Well now here was a philosophical debate all in itself. He found himself liking this Beryl more and more. It was a cynical view she held to be sure, one that he wasn't sure if he agreed with. Yes she was right in a way, Dandelion pushed people to the wall and that environment was self-perpetuating. Yet did he believe that's what people truly were? It was a hard sell, especially to someone with his upbringing. Everyone had the potential in them to do good. To be good. He simply had to believe that or his whole overarching philosophy would start falling apart.

Leaping after Beryl and skidding slightly on his landing he found his feet just about on the edge. Adjusting his hat he smiled nonchalantly. This was kinda fun, he could certainly see himself getting used to it. Glancing sideways at Beryl he wondered what kind of upbringing she had. "Yes... I've found myself wondering that myself on more than one occasion. Formal wear can be so painfully restrictive. What about you? Did you grow up here?"

He had to wonder what she was so surprised with at first, only nodding in affirmation. Then when she jumped to conclusions he raised his hands and shook his head. "No no, not like that. I believe he called it a pipe? He put this stuff in it and lit it on fire, then breathed in the smoke. I never did ask him why though, thought it might be rude. Maybe it had some sort of medical purpose?" He shrugged in defeat, putting on a mask of theatrical sadness. "I may never know. But I have seen a Dragon Slayer, just not of the smoke variety. His affinity was with water, I believe he went by the nickname 'The Tsunami'. I've only had the honour of meeting him once. Suijin is the leader of Sabertooth, the guild I'm returning to in Mizhou assuming they will have me. As far as I'm concerned I still need to hone my skills and knowledge of the world a little more."

His eyes took on a slightly dreamy quality as he thought of that faraway city. "Ah Mizhou. Absolute splendour, richness in variance. Not over the top or extravagant, but diversity like nothing I've ever seen. You can spend a week switching sectors each day and still see something completely new every time. Very lively, oh yes." He nodded, grinning ear to ear. It had been the first place he had really visited after leaving his home village and he had fallen in love with the city from day one. "Even if there was no guild there I would still strongly consider making it my home. Please, do stop by when you decide to visit. Perhaps by then I'll actually know the city well enough to show you around." He finished with a laugh, looking around at where they had stopped.

"It's funny how perspective can change the very same thing into something new. There is something about Dandelion from up here that's just different. I can appreciate now why you like this 'Highway'."

When Hikaru mentioned the contraption used to 'eat fire', a pipe, Beryl froze for a moment, then burst into laughter, nearly falling off the wall on which she had perched. After a quick, successful struggle to right herself, Beryl glanced at the swordsman with a mock correcting glare. But the sham attempt at trying to be serious couldn't hold for long, and she was laughing again. "A pipe. That's not eating fire, silly dear; the fellow was smoking. It's, uh, a, what should I call it, form of recreation, I suppose."

The Seveni girl became calmer now, as she momentarily looked up at the night sky. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be too hard on you like that. When I first came to Fiore, there were a lot of things I didn't understand, things that were normal to the average Fiorean, but would stomp one who'd never seen them before," the Earth mage said. "Let me explain smoking, if I can. The stuff in the pipe which is lit is usually a plant extract, though it could be something less salubrious. Breathing in the fumes is soothing, according to those who smoke, or at the very best could be exhilarating, based on the nature of the fumes, so people say. Never tried it, though."

Despite the fact that Hikaru had asked whether Beryl had grown up in Dandelion, she let him finish talking before she answered his question. So the guild leader of Sabertooth was also a Dragon Slayer. It seemed those guys were stronger than she'd thought. For a moment, Beryl thought about her Geomancy, and felt a little displeased, though the feeling didn't show on her face. Having trained intensively in perfecting her magic, in her opinion, it still left a lot to be desired. Ah well, such was life. To brighter matters, it was settled; she would visit Mizhou when she could. It sounded rather like an interesting place. From Hikaru's words, even though he was coming from Mizhou, it wasn't his homeland. While wondering where that was, Beryl decided not to ask until she had answered his question.

"I didn't grow up in Dandelion," she said. "I'd probably have turned out terribly, if I did... or... I don't know... I don't know at all." With what she had been through, the Earth mage wondered if she would have been better off growing up in Dandelion. At least she would have a bit of more freedom. The feeling that all her life, the events that had happened to her had been orchestrated by a dark, ill-meaning power, whose intentions for her were not totally understood, wasn't very comforting. But then again, who knew whether a worse fate may have befallen her, had she been born and raised here. She sighed audibly, and shrugged.

