Fairy Tail Guild RP Current News

Hey everyone, it's me, your Lord and Savior, your Once and Future King, and your new Admin-for-Life Unlimit Sendo. I'm here to drop some turnbuckle-diving elbows and awesome news. There's been some relatively small updates to rulings regarding summon familiars and single summons. Additionally, there's also been a pretty big update in regards to the AP shop which reorganizes it and adds a ton of new stuff. You can find that in the AP Shop section under Item Creation. Check it out.

Name: Hikaru (Yoshirou) KagetaiyoNickname: N/A for now.
Age: 24Gender: Male
Height: 5'10", 178 cmWeight: 165 lbs, 74.8 kg
Guild: N/AClass: D
Affiliation: Neutral (Chaotic Good)blood type: O(-)
Birthday: June 20thZodiac: Gemini
Occupation: RunawayFont color: Grey (#808080), Red (#FF0000)
Magic Type: TakeoverEyes: Brown (Red dependant on magic)
Hair: BlackRace: Human/Fiend hybrid

Appearance
Physical Description: Standing at 5'10", Hikaru is roughly average height. That is not to say average height for superman mages (who seem to have this tendency to be giants or absolutely tiny) running around being all important and whatnot, average for your typical, regular, plain old human. He is nothing special to look at upon first glance, and sometimes second or even third glance will fail to yield anything either. Yet if someone were to be uncharacteristically persistent, if they truly wanted to pierce past the surface, they would see... well not much. They might see the scars that adorn his face, one vertically over his right eye and another horizontal across his cheek. Perhaps they might see the quiet kindness in his eyes that seem to avoid contact perhaps a little quicker than most. Perhaps they might note his raven black hair perpetually tied back in a ponytail, or his lean and unobtrusive muscles honed through training for speed and agility over brute strength.

Maybe they look past all that, they've seen all there is to see about his physical qualities. They'd see how he interacts with those around him and wonder he was just born smiling funny or if there's something actually bothering him. Or perhaps why it takes so long for any emotion at all to show.

Clothing: In terms of clothing, Hikaru's choice is typically very... traditional. On a typical day he will wear a kamishimo, which is comprised of the hakama (pants), kimono, and (in his case) a frayed kataginu (jacket). On his arms are a pair of Kote (armored sleeves) to protect them, and on his legs a pair of Kyahan (cloth leggings) provide minimal protection against both the elements and bruised shins. His sword is kept tied at his waist to an Uwa-obi (sash). On his feet are tabi (socks) in a pair of waraji (sandals). Of the rest of his equipment, the staff is usually held in hand to aid in travel as a walking stick and the bow and arrows are kept stored away but on hand should they be needed.

Since leaving his village to search the world Hikaru has yet to fully try out all of the marvels there are, like non-archaic clothes. Perhaps with time that shall change...
Clothing

Accessories: Hikaru keeps with him at all times a simple and worn straw hat, with a jade coloured cap at the top.
Straw hat

Extra: Hikaru has the image of a dark sun on his back.

Personality
Hikaru is the type of man that typically goes unnoticed. Quiet, unassuming, but not unsettlingly so that he might draw attention. Years, truthfully decades of training have molded him in the art of blending in. Yet for all his training he is still only "typically" not noticed. For the truth of the matter is that although hiding in the shadows is what he has done all his life, it is not what he yearns for. While he would never go so far as to betray clan secrets or draw undue attention to himself, Hikaru desperately wishes to find others that he could rely on. It is not the Kagetaiyo way, it is not the "correct" way, but it is the path that he has chosen and the one he wishes to see through to the end.

His stubbornness was evident even from a young age, where he would often disobey his teachers in search of his own path. Reckless some called him. Outright foolish. A heart too kind for the world they lived in, the world bathed in contradictions where up was down and down, up. Of his softness Hikaru has always felt shame. Raised on the teachings of the elders, he knew what it could mean if he were to lose his balance on the road that he walked. To make up for it Hakaru is harder on himself than most, pushing himself to the absolute limit of his natural ability in the hopes that it might shore up any weaknesses within himself.

In interacting with others Hikaru finds it difficult to open up and fully trust in them. Given time and opportunity he may eventually come to have some that he could call friend, but for a long time after meeting anyone he will spend most of his time looking over his shoulder to make sure they are not hiding their own darkness in their soul. All of his training and instincts tell him that in all things he functions better alone. Fighting, surviving, carrying forward the values of the clan. Yet even for all his trust issues Hikaru can never ignore a plea for help.

