Lilith sat quietly as the wagons started moving, her legs dangling off the edge of the vehicle outside of the harness that allowed the driver to steer the beasts. Within a moment's notice, the mage would be able to jump down and start fighting, which was one of the reasons that she chose the spot. She could also see both edges of the road and the buildings next to them, something which would be quite important if someone were to stage a frontal attack. Lilith had been thinking about the possible ways people could effectively steal something out of the caravan when the static crackling of the comm system jolted her to the present. She heard Beryl's message loud and clear, and thought to herself that she couldn't agree more. "Sounds good to me. I'm in the front. The space between the two wagons looks secure, although could you keep an eye on it second driver?" she said, pressing the button on the comm while talking to communicate her message. After a moment the second driver replied. "Alright, can do." After that, the ride went on pretty uneventfully, although Lilith did notice a few people on the streets eyeing the caravan. It wasn't anything to really point out, after all the mage herself would have probably turned to see the procession back when she lived in Dandelion. However, she did note that the caravan was very obvious, and perhaps would be even a bigger target than she originally thought. She had just noticed a particularly suspicious person on the right side of the caravan when the device she was holding sprung to life again. Hearing Beryl's message, and also knowing that the first driver was about to turn based on his movements, Lilith put the clues together and then realized what the assaultants were doing. "There's another person on the right side of the first wagon that I think is notable. We're about to turn, which leads me to believe the attackers are trying to cut off the second wagon from the first. I think we should take this turn slowly and try to get closer together. It might lead them to think we've caught onto their plans, however," Lilith said through the device, keeping her voice rather low. She didn't want to suggest stopping the caravan, as that would probably make it even more vulnerable, however Lilith had a feeling that something was about to happen. |

Beryl listened to Lilith's observations and advice, and saw little fault in them. With the heads-up she'd just received, she leaned to the right to peer out from her position behind the wagon to see the fellow Lilith had mentioned. True, as her fellow escort had mentioned, the man stuck out like a sore thumb for two major reasons: firstly, his positioning, which looked as though he was trying to stay concealed and at the same time look casual, and secondly, the fact that he always seemed to keep whispering into his sleeve, and throw furtive glances into the shadows around. "I strongly subscribe to your plan, Lilith," the Seveni girl said, keeping her low tone of voice, but appearing so comfortable with even a smile on her face, that the average observer would automatically assume that whatever she was saying into her comm was either a pleasantry or a joke. Of course, she gave no impression that she was aware of the hidden presence behind the convoy. "Unless there's a better plan, can we reduce the distance between the carriages? The bend we're about to negotiate looks somewhat narrow from my perspective, so let's keep the wagon beasts as close as possible to each other. I just hope the animal at the back isn't too bothered with the smell of its companions-- well, you know." She laughed heartily at that, to all the world appearing more as a passenger than an escort. But that was something she had learned about strategy: misdirection. Another thing, if played right, that could turn the tables against their would-be attackers, was forcing their hand to move too early, or too late. "Here's what I think: while our tightening of formation may let our friends in the shadows realize we're aware of them, we can use that to our advantage. After this choke point, there may not be other places enough in which to carry out another ambush safely, which is why they chose here, and are careful not to let us know they want to strike. But if they suspect we're aware of their plans, they may have to readjust their strategy, which I assume is separating the wagons, to blocking us and attacking as best they can, a less sound tactic, but one which they may be forced to use, if they are unable to divide us." Suddenly a stall by the side of the road collapsed, spilling wood, metal and other miscellaneous oddities onto the narrow street, blocking it reasonably. While the blockade would not be too hard to remove, getting the wagons past with them there would be a serious mistake, with the threat at hand. That would force the wagon riders to stop. "Well, that's a smart move," the Seveni girl muttered more to herself than anyone on the comm. Then she said into her device. "Seems like we're pinned down. Refuse attempts to lure you away from the caravans. Defensive maneuvers, everyone. Identify, and eliminate persons with likely leadership or influential statuses." A number of men began filtering out of the shadows. Beryl had no idea how many were before the convoy, but she could count three at the back, plus the guy at the right, making four people likely to attack the rear wagon. "Here they come," she stated, watching the approaching miscreants, her face looking frightened, which was actually a lie. She kept her eyes open for anyone giving commands or making signs. The guy on the right was a possibility, with all his signalling before the springing of the ambush, but then again, he could have just been a message conveyor. |