"Whatever. We haven't reached our destination, and the night's still young. Let's move." With that, she was off again. "There are some parts of Dandelion which are not so bad. Like the area around Nine Lives. The guild has made sure there's been less of a mess around there. And about guilds, why Sabertooth? What are your reasons for choosing it? Don't know much about the place, but I was thinking that a very decent fellow such as yourself would go for Lamia Scale or Blue Pegasus. I won't say Fairy Tail. It may be a light guild, but I hear the place is full of hooligans." She chuckled as she spoke.

Suddenly dropping into the street below, the Seveni girl pointed at a decent-looking bar on the other side of the road to which the street was connected. "There's our destination." And Hikaru would notice that this section of town seemed more organized, safer even, than where they'd been coming from.

Hikaru chuckled softly as Beryl laughed at his story, a faint red coloring his face. Blissfully it was at least partially hidden by his hat as he tipped it lower. It was probably fair to be considered "silly" for his original interpretation. "That's what I figured out after the fact, yes. Did you know I originally thought he was going to explode? In my defense, I would like to think it was a legitimate concern when I saw fire coming out of a person and don't know what a smoking a pipe was."

Noting her uncertain answer (or rather explanation) to his question of nationality Hikaru felt it was probably for the best that he didn't pry too hard. Well that's not entirely true. He didn't know if it would be ok to or not, but he could certainly relate to someone not wanting to be asked too many probing questions. Seeing her pause he crouched down and offered his two gems of advice. "Some things we can never truly know, but it does us little good to dwell on them. What you have, right here," He rapped the ground twice with his knuckles. "This is what you know, so this is all you can afford to worry about. Worrying outside of your sphere of influence is like asking for an ulcer." He paused, hoping he hadn't said too much. "At least in my experience."

Following Beryl silently as she moved through the highway Hikaru did his best to take in his surroundings from the vantage point it offered. So much so in fact that he almost missed the question. "Hmm? Oh, why Sabertooth? Well to be perfectly honest my knowledge of most guilds is limited at best. Until a few weeks ago I didn't know what a pipe was, what can you expect? So you would be justified in saying it sounds like I'm jumping the gun a bit here with my choice, I might very well be. I have to consider a few things. The first and most important is simple, you've seen me when I fight. I'm not exactly a poster child for the light guilds, and I'm here to make a positive difference so that rules out the dark guilds from what I hear of them. As long as Sabertooth works towards the betterment of Mizhou I see benefit to lending them my sword. Many of Sabertooth are decent people, drawn to that wild allure they offer. If it doesn't work out, who knows? I'll be wandering again, and the road will take me where it will."

"Although I have to admit, people are a lot more accepting of my form than I thought they would be." Hikaru threw a sideways glance at Beryl. "I would have thought... I don't know. A lot more running and either screaming, attempted stabbing, or both." He laughed ruefully. "Not to alarm you or anything, but how do you know I'm not dangerous? That's what I keep expecting people to think and while I rather appreciate it that few have so far it's confusing the crap out of me."

Staying on the "highway" for a few more seconds after Beryl dropped he could indeed see the sleaze factor was noticeably lower in these parts. Dropping down alongside her he wondered what this was all about. "Tonight's events certainly do warrant a few celebratory drinks, if that's what you're implying. You mentioned Nine-Lives keeping this area safer, is that the guild you're a part of?" A hint of humor creeping back into his voice he went on playfully. "Should I be worried about the safety of my wallet?"

To a very large extent, what the swordsman had said about worrying about things outside one's control radius was true. But Beryl was prone to worrying, and exaggerated bouts of anxiety in her worse moments. Coupled with the fact that her past, which, in her opinion, was outside her sphere of influence, had the very real potential to come at a time she was unawares and mess up her current existence, the Seveni girl was sure she had reason to ask for the ulcer, as unprofitable as that appeared to be.

It seemed Beryl and Hikaru weren't too different as far as their goals were concerned; okay, Beryl was sure she was probably more selfish than Hikaru, but the intention to do something to better anything in one's own little way was not foreign to Beryl. That, and running away. Yet, despite the desire to do something helpful, just like Beryl, the Take-Over mage didn't seem too interested in the trappings of light guilds, considering himself not proper enough for them. "That being the case, I think you'll fit into Sabertooth just fine," the Seveni girl stated.