While in combat he will follow the creed of the Kagetaiyo and do whatever it takes to win, this underhandedness remarkably never manifests itself in his day to day life. Hikaru is incredibly open and honest with those around him, as long as they do not pry too deeply into certain aspects of his past. His word is his bond, and he expects the same courtesy of those around him. Those that prove dishonest or untrustworthy will likely find that he won't be sticking around for long.

In terms of mental state, Hikaru finds himself at odds with himself. The heritage of his blood is primal, and would have him be filled with emotion. The heritage of his training pushes him to find inner peace and balance in all things. Having not yet mastered all there is to the Kagetaiyo no Ryu, Hikaru finds it difficult to always ensure his inner peace is secured. In times of great turmoil or upon over-use of his magic he will often think, act, and fight with fiendish fury. While he maintains his self-control Hikaru is like a blade sharpened to a razors edge. His ability to think critically, and to do so swiftly, is a testament to Kagetaiyo teachings. In truth it is in the brief moments when he wavers between these two extremes that he is most vulnerable.

Likes: Rain, quiet time alone spent reflecting, being on the road, training both on his own or with others.
Dislikes: Bitter things, being alone (yes it's on here twice, yes it makes sense), dishonesty, enforced laws that he views as pointless.

History
[tabs][tab=Creation]Hikaru was born into the Kagetaiyo clan, a small family that claims to trace it's origins to Yamamoto Kagetaiyo. The legend goes that Yamamoto was born to a human and a fiend, a union that would grant him and his descendants great power. Yet it came at a great cost, for reckless use of said power turned the user into a living nightmare for the clan and the innocents around them. Yamamoto set forth the tenets of the Kagetaiyo no Ryu, decreeing that just as there is darkness within light, so too must there be light within darkness. Through careful training and self-monitoring the Kagetaiyo have largely avoided detection throughout the centuries, passing on their abilities, beliefs and way of life from one generation to the next.

As was standard for the clan Hikaru was given a separate name at birth. Yoshirou Kagetaiyo. All Kagetaiyo adopt new names to reflect the path they walk, which they choose themselves once they begin training to unlock their magic. They use this name when dealing with others, but sometimes when they form a particularly close bond with an ally they might share their birth name. This act shows deep trust and faith. To a Kagetaiyo their old name represents the turmoil that raged within them before they learned to control their dark side. In essence they are giving their companion the name of the dark twin that resides within their soul. Should a Kagetaiyo overextend their powers and fall into darkness, the creature that arises in their place typically uses their birth name.

When the time came Hikaru chose his name and established his place within the clan as a novice. Yet as his training progressed it became more and more apparent that while he certainly had the aptitude for the Kagetaiyo no Ryu, he did not possess the "correct" mentality to truly master it. The arguments with his instructors became more and more frequent until one night he simply could not handle it any longer. Packing his things and meeting with his father he respectfully requested the opportunity to undertake a journey in self-imposed exile. Perhaps out there in the open world he would find the answers that he sought.

Although it came as little surprise it did not go over well. Hikaru was warned of the dangers of leaving without fully completing his training. Should his abilities overwhelm him it was the duty of the clan to find and reverse the process, or remove the problem permanently. Failing to dissuade his son the elder Kagetaiyo could only try to prepare him for what was to come. It was then that Hikaru was granted Death in the Dark, along with the knowledge of what it truly was. The blade was ordinary, nothing a common craftsman couldn't create if given materials and time, so it was strange that such a simple thing would be worthy of a name on it's own. Rather, it was the catalyst to an age old tradition. The blade was only as worthy as it's owner. Hikaru was free to wander as he saw fit, but he was to keep the clan's teachings and return with news from the outside. Perform well and the blade would be improved for him to signify his new status. Perform poorly and it would be taken from him and his training would begin anew.[/tab][tab=Ongoing]Tales yet to be written.[/tab][/tabs]

Magic
Magic Name: Kagetaiyo no Ryu [Way of the Shadowsun]
Magic Type: Ki Manipulation//Takeover
Tier of Magic: 1
Rank: 2
Magic Description: Kegetaiyo no Ryu is the magic and combat style developed by the Kagetaiyo clan to utilise and more importantly control their fiendish heritage. The combat style is a combination of rapid movement, overpowering strikes, and two part abilities that offer flexibility on the battlefield. Sun and Moon, light and dark, life and death. All things come together in harmony and balance, no side overpowering the other but instead empowering to greater heights. The magic itself is fond of close range techniques and other techniques that help the user get there (such as teleportation).