"Alright then, drivers do you think this is a good idea?" Lilith asked through the device in response to Beryl agreeing with her. Almost at the same time the drivers responded with a "Yes," through the comm. However, just before they were going to start the maneuver, a convenient roadblock, or at least a convenient one for the perpetrators, was created. It was an alarming development, to say the least, and it obviously meant that the attackers knew that the caravan was aware of their presence. Unless of course Lilith had miscalculated and this was a part of their plan from the very start. Actually, yeah that was probably the reason. In any case, the wagons would be forced to hault if nothing was done about the blockade, and from the looks of it the thing would take sometime to move out of at least half the road that way the caravan could get by. Beryl's voice came through the communications device, right after Lilith saw two people coming from the source of the blockade. "Will do. Two people are approaching the front wagon, coming from the roadblock's origins," she said, acting as if she was annoyed by the assortment of materials rather than observing the two figures that were swiftly approaching the front driver, as if they were trying to apologize. However, Lilith was quick to observe the switchblades on their belts, the kind standard workers wouldn't carry in plain sight. Their main flaw in the plan? They had approached the side of the wagon she had been sitting on, and it was quite easy for the mage to jump down from the vehicle, crossing her arms as she landed. "So, what's up?" Lilith asked the man and woman, as if she was engaging in casual conversation. The people, not exactly sure what to say, hesitated before attempting to attack, but in that moment the mage attacked, kicking the man in his... rather sensitive area and punching the woman in the face. It was obvious that they weren't experienced fighters, probably just hired by the real culprits. The man was down on the ground, writhing in pain, and the woman, half-stunned, grabbed the man's wrist and tried to get him to get up. Eventually she gave up and ran away, the man following her a little bit later. Lilith just shrugged, they had probably already done the work they were being paid for, and she had to admit if she had the job she would've been long gone by then. |

Things began getting more interesting. Lilith announced that there were two people approaching from before the wagon. "Noted. If Lilith can handle them, please might all hands not engaged see to clearing the road again? It shouldn't take much time," the Seveni girl whispered into her comm, looking to the approaching miscreants as though she was trying to radio for help. "Put that down missy," one of the villains, whose lower face was obscured by a kerchief, said, "and we'll try to be nice to you." Another of them snickered, as the Seveni girl obediently complied as if she was cowed by the rogues. The sound of Lilith taking care of her problem drew the attention of the four approaching the hind wagon just momentarily before there was the mild report of one of Beryl's guns, and the large hat of one of the robbers lay smoking on the earth behind him. "I didn't miss," Beryl said coolly, all semblances of fear gone from her expression. In her right hand was Regulus, leveled at the ma whose hat she'd shot off. He was veritably spooked, although his colleagues still tried to put on a show. "She can't shoot all three of us at once," a woman ventured, in the hopes of bolstering the confidence of her colleagues. "Oh, really?" came the cool reply. Just then, Beryl moved with impressive speed, drawing her gun, leveling it at the man on the right, who'd been gently, furtively approaching in the hopes that he would not be seen, and firing, all in one single, clean motion. He shrieked and grabbed his left ear, as he shot into the shadows. "As I said," the Earth mage intoned, "I didn't miss." There was no need for further play. The robbers seemed frightened enough, fleeing into the various places they had come out of. By this time, the two wagon drivers, certain that their escorts were handling security matters satisfactorily, quickly moved the spilled debris in the road out of the way, and returned to their positions. "All's clear on my end," Beryl said into the comm, "but I believe we should still keep our faculties sharp. There could be another trap planned." |

Lilith kept watch over the front wagon, watching for any possible intruders. As the two drivers moved to clear the roadblock, she noticed movement in the shadows, but it revealed itself to be nothing but a scrawny gray cat waving its tail, watching the caravan with unflickering yellow eyes. Lilith felt bad for the creature, without an owner or a home it was destined to be nothing but an animal in constant distress, or one consigned to simply watching its time go by while trying to survive. What a horrible existence. She supposed some people were like that too. After all, what was life aside a journey in which the ultimate destination was death? No, she was foolish to think that. There was so much more to living then dying. The mage had learned that, on her travels. She had met so many people, people who were happy. Perhaps that was why she hated the city of Dandelion so much. It robbed people of their happiness. It was not long before the two drivers had the road cleared and were back to directing the animals that pulled the wagon. Slowly but surely the caravan turned around the bend, picking up speed afterward. Just before that however, Lilith had re-assumed her position on the front wagon, holding up her comm to reply to Beryl's statement, even though it had occurred a few minutes before. "I agree with you, Beryl. I'd rather be safe then sorry. On another note, it looks like the path ahead is rather straightforward. Unless someone tries to take us by brute force we should be good for a while." Truth to be told, Lilith was actually most afraid of someone trying to attack the procession head-on. Luckily, for the moment she didn't have to hurry, as the caravan continued without delay or incident for quite some time. However, eventually the wagons were forced to hault again, although this time for an entirely different reason, as the first driver pointed vaguely to a spot up ahead where a large cloud of blackening smog lay. "That's not normal," he said, quietly. The smog was advancing and quickly. "Uh oh," Lilith said through the comm, "Smog attack incoming!" The little device then went silent, apparently muted by the cloud. It was hard to see, but not impossible, still it would put a major disadvantage on the caravan. Not to mention the fact that the animals pulling the wagons were just shy of bolting. |