As to Hikaru's bewilderment about people not freaking out and running away or becoming hostile, Beryl smiled wryly, and waited for him to jump down from the 'highway' before responding to his statement. "The best I can offer is that Fiore is full of weird shit types of magic, and so someone changing into a half-demon isn't so scary, though I have heard of some places where magic may put one in trouble. And yes, I'm a Nine Lives mage. And yes, you should be worried about the safety of your wallet. It might get stabbed to death," she replied with an offhanded, uncaring shrug, although her response was obviously not in the least serious.

Beryl led the way into the bar, whose interior would be rather neat and orderly. Walking up to the bar, she took her seat on one of the bar stools and simply placed money on the counter, which the bartender took, as she simply said, "the usual."

"Still avoiding liquor; what a pansy. Say, haven't seen your boyfriend around before," the barman stated, leering as he placed a relatively large mug filled with strawberry-flavored ice cream on the bar before the Seveni girl. "That's because you're so blind you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a Pergrandian spray musket," she retorted, before swiveling on her stool to face Hikaru, as the bartender chuckled.

"Your drink's on me, as long as it's not too expensive. That balding genius over there," she gestured at the bartender, who responded with a mock salute, "he's got everything as far as drinks or similar fares are concerned ranging from 200 year old brandy to fresh yogurt to cow urine. Okay, almost everything. In any case, don't go ordering anything with over-fancy names, else you might just wake up in this facility's backyard tomorrow morning naked, without your wallet and with a headache the size of Crocus. Or, now that I think about such a tomorrow, go ahead and order what you want. Life is all about risks, right?"

Her smile had a rather cute yet naughty adjective to it, as she and the bartender waited to hear his order.

Weird shit type of magic doesn't even begin to cover it, Hikaru thought to himself with a sense of bitterness he tried and failed to repress. He didn't "change" into anything. The demonic aspects he took on weren't a side effect of his magic, it was the other way around. Hunters like him were reminded all too often just how dangerous that made them, both to themselves and to others. Maybe that was the real reason he had to get away from home, to not have to listen to people praising his skill all the while overtly doubting his every move. The mixed signals were enough to drive anyone insane, maybe that's really why so many lost themselves. Out here people either didn't realize what he was or didn't care, something that he doubted he could ever wrap his head around.

It was easy to lose himself in a gloomy mood when thinking about the clan but tonight was not a night for such things. However small he had done a good thing. Perhaps found a reliable friend in the process, no mean feat considering where he found himself of all places. When was the last time he had allowed himself to simply have a good time? Never. Before leaving home everything was always carefully calculated and controlled, even leisure time meticulously managed. Since leaving he'd been on the road, something that should have brought him freedom unlike anything before. Yet instead he spent his time studying his surroundings, looking for deeper lessons where none were to be had.

Finding himself being waited on for an answer he looked between the icecream and Beryl questioningly, the magic of her smile not lost on him. Turning to the bartender he ordered cheerfully. "I'll take a bottle of local Nigori, but please. Nothing that's going to leave me waking up naked in the backyard. Beryl might not appreciate her 'boyfriend' being ogled." Sharing a laugh with the man he poured himself a drink once it arrived. Pausing for a moment he raised a toast. "To taking risks." Drinking his sake he placed the cup back down and poured another before returning his smile with a mischievous one of his own. "For the record... Nigori sake? Heavenly on ice cream, although personally I've only ever tried it on chocolate. Give it a shot if the mood strikes you, although I won't judge you if you have a reason not to drink."

It suddenly dawned on him that at some point later on that night he would likely need a place to sleep, unless he felt like slumming it on the streets. Not an attractive option in this city. This particular area of Dandelion would likely be where he had the best chances of waking up and not getting shived, maybe there was a room he could rent hereabouts. Hopefully he would remember to ask about that while he was still mostly in control of his senses. For now though he was far more interested in casually flirting and indulging in this new thing called allowing himself to relax. It was a good feeling.

"You know dear, when you smile at me like that I can't tell if you like what you see for reasons I can be happy with or just see an easy mark. Makes a guy wonder how many others you've brought here." He didn't sound particularly upset at the thought of being a target, not when it accompanied a smile that could easily melt the tops off the Taiji mountains. Heh, that line was actually not half bad in a hilariously cheesy kind of way. No way in hell he'd say something that ridiculous sounding to someone he'd just met though. He instead carried on in mock concern, his face perfectly dead-pan. "This is the part where you console me with tales of how I'm the most special snowflake of them all."

