Almost always the city of Dandelion was covered in fog, fog drenched in soot and noxious fumes that would cause anyone new to the place gag and possibly turn back. To someone who had lived in Dandelion their whole life, or at least for some time, however, it was just everyday protocol. For many the fog was actually inviting, making crime easier by covering their escape among other things. Crime was common in the city, almost too common. That's the thing with Dandelion, if someone didn't know to watch their back and possessions in the crime ridden city, chances are they'd be broke and potentially dead in no time at all. A wealthy man by the name of Derick Haussuar must have known this, as he had hired two mages to help guard a cargo of precious metal as it went through the city. Beryl Travertine, a mage of the Nine Lives Guild, and Lilith Nox, an old associate of the man, had been hired for the task, and were to meet the caravan at the northern entrance of Dandelion at 11:30 am, the precise arrival time of it. ~ It had been a long time since Lilith had been in Dandelion, 3 years to be exact, and already she was regretting her choice to help a man she used to work for. The city brought back many painful and resented memories, things that she had tried to forget for a long time. However, Lilith owed a favor to Derick Haussuar, a big one, and she was being paid for the job to escort cargo through the city, so it couldn't be all that bad. She had entered Dandelion a few hours ago, reminded immediately of the crime central's horrid atmosphere. Of course it wasn't anything new, as Lilith had lived in the city for almost half her childhood, but it did take an hour or so for her to get used to it again. It was about 30 minutes before the caravan was supposed to arrive that Lilith decided to head towards the northern entrance. Setting off in a brisk walk, she passed through several streets, taking the route that she always used to take, one with considerably less crime than most of Dandelion. Funny, even after being gone for so long Lilith still had the city almost completely memorized. She passed by a few other people while on her way, none of which she recognized. That was another thing about Dandelion, most people leave as soon as possible if they can. It seemed that a lot of people Lilith used to know had done that. She arrived at the meeting place, to the left of the entrance gate, with about 15 minutes to spare. Having nothing else to do, Lilith checked to make sure all of her equipment was in place. Her pistol was loaded with a set of ammunition, and the other set was within easy reloading distance. On the back of her belt was Lilith's combat knife, and in her pocket was a magical consumable. She wasn't missing anything, which was good, because if Dandelion was as rough of a place as it was 3 years ago, the job of guarding precious cargo wasn't going to be too easy. Still, Lilith wasn't afraid of the task at hand, she just wanted to be prepared for the worse. Hopefully the other person hired, whoever they happened to be, was capable, because Lilith really did not want to be doing double the work she was paid for. Maybe they would get along. Maybe they wouldn't. Whatever the case was, Lilith was determined to not fail the task at hand, no matter how things would turn out. |

Beryl sat idly atop a tall building that had partially become dilapidated, not enough to be a complete deathtrap, but messed up enough that someone who didn't know how to climb would risk life or limb to get to where the Seveni girl was. The building stood just outside the property of some fellow who wanted some goods of his to be transported across Dandelion. And he had employed Beryl as well as someone else she didn't know to safeguard his property. It was interesting to consider that the man had employed Beryl, being a Nine Lives mage, somewhat unofficially, as he did seem somewhat unwilling to pay the fare for a higher ranked mission, which in Beryl's opinion, this matter was meant to be. But the lovely thing about the guild was that it allowed its members a good deal of independence, as long as they didn't violate the guild rules, and so Beryl could accept the man's job as a freelance informal venture. The sight of a dark-haired woman entering the compound below made Beryl assume that the woman was supposed to be her partner for this horse and buggy babysitting tirade. Major reason for the assumption was that the woman was armed, so she was the one, or she had most likely come to steal, which seemed stupid, in the light of the fact that the owner of the goods to be transported had private security. What was his name again? Ah yes, Derick Haussuar. From her vantage point, Beryl could see no sign of the man, but she was sure he would appear once she descended from her resting place. With practiced speed and feline grace, the Earth mage made her way down the half-ruined tower, and with a flying leap, sailed clean over the wall of the compound with its barbed wire coils atop it, designed to dissuade climbers. It was not hard to enter such places, despite their security; Beryl made a living entering places she wasn't supposed to. "Take it easy, boys," she said calmly, as several thugs obviously paid by Mr. Haussuar started in surprise at the sudden entry, each one going for his weapon. "While playing the Dandelion-themed hide-and-seek with you guys would be fun, I think we all want to be paid by Mr. Haussuar before the end of the day." While some of the thugs made comments about her style of clothing or whistled, one scarred fellow walked up to her. "Beryl Travertine?" he asked. "Your accent does funny things to my surname, but yep, that's me," she replied sunnily. He didn't look too pleased. "We have a gate..." "Where's the fun in using that?" the Seveni girl shot back. For a moment, he glowered at her, then muttered, "wait here for the boss," before walking off, talking to himself about how unfortunate the boss was by employing two frail-looking girls to protect his stuff. "Well, isn't he a charmer?" Beryl asked, turning to the blue-eyed girl. "You must be my partner in the business of babysitting carriage wagons in the finest city in all of Fiore. Name's Beryl. Pleased to meet you," she concluded with a merry grin. Hopefully today would be fun. |