The wagons began moving again, with apparently nothing left to hinder them. Hopefully from here on out would be a free and easy passage to the docks. With their erstwhile assailants skulking in the shadows, out of sight and out of mind, the members of the caravan procession moved slowly but surely towards their destination. The whereabouts of those lowlifes was unknown, which to the average person, would be enough, as long as those knaves had been sufficiently spooked enough not to want to come back. Beryl, however, felt worried that she couldn't specifically tell what they were up to at the moment. A few minutes passed, before Lilith responded to Beryl's advice to remain cautious. According to Lilith, if the path was straightforward for the most part, and whoever was interested in the special metals was really keen on having them, the likelihood of a full-blown frontal attack was very likely. And something told Beryl that might happen. If the lowlifes who had tried attacking the convoy were not backed by some reasonable amount of clout, they would have probably stuck to mugging individuals in dark alleyways. Beryl did not see the smog cloud, thanks to the fact that she was at the back of the second wagon, which was at the back of the first. She did hear Lilith give a warning, just before the smog swept past the caravans. Normal smoke and fog suspensions didn't move that fast; this was most likely magic, especially as it made the animals drawing the wagons extremely jittery. "I think we-- hello?" Beryl said into the comm, surprised at the fact that her device seemed dead. This was probably another effect of the smog. Whoever this was that was responsible for this smog was certainly a rung or more above the average Dandelion scamp. Putting down her comm gently and drawing her two shortswords, as shooting with her guns in the smog would be rather accuracy-punishing, Beryl activated her Conflict of the Mind. She immediately sensed two crouching figures, on the left side of her wagon. They seemed to be waiting for something, perhaps a signal. Hoping she wasn't making a mistake, Beryl also waited, even as she detected a third figure approaching from the back. She could not use her comm, so she left it where it lay, and hoped that Lilith and the drivers would be alright, even as she waited for the calm before the storm to break, which it most certainly would. |

Lilith jumped down almost immediately after delivering her message to the other driver and Beryl, placing the device in her right pocket. She couldn't see much through the thick smog, but she could hear, from behind, the driver struggling to keep his animals in check. It seemed that he wouldn't be able to help in this round of engagements. She concluded that the other driver was probably having the same problems. With the beasts making loud noises with their hooves, it was hard to hear any footsteps, but there was a muted yell ahead and to the right of the mage. It was probably one of the attackers. Maybe they had tripped over something. Seeing a few ripples in the smog from that area, Lilith predicted that an attack was about to be staged. Her pistol would be practically useless in the thick fog, and her knife, well let's just say she wasn't too fond of having a small range like that. "Magic it is, then," she muttered. The mage then proceeded to form a katana out of spacial matter, brandishing it on the quickly approaching foes. The first one was completely unprepared, and Lilith cut him down, but the second attacker, a woman, pulled out a knife just in time to block the mage's strike. However, her body was thrown off balance, and Lilith managed to kick her to the side. However, by then a third attacker was at her left side, and already thrown off by the kick she had performed she couldn't dodge the attack he had aimed at her left arm with a gun. Luckily, it wasn't a high quality bullet, but still Lilith yelled in pain as it made contact. She swung her sword at the man a moment later, opening a gash in his midsection. After that, no more attackers came, or at least for the moment. The woman whom Lilith had kicked away from her had grabbed the two injured men and slowly pulled them out of the street. For now, there were no attackers, but Lilith kept a firm grip on Nyx as she moved back towards the caravan. Her arm was throbbing, but for the moment she was able to shrug it off. She knew that wouldn't last long though. At least it wasn't bleeding. |