Not just for combat, for the Kagetaiyo no Ryu is not the style of a warlord or conqueror. While the fiendish heritage of the Kagetaiyo is exploited for it's unique blend of ferocity and treachery so too is the human heritage refined and honed for it's own task of healing, protection and purification. Without the fiendish half their magic would not work, but without their human half they would swiftly lose themselves to the darkness. The Kagetaiyo no Ryu is more than just a combat style to the clan. It is a way of life that teaches balance in all things, harmony between light and dark, good and evil. The first Kagetaiyo argued that denying rather than accepting their abilities would be the same as a swordsman refusing their sword on the grounds that it was inherently evil. Their magic was only as evil as those who wielded it, or so they claimed. While under the effect of "Balance of Light and Dark" (Take-Over) Hikaru takes the form of a fiend.

Transformayshun theme

Hikaru takes on the form of a red skinned fiend, horns and all. He becomes faster, stronger, and tougher to kill due to his fiendish resilience. The natural weapons of the fiend become his, which when coupled with his martial training make for a fearsome threat. Whenever he is about to perform the transformation for a brief moment his eyes flash red. If below rank 4 the red remains until the transformation is undone. Hikaru also gains [rank]*5 (15) corruption every time he enters this takeover. While in his TO form Hikaru gains magic that is every bit the same as his main magic: Kagetaiyo no Ryu. While it is more potent due to the increased stats his new form affords him, the magic is also more dangerous as corruption no longer naturally dissipates. The theme focus on a "Balance of Light and DarK" can never change for a Kagetaiyo.[/tab][tab=TO form Rank Progression]Take-over form:
Rank 1: Hikaru grows horns on his head, although at this point they're rather nubbly and not much by way of weaponry.
Rank 2: Hikaru's nails elongate and harden, becoming potent weapons to be used for stabbing or slashing. His horns fully develop and sharpen as well, making the possibility of getting impaled a real one for his enemies.
Rank 3: Hikaru's arms, legs and head take on a reddish tinge as his skin hardens. The result is a heightened defence that may ward off some attacks in those areas.
Rank 4: Hikaru fully embraces his fiendish heritage, transforming into a fully fledged fiend with red skin and pale white eyes.[/tab][tab=Measurements]While fully embracing the path of the Shadowsun, Hikaru takes on the aspect of a fully fledged fiend.

[tabs][tab=Technique Points]Techniques: 4/4 (+0 TP)[/tab][tab=Take Over Techniques]
Focused Ki - 2
Type: Offensive
Range: Touch/Melee weapon
Effect: By focusing his Ki (magic) into his blows, Hikaru is able to empower them into dealing greater damage with a 3 post duration. A successful melee blow against a target can be enhanced to deal additional minor magic damage if performed with a held or natural weapon, but can only be performed once per target per post. Successfully performing a Ki strike allows Hikaru to choose either light or dark. Whichever option is chosen, the magic becomes either a "light" or "dark" technique. Upon the duration expiring or performing 3 Ki strikes the ability goes on cooldown for 2 posts.

Touch of the Shadow Sun - 2
Type: Offensive
Range: Touch/Melee weapon
Effect: The Kagetaiyo strike a careful balance between light and dark, good and evil. Although Hikaru's heart is dedicated to good, he knows that the shadow of evil will always be a part of him. This realization along with careful control of his ki energy allows him to wield the energy of both the dark and light aspects of his being. Use of this ability requires a connecting strike, with two possible outcomes.
- "Light": The user heals the target struck for an under average amount (1 superficial injury) over a set duration (2 posts), and the ability also goes on cooldown for 2 posts. If augmented with [rank] dark counters the heal amount is instead average (1 minor injury) with same duration and cooldown.
- "Dark": The user deals additional [rank] damage to the target after a successful strike and then goes on cooldown for 2 posts with the user gaining [rank] corruption. If augmented with [rank] light counters this magic covers an area in a cone from the user stretching out 5 m and 2 m wide at it's widest.[/tab][/tabs]

Light within Darkness/Darkness within Light - 1
Type: Passive
Range: Personal
Effect: When focusing the power of the Shadowsun through their own bodies the Kagetaiyo are channelling a combination of dark and light energies. Continued use of his fiendish abilities adds corruption (darkness) to Hikaru, while his other abilities allow him to purify it (adds light). All of Hikaru's abilities will have either a light or dark descriptor, sometimes both. These descriptors determine their interaction with this ability.

