't hold the air that she had spent her entire life in the city. Especially when she asked her final question. "I'll be honest, at the present moment no, I haven't seen anything different," the mage answered, with a tinge of disappointed, "that being said, I haven't really been looking around. This restaurant's pretty nice, for example." Her last sentence was mostly thrown in to lighten the mood. To be honest, she didn't really like talking about Dandelion all too much. Lilith's urge to see the city change, well unlike her view on the rest of the world it was a passive thing. Perhaps it was because of her past experiences, but even with the idea of a guild in the place she still held little faith. |

In response to Beryl's question, Lilith had not answered with too many words. The Seveni girl surmised that the young woman enjoying a cold dessert with herself was something of an introvert. While Beryl herself preferred to do a little more listening on a good day, as far as conversations were concerned, she would have to engage herself as the more garrulous one today, so as not to find herself in the most awkward positions of uneasy silences. "Well, I'd say that nice things can crop up quite readily when there's enough money, and some order to prevent said money from escaping to undeserving hands," the Earth mage replied, before helping herself to more of her ice cream. "In any case, I think it's the presence of the knights here that allow for such an establishment s this to be here." Fact was, in the event that there was no law-enforcement agency close by, with enough power to keep the streets quiet, as was the norm in most of the rest of Dandelion, the holders of such establishments as diners and bars would have to turn to the gangs for protection, in order to keep themselves in business. Of course, they would also have to attempt to cater to the interests of their patron gangs, which would become a sizeable portion of their clientele, sometimes even becoming their exclusive patrons. And most riffraff seemed to favor consumables which messed up with their senses, and made them feel braver, and act stupider, than they already were. Somehow, ice cream wasn't much favored in that regard. Maybe that explained why such a joint as this could be found in one of the saner vestiges of the city. Stretching leisurely, as though with the understanding that the rest of the day was still free and waiting to be used, the Seveni girl turned her attention to Lilith and posed another question: "if I may be so curious as to inquire, just what exactly did you expect to find changed when you returned? It may sound a little obtuse, as far as questions go, but change could be based on so many different things, as varied as our faces." While Beryl expected Lilith's answer to have a moral adjective, the change which the blue-eyed girl sought for could be anything else, ranging from clearer weather to better food. |

Lilith took another bite of the fruity dessert in front of her, yet again savoring the taste. She enjoyed food such as ice cream, a sweet delicacy that she really couldn't imagine anyone not liking. Although maybe there were some people that had a distaste for the calories, or maybe the sugar. The mage realized that she ought to be more open-minded on such subjects. It was best not to get distracted by such thoughts, however, so Lilith turned her attention back to Beryl and caught the gist of what she was saying. Something told the mage that she should probably be taking a little more part in the conversation, seeing as it was only two-sided, so she interjected after the other girl's first statement. "That is one of the things about Dandelion that I've found interesting. Last time I was here, the Knights had almost no grip on this place. Now they do. It's kind of nice, having a part of the city that actually enforces laws. Some of the bigger gangs had rules and punishments in their sectors, but they were never fair." If one were to look closely, they might have seen in that moment Lilith's gaze dulling, as if she was recalling a different time. At that point, she was, one that happened to correspond pretty well with what the mage had just stated. She used to live under the influence of one of the bigger factions, and there was a time when she saw someone get caught for a petty crime. She never saw him again. On the other hand, a pair that would rob buildings all the time, they would never be punished. Such was the life in the wretched city. Yet again Lilith ended her thought process just as Beryl started speaking, at that moment realizing how vague she had been in her past statements. It was a bad habit of guarding her words. The truth was, she just loved to listen to others, and in some cases learn all their secrets. It was a bit like a game. "I don't know if expected would be the right word. I wanted things to be better, for crime to be lower, for people to be more kind. I guess the former has come to pass with all these knights around, but the latter, well look around, most people still seem dull. Or maybe it's just the contrast of Dandelion compared to other cities that's affecting my judgement," the girl stated. She didn't want to sound pessimistic, but she couldn't help herself. |

"Huh," Beryl said in response to Lilith's latest statement about things getting better as regarded crime becoming lower. In Beryl's opinion, nothing had changed much. The dullness, however, was more relative. The Seveni girl was of the opinion that the people of Dandelion weren't so dull as they appeared. Flash some money before any of their faces and be shocked at the transformation. And then, there were the 'bright-eyed' fellows who were 'stab first, take purse later'. They couldn't be labelled dull; snakes weren't known for being dull. "May I mention that I'm not impressed about the presence of the law in these parts," Beryl intoned, lowering her voice to a conspiratory level. "I could be wrong, but in my opinion, the lawmen are more or less just another gang, only that they're backed by the government." Of course, that mindset was rather flawed, but what Beryl knew about law enforcement was enough to make her averse to its officers. The Knights of Fiore who stood on battle lines and fought, those Beryl respected with every fiber of her being. The local city guard who did policing work were not so highly regarded, unfortunately. Most policemen she had seen were either the comfortable sort, watching over already lawful environments, or the corrupted kind, with all the taking bribes and oppressing folk and shady deals. "This area only appears lawful, probably because the Knights of Fiore have some presence here. The local city guard can be paid to look the other way, or even enforce the will of those who can pay. The docks are a really precious place to be, but Mr. Haussuar seems to have some clout, as it were," Beryl continued, pausing to eat some more ice cream. "I guess he must have informed the knights and paid the local guard to be as alert as possible, so their activity is concentrated at his end. And no doubt, he lubricated the hands of the top gang that runs the docks, so they're at their best behavior on his end today. The rest of the docks, which are rather expansive, if you must know, most likely are in a crapload of criminal activity as we speak, because, face it, the Knights are just too few to keep the whole place safe. And once Mr. Haussuar is done with his business, it's 'business as usual'." "I hope there'll be a change one day," Beryl said pensively, staring at some undefined spot outside the window. "But wishing doesn't bring about such a desired change. There'll have to be sacrifices, but who are willing to make them?" |