Beryl didn't know what Nigori was, but she was sure it was alcoholic, from the smell alone. In response to Hikaru's toast, the Seveni girl raised her spoon, with its head filled halfway with ice cream. "To taking risks." To a very large extent, Beryl was a fan of taking risks, but she was certain there had to be a limit to everything, which was why she was quite careful of getting herself drunk, because simply by observation, she had noticed that drunk folks seemed to have a hard time controlling themselves, their tongues especially. That was a little too expensive, in Beryl's opinion, to attempt at present.

Hikaru's next words verified it: Nigori was a sake variant. Beryl had no idea how it varied from the basic sake, but she didn't think she cared to know. As for sake and ice cream, that seemed like an interesting possibility. Beryl decided she would probably try it one day, locked up in her room in the Nine Lives guild. "I may give it a try, because it does sound like a more interesting way of taking alcohol," she replied with a gentle shrug, "but I get the feeling that it won't be today. Don't worry, if I do, I'll find a way of letting you know how the matter turned out."

With her fingers interlocked and her hands on the bar, Beryl tilted her head and watched Hikaru with a quizzical expression. "Hikaru, are you drunk?" she asked, sounding for all the world like she was serious. Then she grinned, and said, "because that's too early to be getting tipsy. In any case, I wonder what exactly you mean by 'an easy mark'." Her face was the very picture of innocence. "And as to how many others I've brought here, isn't that a bit private? Anyhow, I dunno, but probably ten or more since I came to Dandelion." The bartender gave her a half-incredulous, half-amused look, before she added, "but they were all cats." The balding man chuckled, shook his head and muttered something about how right Beryl was.

"So, I don't think you're a snowflake; you seem too warm to be one," the Seveni girl stated, looking like she'd totally lost the idea he was trying to convey by using the word 'snowflake' to refer to uniqueness. "And winter's past, anyways, so all the snowflakes have returned to wherever it is they came from. But yeah, you're quite different from all those I've brought here. You walk on two legs, don't have a tail, and you're evidently not drinking milk. That enough for you?"

She spooned a little more ice cream into her mouth. "So, seen any other place like Dandelion, the cesspit of Fiore?"

So Beryl wasn't interested in trying out the drink right at that moment. Hikaru gave a shrug and nodded. "Let me know what flavors you try it with, I'm curious to see what it's like with anything other than chocolate." He finished his drink and placed the cup down, not bothering to refill it this time. Perhaps in a little while, he wasn't sure if this was going to be a long night or not.

Her next words had him blinking in surprise. Cats. It was fucking cats. He would have to respond to things one at a time but... cats. The fact that he was being compared to an animal usually kept as a pet simultaneously amused yet annoyed him. "Hey now, I've had two drinks not two bottles. I'll have you know that I am expressly forbidden from becoming flat out drunk, and that's one rule that me and the elders actually agree upon." A conspiratorial smirk came across his face. "Tipsy though you may get to see tonight depending on how long we stay out."

But seriously, cats???

"As to me supposedly being special, I think you're one for three. Maybe one and a half. You see, Nigori has a very similar consistency to milk. Why do you think they go so well together? Secondly, I don't have a tail... right now. I've been told that comes along somewhere down the line. Eventually." Hikaru shook his head mournfully. "Beryl I'm sorry, but I think you have a problem. You have an obsession... Do I need to alert your friends to stage an intervention?"

Pouring himself another drink Hikaru pondered Beryl's last question.

"Hmm. Any places like Dandelion? I can't imagine there being anyplace quite like it, no. Although who knows, perhaps there is. I've been on the road almost nonstop since leaving home, but that hasn't been very long. What I thought I knew for sure yesterday may be completely disproved today. If it would make you happy I suppose I could write to you if I find such a place, but something tells me the validation of another cesspool as you put it existing elsewhere wouldn't really make you feel any better about the one you live in."

"But what about you? I'm curious about where your travels have taken you, clearly you weren't born here so at some point the road was your home. Or perhaps to you it was merely a temporary thing. Either way I'd be interested to know what roads you've been on, perhaps it could help me decide where I'm to head next."