There were sounds coming from the front of the convoy, indicating that the second attack on the caravans had begun. As if waiting for the sound as well, the two crouching figures on the left darted towards the wagon, obviously making for the driver of the transport. The plan was most likely to take him out, and commandeer the vehicle, which they would drive off to Heaven knew where. Beryl was quick to intercept them, introducing herself to the first one with a flying double knee to the head. The second attacker, eager to get on with his assignment quickly, pointed a gun in his hand at the Seveni girl, who, while descending from her aerial maneuver, threw one of her shortswords at him, her accuracy unhindered by the smog, thanks to her Conflict of the Mind. Of course, it was only natural that her throw would not be perfectly accurate, she being in motion and all, but she didn't need the weapon to strike home. These guys were not so much experts; if they were, the first ambush would not have been as poorly executed as it was. The sword missed, thudding into the wooden side of the wagon, but causing the man to involuntarily duck, as he took his shot, the bullet missing its mark by far. Utilizing the magical ability of her shortsword, Beryl teleported to just next to the sword and the man, retrieving her weapon and driving her knee upwards into his jaw, even as he remained in his half-crouch position, and sandwiching the man's head between her knee and the side of the wagon. It was enough to knock him senseless. She could sense that the third figure had managed to climb to the top of the wagon, and was furtively moving towards the front, to jump the driver from behind. Clambering up the vehicle athletically, Beryl cut off the fellow, who, without seeming to skip a bit, drew a stiletto and lunged at her. Beryl parried the stab and swung the weapon in her other hand towards the offender, inverting the sword at the last instant so that the hilt smashed into the outlaw's head. While he reeled from the impact, a graceful tornado kick sent him off the wagon and face first into a wall. "We may need to get the animals moving, if we can," Beryl yelled, from her place on the wagon. "Keeping them static may make them more nervous." She didn't have practical knowledge with moving animals, but Beryl knew from experience that standing perfectly still when nervous was an uphill task. If the drivers could control their animals to begin moving again, albeit gently, they might be able to escape the smog. But now, the attackers would know their plans. But there could be an advantage there. If they decided to attempt to stop the wagons' progress, they would have to reveal themselves. |

There were no more attackers near the front, that much was clear in Lilith's eyes. The front driver had heard Beryl cloud and clear, as it seemed that the smog didn't change the properties of actual sound at all, just devices. The mage herself didn't hear the other's suggestion, but she did here the first driver yell at her. "I'm going to try to make the animals move! Get on or please get out of the way, I don't want them to trample you!" Letting Nyx dissapate into the air, Lilith sprinted towards the wagon. If on cue, as soon as she jumped onto it, so too did the beasts start moving. And fast. The mage was actually slammed backward a bit in her position, hitting her back hard against the metal in the caravan. Combined with the gunshot she had taken, Lilith's body was really starting to hurt. She didn't let her gaze fall off the road, however, and as the wagons escaped the smog, she could see a single figure slip away, transforming into an animal as they did so. In fact, it happened to be the same cat she saw earlier. Whoever it was, however, they wouldn't be striking again anytime soon. The animals slowed back down to a modest trot, and just as the mage caught sight of Dandelion's river, so too did the comm in her pocket expel a burst of static. Pulling it out of her pocket, she pressed the button to transmit a message. "Is everyone alright? The river'a up ahead, so I would say we're all clear." Now that hadn't been so bad, had it? Actually, take that back. She was hurting a lot now. (Sorry for the short post, my phone's about to die.) |

Fortunately, Beryl's advice was taken by the wagon drivers, and even much more fortunately, the suggestion worked. It would have been nothing short of calamitous if the animals had managed to bolt, despite their drivers' attempts at control, and a bolting animal was prone to most likely injuring itself, and to a greater degree, its riders. As a matter of fact, Beryl thought to herself that if she was the one trying to orchestrate the ambush, her first line of action would be to spook the wagon animals into bolting, try to direct them into a trap, and attempt killing the animals. The crash wouldn't harm the metals. The passengers would not be so necessary. She was glad whoever was in charge wasn't thinking about such a plan. Hurrying towards the fore of the wagon, Beryl was almost thrown off it, as the driver spurred his animal into motion. Fortunately for her, she instinctively flung herself down and managed to crawl over to the front, where she carefully brought herself to plop down beside the driver. "That was dangerous, you know," he said, after recovering from the near shock of thinking it had been one of the bandits who'd landed beside him. The Seveni girl grinned, her eyes on the back of the wagon before her. "I know, right? Well, danger is fun." The man grunted and said nothing, just as the convoy escaped the strange smog. Beryl noticed an ill-favored cat scurrying off, and paid it little heed. At the speed they were going, it would be difficult for any other little half-assed ambushes to give them a reason to sweat. Beryl's comm crackled to life, and she heard Lilith ask after the well-being of the rear caravan and its occupants. "A-okay on this side," the Seveni girl replied. "And yeah, I don't think there'll be any more issues to handle." Part of her worried that this was not the case, but that was just her. In a couple of minutes, the wagons arrived at the docks built on the river's bank. It was complete with its own knight outpost, probably one of the only places in Dandelion which had knights, so people would be careful not to misbehave here. Uninterested about the paperwork and bureaucratic nonsense that would characterize handing over the cargo to the right authorities, Beryl went over to where Lilith was. "Hey," she said, a bit of concern in her eyes, "you sure you're alright?" She could tell by the other mage's body language at least that the girl was at the very least uncomfortable. |
