Wait so there was a difference between boxing and brawling? Akio hadn't realised that he thought they were very much one and the same only without rules binding you. Well, now he thought about it, he supposed that was a difference and you didn't use gloves in a brawl. He definitely couldn't shoot arrows in gloves so that was a definite no-no unless it was those MMA gloves but then he may as well toughen his body more save worrying about those. That question.... wasn't surprising to be honest after how badly he had his ass kicked, but that was at least something he did know. He looked down at his first and started to form his fist, clenching his fingers down tightly and wrapping his thumb just below the second and third knuckle. Yeh, that looked right, he even tested it by pushing his thumb against the fist to check it was just the right level of tightness. He looked back up and raised a brow at being given a free hit. Well, he wasn't going to turn down this opportunity! He had to at least try and wind him when he had completely free reign as to how he could hit and he had been told to hit full force. But he had to think, how do you hit hard? From what little he knew he had to pivot on his back foot and rotate his fist to increase the torque of something like that. Maybe he should do a thrusting type movement as well to throw his body weight into it.... Wait this kid was short so he couldn't punch in a straight line unless he bent his knee. Okay so bend knee, thrust forwards, rotate fist and pivot at once! A deep breath later and he set into motion, aiming for the sternum. He wasn't quite in sync but it was safe to say his striking was better than his stance and footwork not that it was hard. He smiled to himself despite a bit of pain in his wrist and shoulder and asked "How was that then?" hopefully it had some impact or he'd feel rather pissed. |

Verrin took the strike full in the sternum, a whoosh of air escaping his lips on impact. Didn't expect a cross, of all things, but he had to admit that Akio had done fairly well at that aspect, at least. Still, if Verrin was ever given the opportunity for a free punch, well... He was more partial to the diving punches, although, in fairness, that had little to do with Akio's strengths and more with his own deficiencies. After all, at his size, most punches that Verrin could throw would be considered "shovel hooks" so that was something to take into consideration here. "Not bad. Seen better, seen worse." It wasn't enough to knock Verrin off balance, but it was definitely enough to give him pause. He rubbed his chest a moment, thinking about where to go from here. They had briefly worked on his stance, and it seemed that Akio had already gotten a basic handle on punching, itself, even if Verrin had felt the punch give a little bit more than was expected, on impact. Verrin cracked his knuckles. He supposed they could try another sparring match, although Akio probably wouldn't have absorbed Verrin's lessons so quickly for that to turn out much differently. "So there's the question... Are you focusing more on speed? Or raw power?" DuFresne had always focused on speed, with power being a distant second. Verrin, on the other hand, always focused on power. All he needed was a few good shots to end a fight, while his rival required a sustained beating to finish off his opponents. Each had their merits, though Verrin's methods left something to be desired in the ring.Whichever strategy Akio decided to follow would likely work well for him, so long as he committed to it, but knowing his intentions would allow Verrin to teach him a few tricks that might be beneficial. "Oh, and by the way..." Verrin crossed over to Akio, putting a hand on his shoulder like an old friend. There was a smile plastered on his face which was reassuring and kind, like a father figure looking out for your best interests. He almost seemed like he was about to give out some sage words of wisdom, based on the confident smirk which he sported like a well-worn sweater. It soured in an instant as Verrin delivered a sucker punch to Akio's gut. "In a real fight, anything goes." he advised, "No such thing as a fair brawl." Edited by Fairchild, Nov 28 2016, 06:29 AM.