Beryl looked just as dolorous as the swordsman when he mentioned that he thought she had a problem. While her expression was merely a comical mirror of his own, Beryl was a little surprised to realize, when Hikaru suggested having her friends intervene in her matter, that she actually did have very few people she could call friends. Most people she had met were simply just acquaintances. Much of the fault of this phenomenon could be traced to the fact that, while Beryl tried to be as friendly as she could manage, she ultimately was still reclusive, and friendship seemed to be based on opening up to those close to you, and Beryl wasn't sure there was anyone like that, currently.

"Mine is really a sorry case, I believe," the Seveni girl said, sounding pensive, "especially seeing that your desire to alert my friends about my condition may actually backfire on your head. You see, when you mentioned friends, I realized that a good number of them-- well, never mind." She was quiet for a moment, before a bright smile appeared on her face. "In any case, I hear that the best people around seem to have a few screws loose, so I dunno, my case may not be so horrid, after all."

It appeared Dandelion was, so far, the only whacked-up place (as far as law and order, and all the things that made for happy and peaceful living, went) that Hikaru had been to, although he did confess that he didn't have so many temporal periods of wandering experience under his belt. Beryl shook her head enthusiastically in a negatory gesture when he suggested writing to her if he did come across another place as bad as Dandelion. Glad she was when he deduced correctly that she wouldn't be interested in getting to know if he found somewhere as depraved as Dandelion.

"I'm from Seven," Beryl said, in response to Hikaru's latest inquiry. "Spent most of my earlier years there, and had to move to Fiore, whereI did a little roaming alongside some... paladins, before I got my tan in the Sanzibar desert. So, if you're looking for sun, sand and no sea, I recommend Sanzibar. You could spend a lifetime wandering the place.

Have you been to the Taiji Mountains? Never been there myself, but I'm keen on checking it out; I've read about its serenity and picturesque sights, the perfect place for any tourist, like yourself."
She emphasized the word 'tourist', just to jab at Hikaru. "If you love walking, which I suppose you do, you can explore the Cinnabar Range. For my part, if I'm going anywhere next, it's Tessera. I've read that the place is built city upon city, so the most enticing ruins are deep underneath the city itself. Wonder why they built it so, but hey, I'm not complaining."

Hikaru wasn't sure what to think of Beryl's reaction, what with the side-stepping, deflection and whatnot. Perhaps it was seeing someone else other than himself do it that really bothered him. He had no way of confirming there really was a problem, or that his help would even be accepted if there was, but there was something about this one that made him want to try anyway. That thought in itself was a sobering one because while he was practically expected to care about others on principle this marked perhaps the first time he cared about someone else on a personal level outside of immediate family. The end result was perhaps the same but the distinction of it feeling like his choice rather than the result of a mentality indoctrinated over the years made all the difference for him.

"The way you say that makes them sound like very dangerous people. Beryl please, we have identified yet another problem. Our stages intervention needs a staged intervention. No worries, I shall intervene on their behalf! Wait, am I not a part of the problems? Hmm." Hikaru joked around in an attempt to keep the conversation light. If she wanted to be evasive on the subject of her friends he would push the conversation away from that. "In any case your case can't be that 'horrid'. You're an attractive, funny and smart woman that can hold her own in a fight." Hikaru stated all this plainly like he was discussing the weather with someone. He wasn't even trying to flatter her, those were just the facts as he saw them. "Frankly I don't know what other traits someone needs. Empathy, but you clearly have that too as you've demonstrated tonight." Perhaps being less deflective and more open is what he wanted to say, but it was neither his place nor his right. Hypocrisy wasn't something he felt like practising anytime soon.

"Paladins are good people in my experience, we have the Order of the Sun." He laughed softly as he thought of his cousins in the order. Former priests given fancy ceremonial suits and sat behind a desk for the rest of their days except on special occasions. "Although they're mostly relegated to being glorified bureaucrats these days, no need for anyone outside the hunters to see combat anymore." There was a hint of pride in that last statement. He may be a novice initiate but he belonged to that, even here in Dandelion. Hikaru grimaced when she described Sanzibar, wincing when she mentioned being able to spend a lifetime there. Odds were very good their definitions of a lifetime were very different measures of time and spending that long in a place that had nothing but that bleakness was not an appealing thought. He shook his head at her recommendation, chuckling softly. No thank you.