Lilith was quite surprised when a woman jumped down from a building not far from where she was standing. She highly doubted anyone wouldn't be, as a matter of fact. However, based on the fact that the guards started chatting with her before long, the mage guessed that she was the other person hired to guard the caravan. Based on her previous stunt, Lilith concluded that it wasn't going to be a pain to work with her. In fact, it was possible that the spacial mage might be the one dragging down the operation. Or maybe they'd find balance in their work. In any case, the woman had turned to Lilith after talking to the guards, and had seemed to had drawn the same conclusion as her, that they were working together. Lilith responded quickly to the woman's first statement. "Certainly someone who judges books by their cover," she remarked. "Pleased to meet you too, Beryl. My name's Lilith. So, do you know Mr. Haussuar?" Upon further observation, Lilith noticed Beryl's guild mark on her left hip. It wasn't one she was all too familiar with, but she was fairly certain they were based in Dandelion. Whatever the guild was, it was a surprise to Lilith that a member had actually accepted an honest job. Maybe the mages in this city of criminals weren't as bad as she had always assumed. |

The other girl identified herself as Lilith, responding to Beryl's greeting with enough courtesy for the Seveni girl to assess her as a decent individual. That was a breath of fresh air, seeing that Dandelion was infamous for its quality of people... unless Lilith wasn't from Dandelion. Even though Beryl called the criminally-steeped city her home, Beryl herself had not grown up here. However, she'd heard that her guild leader had, and he seemed to have turned out well, or so people said. "Nope," the Seveni girl chirped, in response to Lilith's question about if she knew the man in charge of the transport protection mission. "Never even heard of him, until today. But I think he's giving reasonably good money for this pleasure voyage, so I'm game." Yeah, that was Beryl. One who didn't know her well enough would assume that she was solely motivated by the acquisition of money, although money was actually a very good motivator. Beryl threw a glance at the guards in the employ of Mr. Haussuar. They were veritably hoodlums, little else, but at least, it was better, in the Earth mage's opinion, to have a job which didn't involve mugging and shivving Dandelion's populace, much less than model citizens, though they were. Certainly, Lilith was not one of them, at least not constantly in Haussuar's paybook. "So, are you a mercenary for hire like myself, or is there a less prosaic reason you want to help a moneybag guard his goodies?" the Nine Lives mage asked. Could be that Lilith, like Beryl, was a guild mage, although the Seveni girl was yet to see any guild stamp on her workmate for today. Well, some people tended to have their guild stamps in not so visible places. Beryl had heard of someone who, of all places, had decided to place his guild stamp on his butt, so in order to prove he was a member of his guild, he would have to moon his audience. Genius fellow he was. |

It seemed that Beryl was, in fact, motivated to take the job before them by something much different than Lilith, but to be fair that didn't really bother her all too much. Throughout her travels, Lilith had learned that every person had a different reason for why they were who they were. Maybe Beryl was someone who liked the idea of becoming wealthy. Or maybe money was just the means to accomplish something else. Whatever the case was, the spacial mage didn't dwell on her deep thinking any further, as her accomplice started speaking again, and revealed that the two's thoughts weren't all that different. "Mr. Haussuar used to help me a lot back when I lived in this... city," Lilith replied, with obvious disdain pronounced on the last word, "I promised to repay him one day, and this is just one way I can do that. And... well I'm running low on jewel right now, so I guess we have something in common in that sense." Okay, so maybe she shouldn't have revealed that much to Beryl, but chances are that when you tell things to people, they tend to tell things back. And truth to be told, Lilith was quite interested in the guild emblem that was on Beryl's body, although she didn't have the chance to ask about it. Maybe she would later. The guard that had previously spoken to Beryl came back into sight, along with a rather short, although not too plump man wearing a dress shirt and pants. The spacial mage recognized him almost immediately as Derick Haussuar, although despite the guard's comment earlier she was surprised he had actually came out to meet the two. Whatever the cargo happened to contain, it was valuable. "Hello Lilith and Beryl," he stated simply once he got within conversation distance. Not waiting for the two to respond, he continued talking. "The cargo will be here in about 5 minutes. As for what's inside, I figure it's best for you two to know, although please don't go spreading the news, alright?" Lilith responded with a simple, "Understood." The man would wait for Beryl to reply and then continue. "Simply put, its a magical type of metal that can be used for resistant, light armor. Quite valuable in a city like this one, so don't be surprised if someone that's part of one of the big gangs around here tries to steal it." Lilith became a bit worried about Derick's final statement, knowing far too well how things went in Dandelion. However, she forced herself not to react on the outside, giving a simple nod instead. |