Oh yeh, he could hear the sound of some air escaping Verrin. He actually knocked the wind out of him..... though when he looked up he didn't actually seem to be that phased or off balance. That was one tough nut. Hard to impress too apparently, though he guessed that wasn't a negative comment even if it wasn't exactly the most positive. Besides, he'd definitely seen better from when he was knocked out Akio guessed, a punch that doesn't throw you off balance clearly doesn't compare to one which knocks you out. Yeh, thinking about that made Akio feel a lot better about himself. Verrin posed a good question, Akio looked up briefly and rubbed his head with his right glove as he thought back to when he punched for a few seconds "I guess I was trying to balance the two but I was leaning a somewhat towards raw power" Yeh, raw power was always good so long as you had enough speed to actually hit the other guy of course. A curious "hm?" escaped Akio's mouth as he raised an eyebrow, showing his interest at whatever Verrin was going to say. It was probably something wise and insightful given the whole set up he was doing, or something really immatu..... Holy mother of God that hurt. He was completely caught of guard by the blow so he had no time to brace as his gut seemed to explode in pain making his legs give way as he fell to his knees hunched over. He mumbled a stream of obscenities as he slowly started set his face straight and open his eyes, squinting at Verrin and managed to force out words which were more than a mumble this time "If I didn't have gloves on I'd give you the finger.... but advice noted" well he'd certainly never forget that lesson, well at least not until this pain died down. Seemed he'd forgotten he had taken one glove off, how hard had he been hit recently? Edited by ftant, Dec 8 2016, 07:02 AM.

"Jeez, didn't think I hit you that hard." Verrin didn't know his own strength. Well, he did, he knew he was stronger than a lot of people his age, but at the same time... In the ring, most of the people he had fought were used to heavy hitters, so seeing someone double over like that was a bit of a new experience for him. He patted Akio reassuringly on the shoulder and passed over to the area which Verrin dubiously referred to as "the kitchen" reaching into the half fridge and pulling out two glass bottles. Verrin plopped down on his sofa offering one bottle to Akio. "My trainer's prolly gonna kill me for this, but I've been craving a beer for weeks now." For some reason, he had deigned to buy beers which were not twist-offs. Verrin didn't own a bottle opener, and as such, he opened the beer in a way which had become almost natural to him. He stuck the cap in his mouth, prying the metal lid free with his teeth. He casually spat it through the air, towards teh general direction of a garbage can. The cap pinged off the rim, falling onto the ground amid a few other discarded caps which had similarly missed their mark. Verrin just shrugged it off, tilting the bottle back, the cool, frothy beverage splashing down his throat. Verrin could hear a small chirping sound coming from the corner of the room. Apparently, the Forge-Bird was starting to get restless. The cage which Eisenvogel slept in didn't have a door, but since the bird's flying feathers hadn't grown in yet, it still trapped the small, metal bird inside. Verrin placed his beer on the floor and strode over to the cage, offering one finger on which Eisenvogel could perch. After a couple moments of deciding, the metal bird hopped on, digging his claws into Verrin's skin and giving an excited tinny chirp. Rather than keeping the metal bird on his person, Verrin decided to allow him to roam on his own, placing the bird on the armrest of the sofa, his back turned to Akio. At this point, he was doing all he could to make it seem like Akio had the advantage for a surprise attack. Hell, he might even succeed in sucker-punching Verrin, if he was quick enough... but at the least, the tiny fighter was expecting it. |

Akio shot Verrin a squint like glare, not that hard? Who was he kidding, Akio felt like he'd been hit in the gut by a rampaging bull without any warning. Okay, so that shoulder pat made Akio suspicious, last time he did something vaguely like that he got punched in the gut without warning so what was he planning? Well, he didn't get sucker punched again which was nice. Akio steadily got to his feet, one hand rubbing his sore abdomen still... bear, that had booze in it and booze was a sedative so perhaps that would help ease the pain off. Something was missing though, a bottle but no opener, well that was weird. Thankfully Akio had a way around that, the same method as Verrin actually and threw rather than spat the bottle top over to the bin and actually nailing it. Akio stood there, choosing not to take a seat yet as he quickly downed the beer in two large gulps. A satisfied gasp left Akio's mouth as he noticed Verrin tending to a metal bird, well that was a new site. He could have tried to attack Verrin now but he didn't want to damage the bird. He placed the bottle in the bin as he watched Verrin place the bird on the sofa, back turned. Now this would have been the obvious time to attack but Verrin probably knew this too so Akio was going to play it a bit more subtle as he stood behind the dude "Say Verrin, can you tell me a bit about that bird please?" There wasn't a hint of malice in his voice, just genuine curiosity. However, if/when Verrin turned around Akio would move straight into throwing a left uppercut to his crown jewels and immediately following up with another left uppercut, this time making it a long uppercut to the nose. It wasn't intentional but he was rolling his shoulders and springing his leg in the punches to give them more snap and power. His plan was that the nut shot would hurt and stun him a little to land the second shot and it was easier to throw two quick punches off the same hand if speed was your primary aim even if it did sacrifice some power as he couldn't throw as much weight into the punch. |