When a light ability is used it automatically generates ([light spell rank/2] round up unless otherwise indicated) worth of light counters which are stored within Hikaru. The same can be said of dark abilities, only with dark counters. Light abilities can use stored dark counters for specific modifications to their text (outlined in the spell itself), and vice versa. The cost for doing so is variable, but is typically the spell rank's worth of counters (ie a rank 2 dark spell would generate 1 dark counter and use up 2 light counters if augmented in any way). As it is passive this ability may be used both in and out of takeover.

Entering his TO form, Balance of Light and Dark, is unique in that it automatically generates [TO rank] worth of both light and dark counters. Hikaru is able to store up to [rank * 10] counters of both light and dark variety and begins threads with this value at zero unless the thread is a continuation of a previous thread. Counters dissipate fully upon a period of dedicated rest (the amount of time it would take to fully get his strength back and not feel exhausted anymore after a fight, as an example).

Honesty without tact is cruelty.

My only note, at the moment, besides saying that you're handicapping yourself (and while I realize that was the intention it's not going to take long for you to be in "Lose Control" state with the amounts you're setting,) Is that your TO needs a magic description as well. As I told you before, most mages use magic both inside and outside of TO, with myself being the exception. So make sure you're outlining your ki manipulation of light and dark there as well.

I don't disagree with the fact that the system is a slight handicap, but I think it's a manageable one. At this rank unless combat lasts for more than 10 consecutive posts it is highly unlikely that full corruption will be attained, perhaps longer with the fact that corruption is naturally lost over time outside of his TO. Fast forward to rank 10 magic there will be tools specifically to mitigate or control corruption (and I should be able to reliably use it for 18 consecutive posts or more by my calculations), so the hope is to rarely if ever have this happen. In any case Hikaru will refuse to use anything that pushes him over his limit unless it's for a very good cause indeed which makes for interesting plots, and that's what I truly want in the end :P

I have added the description in for the second point.

Focused Ki - 3
The duration is implied to be instantaneous, but it needs an explicit cooldown. At this rank, 3 post cooldown is okay (and most likely able to be reduced to 2 posts starting at R4).

Hey Fumus, thanks for the input. There are a few questions I have as I'm still in the process of growing fully acquainted with the system. I'm curious as to why a technique that has no range (and therefore is at a natural disadvantage) and no duration (and therefore no repeat uses) would have such a high cooldown.

In comparison, an ability such as the following is completely broken:

Quote:

Eldritch Blast - (2)
Type: Offensive
Range: 20 meters
Effect: Ray attack (translucent black) fired from his hand causing minor non-elemental damage. The ray is a 10cm radius beam reaching out to 20 meters. Due to the explosive nature of the ability, it is armor breaking and can dent D rank equipment. Deals superficial non-elemental damage to armored targets. Cooldown of 1 post.

I created Focused Ki based on other techniques that I have seen on the site which have similar wording. Mainly I was interested in the "once per post" and "deal melee damage" aspects of the techniques I found. I'm at work so I can't find those exact examples but I can post them later tonight if that's what required.

So I suppose my questions would be, in order; why is this too much, and what can I do to make it work while keeping those main points active? Rank-1 damage comes to mind as an acceptable compromise for me, but I'm open to consider other options. Thanks again :)

Assuming that the character's magic does not have a focus on piercing effects and/or pure offense, that character's Eldritch Blast should not have such a low cooldown. For R2 I would call it at 3 post CD since it does have ranged capabilities.

I would be okay if you had a 2 post cooldown since Focused Ki is melee-ranged and already R3, but 1 post cooldown is far too low for a barrier/armor-piercing technique at these low ranks.

Generally, techniques that deal rank-equivalent damage/wounds have a minimum cooldown of three or two posts at R1-R2, and then can scale to a lower, reasonable-for-combat cooldown starting somewhere within R3-R4 depending on what else is being scaled for the technique. There are always exceptions, one of which being dependent on the character's magic description/what their magic focuses on, so it is easiest to look at techniques on a character-by-character case-by-case basis.

I've gone ahead and removed the armor breaking ability, and replaced it with a thematically fitting mechanic. Let me know if that resolves the issue or if further tweaking is required. I'd be ok with making it rank -1 or making it 1 post cd until rank 4/5? Again, I'm open to suggestions should more be needed.