"I see," the Seveni girl said, as Lilith explained her reason for taking the job. The dark-haired young woman seemed to dislike Dandelion, if Beryl could make a guess based on her tone when she mentioned the word 'city'. Of course, it was to be expected that decent folk would be appalled by the moral decadence of this gloomy place. Truth was, Dandelion had very little to make it attractive, and as a matter of fact, Beryl was mildly surprised that Lilith had actually lived here before. Lilith's case then was a matter of returning favors. It seemed then that this Haussuar fellow was not rotten, degraded stock then. Sure, it was practically impossible to find saints in Dandelion, so relatively good people were like a breath of fresh air. But it would be unwise to jump to conclusions so readily. This fellow could very well have his hands stained in something rather unsavory, even if he seemed to have some level of morals. Even the worst fellows had good sides. Speaking of which, Mr. Haussuar arrived. Beryl expected he would be taller, but she made no attempt to voice her opinion. With a quick, simple greeting, he jumped straight to business, informing the girls that he would prefer they kept their knowledge of what was in the carriage from leaking. Beryl was quite alright with that. She was sure she would have had problems, if Mr. Haussuar said that the goods were top secret, and no one needed to know what they were. "Fine by me," the Seveni girl said, indicating her willingness to acquiesce to the man's wish. The cargo seemed legit enough, though its purpose was yet unknown. Of course, Haussuar was right; criminals would most likely want to get their paws on the material. Even if they couldn't use it to craft items to help their dirty 'trade', they could always sell the stuff on the black market. "I hope you don't mind my asking, Mr. Haussuar," the blonde mage said, "but how far away is the destination of the cargo? Secondly, what is the purpose for its presence in a city such as this?" Being a Nine Lives mage, Beryl felt it was part of her duty not to assist any potentially criminal activities. Wait, fencing 'retrieved' artifacts from ruins and tombs wasn't criminal, was it? |

It seemed that Beryl wasn't going to trust Mr. Haussuar so easily, and that fact put Lilith a little on edge. She got that the cargo did seem a bit suspicious, but for someone who only took the job because it was decent pay it seemed odd that she had asked what would happen to it. Lilith wasn't going to lie, she was a little curious herself, but still it seemed almost a bit out of Beryl's character that the spacial mage had painted in her head. Perhaps she had a lot more moral than she was letting on. In any case, Mr. Haussuar didn't hesitate to reply when asked by Beryl. It seemed that he trusted her, although since they had never met Lilith wasn't entirely sure why, "Well, the last destination on this continent is a port city just south of here, which is why we need to pass through Dandelion. As for where it goes after that, there's an island nation south of here that loves using the metal for their flying ships. Don't worry, they're peaceful and only uses their military for defense. Quite a strange but pleasant place, actually," he explained. Lilith herself had never heard of the place, and wanted quite dearly to ask what it's name was, but she figured that she could just look it up on a map someday. It sounded like a nice enough place. After a little bit more waiting around, the cargo came into the city, it being quite obvious by the two large caravans being pulled by animals that were good at such things. Lilith herself was surprised by the procession, and immediately ruled out many routes that they could have taken in case of an emergency. At least it would be hard for someone to steal a large amount of stuff from the two vehicles because there was so much, but smaller, more agile thieves could probably get the job done and then sell the small amounts of metal. It seemed that the driver had already been given a clear route to follow. Mr. Haussuar gave them a simple goodbye and then left the scene. It seemed the caravan had stopped for the two to either board or start walking alongside. "So," she started, turning to her partner, "would you like to take the front one or the back one?" |