Verrin smiled a bit at Akio's curiosity. He figured that a bird made completely out of metal would be something that people would be interested in, although his experiences with Eisenvogel proved that most people didn't care to ask questions. In a world where beasties were made of ice, fire and magic in general, most people were just used to the idea of strange animals wandering the world. So, when Akio showed interest, it was... a nice change of pace. He hadn't ever really explained his history with Forge-Bird to anyone before, minus Fauron... Although, to be fair, Fauron had been there when Eisenvogel had been hatched, so, he supposed... that didn't really count. "I raised him from an egg. Some old shopkeep said he was gonna be a Phoenix, but uh... I got the Forge-Bird instead." Eisenvogel chirped defiantly, obviously displeased by Verrin's implication. "Hey hey, I ain't sayin' I'm not happy you're here," Verrin laughed, turning back to Akio, "Just tha- WHOA!" Verrin did his best to dodge the attack, which, for the first strike, he managed. However, he was left in quite a vulnerable position. His butt was sticking out, his hands tucked near his genits, for protection. His chin was completely exposed, jutting forward, as if just asking for the uppercut it quickly thereafter received. Verrin was sure that his feet lifted over a meter in the air, although this was more his interpretation of events, rather than the reality of the situation. Instead, he stumbled backwards on his heels, only stopped from falling due to a timely collision with the wall. Verrin clutched at the armrest of the sofa as he tried to regain his composure. "Al-Alright." he stammered, obviouisly flustered, "That was... Yeah." Due to the unexpected strike, Verrin had also managed to take a bite out of his lip. He dabbed his fingers against his wound, spotting the red on his fingertips. Immediately, Verrin had to admit... Akio had taken his lesson to heart. Still, the boxer's temper wasn't exactly a secret. He wanted to just go full-force on this chump. Knock him on his ass and keep punching him until it wasn't funny any- You know what? No. Verrin... Verrin would calm himself down: count to ten. Yeah... That's what he would do... One. . . Two. . . Three... Four... Five. Six. Se- "-VEN!" Verrin leapt at Akio, rage apparent in his eyes. "C'mon, tough guy! GIVE ME ALL YA GOT!" He swung wildly, unpredictable. Given his superior strength and experience, he was sure that he would retain the upper hand. Verrin wasn't interested in something as easy as that. Instead, he goaded Akio into giving it his all. Of course, he hadn't expected that Akio was an exquip mage, or else he probably would have hesitated a bit in calling his opponent out. "That all?" he spat, "C'mon, don't you have some magic you can throw around!?" ((OoC: So... Thought about it. Seemed about right. We're gonna have a bit of combat in close quarters. Full-out fighting now, heheh.)) |

That was actually an interesting story about the bird despite the short telling it. He almost felt bad about what he was going to do, but he thought it was what Verrin wanted him to do given he had just imparted the knowledge. What Akio failed to realize, is that he was probably only talking about fights and not their entire dynamic and being there. Damn, he dodged the first attack.... Though half way through his second uppercut he realized this was almost as good! With his butt sticking back and his hands naturally going down to guard his nads his head was not only completely exposed but sticking out. He was skeptical about actually landing the hit until he felt his fist connect with Verrin's face. A grin quickly formed, he actually landed a hit! Not only that but Verrin was being forced back and even having to use an armrest to help right himself again. Dude even had a split lip, Akio couldn't see the bite because it was inside his mouth but it looked sore. Akio was almost as stunned as Verrin was for a moment, that was until the sudden shout of "ven" filled the air. What is Ven? Wait, more to the point holy shit sticks this dude was angry! The grin that once adorned Akio's face was firmly gone now. Verrin seemed to want an all out fight, and Akio didn't seem to have much of a choice in the matter. No sooner had he got his guard up did punches start to slam into his guard. Even through it, he could feel the power and rage behind them and they were pushing him back. He couldn't guard both his face and his body so he was taking a few blows to the body, each one feeling like a sledge-hammer. With this assault, there'd be no way he could fight back. His bow was in the room bu the couldn't get to it ye,t he needed an opening. He gritted his teeth at the mention of magic, he wasn't going to stab or shot this guy so he wasn't going to use it but he did need his bow to put up a half decent fight and an idea came to him. He willingly jumped back out of the range of a punch and threw a right head kick which was passable but not great. That wasn't his main play though, with Verrin angry he was going to rush straight in which was where his surprise would come. Akio landed his foot so his back was turned to Verrin instead of returning to his stance, before pivoting his right foot and twisting his body to add momentum to a spinning back elbow. He could have got more force. He wasn't really thinking about the target but it'd likely fall in line around the higher part of Verrin's head. |