"The mountains? Once. I met a fox-lady and had to convince her not to eat me, for to rid the world of this pretty face would be a true tragedy." Hikaru pointed at his scarred mug with a grin to show he was joking. Actually he was only partially joking, there really was a fox lady and he was concerned with being mauled at first. Turned out she was pretty nice."But other than that you're very right, tourists like myself seeking a place of peace would love it." Nonplussed by her jab he kept a straight face as he kept talking. "Oh and, she did walk on four legs at first. 9 tails if you could believe it. You could probably entice her to drink milk. Oh hang on, I'm supposed to be helping. Ignore all that, we need to keep your willpower strong."

Clearing his throat he casually stretched and kept going. "Cinnabar, Tessera, both are places that I have yet to see. Same with Sanzibar I suppose. Someday I'll know them all, or at least I very much hope so. Time is on my side, barring some cutthroat on the streets of Dandelion prematurely ending my journey for the contents of my wallet." Taking another drink for himself he finished it off and then pushed the rest of the bottle away. This was probably enough. He could drink more, but had no need of it.

"What is Seven like? The world outside of Fiore in general?" Until recently even Fiore felt like this impossibly vast land that could never possibly be within the scope of his interests, but now he was out there. Seeing that new and strange world. Assuming he lasted that long some day he'd know all of Fiore like the back of his hand, he had no doubt about that. Every place he found held some of his love, even holes in the ground like Dandelion had their gems. Then what? Once he had experienced Fiore to the fullest what was he going to do?

Mildly surprised, but not at all displeased that Hikaru had not bothered to press on about the nature and other characteristics of Beryl's friends, the Seveni girl chuckled at the man wondering whether he wasn't 'part of the problem', as she put another spoon of the cold delicious dessert before her into her mouth. Some others would have probably tried to press information out of her, which would have been rather unsuccessful, unless they were masters in playing mind games, or had psychic assistance.

Beryl allowed herself to smile, a side-skewed expression which generally appeared demure, but at the same time reflected some unasked question in the back of her mind, regarding the swordsman's compliment. Of course, it was lovely to have someone say nice things about you, but people often said nice things to ingratiate themselves with someone from whom they desired to get things. Hikaru didn't seem like the sort, but Beryl always favored the philosophy which noted that one could never be too careful. Even if he wasn't flattering her.

"Flattery won't get you anywhere, but..." she momentarily dropped her eyes, still smiling, the expression on her face actually more truthfully bashful than merely coy, "thanks." Beryl momentarily wondered why she felt warm, having been commended by Hikaru, and hoped her well-tanned skin was enough to hide the slight flush she felt from the little extra volume of blood in her facial capillaries. Perhaps it was that, despite his somewhat average features, Hikaru's eyes reflected some hidden kindness in his soul. Perhaps kindness had its own aesthetic value.

The girl's emerald eyes quickly returned to connect with Hikaru's, as he talked about paladins and a nine-tailed fox-lady in the mountains, and his opinions on the places which she had suggested that he visit. Turned out that Beryl herself needed quite a good deal of tourist activity herself. There was so much she hadn't seen, and many more things she would really love to experience. The part about keeping her willpower strong brought Beryl back to the present surrounding, causing her to burst into silvery peals of laughter.

"You're right," she said, still looking tickled. "I really must focus on preserving my willpower. It must be the ice cream. I hear sugar gets people drunk, but it's so addictive." Beryl looked at the unfinished bottle of liquor which Hikaru had just shifted aside. At least the fellow knew when to stop. That was wise. If there was any place never to get drunk as a stranger, it was Dandelion. The bartender looked at the bottle as well, his eyebrow cocking in inquiry. "How is that any of your business?" Beryl asked with mock hostility, anticipating his unasked question, causing the man to shake his head and set to attending to other business.

"How is the world outside Fiore?" Beryl asked, echoing Hikaru's question. "I haven't the foggiest idea, but I can talk about Seven." Her eyes had a faraway adjective, with something of sorrow intermingled with longing. "It's lovely. And whack. And lovely and whack. Some crazy event so many years ago all but destroyed the nation, and yet no country dares invade it. Strange, inexplicable things happen, and eldritch cults are as common as library clubs. But the skies are lovely. In the daytime, it's all grey and cloudy, but at night, it's panoramic, or totally black, like one was standing upside down and hanging over an abyss. But people always warn not to look at the sky too long. I learned not to look at the sky too long."

She left that last part unexplained.