It seemed Mr. Haussuar was honest enough about his merchandise, and it seemed the business was rather legit, as a matter of fact. So the main reason these special metals were in Dandelion was because the path to the ports was quickest through the crime-infested city, thanks to its proximity to the sea. And their final destination was quite satisfactory. "Caelum, huh?" the Seveni girl said at the mention of the island nation with flying ships. "I've heard of the place." While that was all she said, it was obvious Beryl was satisfied with the answer she had been given. It was quite unlikely that Caelum would misuse the metal, although Beryl's supposition was based on the premise that the island nation had never attacked Fiore, nor was apparently inclined to do so, being somewhat isolationist and peaceful. After a bit of dillydallying, the items to be guarded came along, conveyed in two large caravans drawn by beasts. Beryl was glad that the number of caravans was only two. A convoy with large numbers would be quite difficult to protect, especially in a place like Dandelion, which, being the kind of place it was, had whole sectors which desperately wanted in the aspect of urban planning. This would lead to places with narrow roads, and irregular lanes. Such places could easily help assailants to break up the convoy, making it even harder to defend the goods. Two caravans? Much harder to separate than ten. Mr. Haussuar bade the girls and the caravans goodbye and left the scene, having done what was necessary for him to do. "He does seem like a rather decent fellow," the Seveni girl stated quietly, giving words to her thoughts about the man when she'd first met him. "Odd, for someone based in this delightfully lovely cesspit...." The question about positioning with the carriages was quickly resolved. "I'll take the back," Beryl replied to Lilith, as she climbed up and seated herself at the back of the caravan positioned behind, with herself backing the caravan driver and his beasts. "It's comfortable; I might even be tempted enough to sleep off... just kidding." Beryl smiled brightly as she made herself comfortable. Her real reason for choosing the back caravan was that the best way to stop the caravan would be to place a road block on the road before the caravan. If there was going to be a plan to attack the caravan from the back, it would have to be more ingenious, as such, carried out by a more intelligent ilk of criminals, which meant they might be more dangerous. But who knew what would happen? |

So the nation's name was Caelum. Beryl seemed to know quite a bit about the world, or she just was familiar with foreign affairs. Whatever the case, Lilith was thankful that she wouldn't have to be doing research, as now that she thought about it that could get her into some sticky situations. Especially since the nation at hand was making military vehicles in their spare time. "Alright then, the front it is for me," Lilith said in response to Beryl's claim. She then proceeded to walk over toward the front of the first wagon, noting on her way there that the back of her wagon was covered to prevent people from stealing stuff from it. She also saw that it was easily within the line of sight of the second driver. Lilith had assumed that would be the caravan's biggest weak point, but maybe they weren't as bad off as she had thought. As Lilith climbed onto the wagon at sat down near the front driver, she noticed a communications device on the seat next to her. She picked it up, and before the mage could ask what it was for the driver starting speak. "That comm is hooked up to three others. I have one, the other driver has one, and your companion should be getting one soon." The man didn't introduce himself or even say hello, suggesting that these kinds of runs were just routine for him. "Thank you then. I'll go ahead and assume you're used to this kind of work. That should be a good thing for us," Lilith remarked. The driver simply nodded, although there was a slight smile on his face. The mage guessed that he was proud of his work. That couldn't be too bad, could it? |

"Oi," the driver of the wagon which Beryl had chosen called out, hoping to get the Seveni girl's attention. Beryl sighed, and with a nimble jump, got to the top of the wagon, clambering across its length to see the man who had called her. The wagon's frame was of durable material; four grown men could stand on it without fear of the thing breaking, so there was little to no chance of any likely robbers destroying the wagon's frame so they could whisk off the merchandise from above. It seemed Mr. Haussuar did invest well in his transportation business. "Yeah?" Beryl asked, causing the man to look up and backwards at the girl lying idly atop the wagon. "Have this," he said, handing out the communications device meant for her. She reached down and took it, studying it momentarily before saying "thanks," and heading back towards her chosen spot of vigil. "You sure you don't want to pick a more comfortable spot?" the man asked. "Nope, here is just great," Beryl called back. As the wagons began to move out, Beryl said into the communication device, "let's be most alert in alleys or narrow ways. Such places are best for staging ambushes. Any strange sight or movement should be immediately raised. I shall serve here as a rearguard." So saying, the Seveni girl took a relaxed position, although against appearances, she was as alert as she could be. For a while, the wagons moved quietly without incident. Then Beryl saw a shadow move. She smiled. Someone was, or some folks were, following, although they were taking great pains to keep themselves hidden. "We've got company," Beryl said gently, loud enough to be heard over the comm system, but not too loud so that whoever was in the shadows wouldn't hear her. "At least one person is tailing us. There'll probably be a staged ambush close-by, so let's all stay sharp." |