"Ah! Some improvement, Akio!" Verrin laughed, taking advantage of his opponent's weak defenses "TWO FOR TURTLING!" Verrin punctuated the sentence by landing two more blows to his ribs. Akio leaped back, and Verrin was almost instantly upon him again... well, at least, that's what he had been going for. Instead, Verrin received a kick to the head for his troubles, sending him reeling backwards, falling to the floor. It wasn't a square kick, but Verrin was off-balance, falling into almost as poor of a form as Akio had been when he first arrived. He rubbed his head as he stood up, reaching for the metal ball which was resting on the table. He had already gone a bit over the edge, but now that Akio was reaching for his bow, Verrin wanted a weapon of his own. He floated the ball lazily over his hand, a devilish smile plastered across his face. He whipped his hand forward, the ball trailing quickly after his movement. He didn't intend to strike Akio with the attack, but rather, give him a moment of pause. The ball smashed into the wall near Akio's bow, sticking into the drywall firmly as Verrin smirked. "Don't turn your back on your opponent, Akio... Not a smart move. At. All." Verrin didn't approach quickly, but his anger was clear in each calculated step he took towards Akio. He put his guard back up, and with one hand beckoned Akio to come at him. Now it was going to be a real fight. Akio shouldn't be at a disadvantage anymore, even with Verrin's superior strength. The bow would be an equalizer, even if Verrin's student decided not to fire a single shot. For the most part, Verrin had worked through his rage, but he was still intent on teaching Akio a lesson about using Eisenvogel as a distraction. The bird chirped loudly at Verrin, as if trying to reason with the fighter to let the whole thing go. "Round Three, Akio. You better not hold back." |

It might have felt good to land a head kick on his opponent but the follow up didn't go according to plan, and it was obvious who had come off worse in that encounter. Verrin might have been the one to fall down but Akio was pretty sure he was in more pain from all the blows he took but he couldn't think about that now. He had to rush to his bow if he was to stand any chance in this fight, he wasn't going to use it to shoot arrows or anything like that but at least he'd have a big weapon to block and attack with. No sooner had he put his hand on his weapon, did an iron ball smash into the wall next to him.... Did Verrin throw that? He knew the guy was strong but he didn't realize he could throw that hard. Did that mean he had internal bleeding and was in shock from taking shots like that? Thank God that steel ball missed, because Akio suspected he might have ended up in hospital for a while, had it hit. So this was round three huh? Akio gulped, remembering something his dad said to him when he was a kid. Fear wasn't anything to be afraid of because it's a superpower that can make you faster and stronger. Never fear the man who knows no fear, fear the man who knows it and embraces it. Or something like that. Akio's visible fear seemed to lessen after one calm breath, he was still terrified on the inside but his exterior was somewhat calmer now. Using both his superior reach and the 68 inches of bow Akio launched a quick jab with the tip of the bow towards Verrin's chest but that was only as a distraction even if it had intent, he jumped forwards and pivoted clockwise on the spot, rotating and trying to hit Verryin in the head with the main part of the bow. Continuing to move forwards and spinning out to the side again Akio tried to get behind Verrin. If he managed this, he'd bring a knee up against his back before moving the bow around Verrin's head and pulling the steel body of the bow against his neck as his knee pressed against his back. He was trying to knock Verrin out or at least take the wind out of him. |
