Nanashi smirked at the latter’s answer. He was confident, that he was certain, but the man seemed to know well his own power to say such words. Nanashi could feel the said power from him, even if it was just the tip of the iceberg. And as he said earlier, he would not want to agitate this particular predator if possible. He wasn’t there for invading, nor simple bloodshed. He was there for the sole purpose of the smuggled creature. Coming to a container unit, the hooded man knocked on its surface. The hollow banging echoed before a creak and then it opened. Surprisingly, especially after seeing what Dandelion Sector was in the couple days he was there, Nanashi found the inside of the container almost otherworldly. He did not think that in such a dark and dreary place, a different world would be found. Surely this must what Gale had said when the outside world was far larger, far unexpected, and far greedier than those puny villagers. Because despite the lavish decoration of bright, gold like the sun, and what not, he could smell the lingering blood and the sense of hostility. And right behind the desk before the grand interior was seemingly another predator, Nanashi presumed. “A ship from Hargeon barely arrived. It was not supposed to for it carried a precious creature that should not have been taken. I’m taking him back,” Nanashi said quite bluntly. Of course, he tried his best not to add an insult or two, or worse, provoke a bloody scene just as he promised. But he was never gifted with the words to speak, even if he was taught well by the monk. Probably why his body moved faster and often ended with a brawl. But of course, the presence of the man from earlier reminded him of the condition. Artorius was his name, just as he responded to the call of the masked one seated behind the desk. It was truly a strange scene as he felt the tension in the air. While rival predators of the wild often find themselves clashing in a split second, here, the two were quite in control in their own ways. Keeping the ecosystem’s balance, was it? How interesting the world was, Nanashi thought before turning his glance back to the masked one. “I heard it is a trade. A part of your… ecosystem to do things. If so, then if I can’t have him back for free, what shall I do?” said Nanashi, questioning in all seriousness and genuine naivety as he clearly lacked the expression of what the tense atmosphere around him called for. But surely, he thought, if equivalence was the question, he was of equal value as the creature, or much more as he was a predator at the very least. Meanwhile, the cub that was stolen was still a cub and far from being the deadly creature it ought to be. |

"What sort of "precious creature" are you talking about?" the man said, his voice muffled as it traveled through the filters of his gas mask. "Unless it's a whale you're speaking of, we don't deal in animals. Except whales, as you might know," he said as he rubbed his chin through the mask. The Whaler's Gang's name was not simply given to them for show. For decades, they had controlled the trade of whaling goods in and out of Dandelion, bringing in their enormous harvests atop their iron ships while the creatures still lived. Fishing had long been a part of Dandelion's culture, but whaling was one of their specialties, much to the leviathans' misfortune. Artorius hated the idea of such gentle, powerful beasts being hunted so profusely, and in such a wasteful manner, but it kept the city alive. Their meat and blubber helped to fuel Dandelion's industry, offering a cheaper alternative to lacrima products and more expensive meat products. "Look..." the masked man said with a deep sigh. "If you're after an animal, then you've come to the wrong place. We don't deal with those kinds of goods, not anymore. But, we do know someone who is." "I'm listening," Artorius said. "Beside the Kingston riverfront, in the Commercial District, there's a bunch of old warehouses. The Mercer gang's warehouses. You know the place?" he paused for a moment, then shook his head. "Nevermind. Stupid question. Of course you do. Anyway, there's a warehouse there that's got some heavy security, and talk on the streets is that they've been taking in cargo. But not just any cargo. The cargo seems to yell and shout and rattle. Most would think they're just dealing with human trafficking. But, one of my boys says he heard some growling and roaring." "Now, I know most people don't roar and such," he tossed a smug look towards Artorius. "But, if an animal is what you're looking for, that wouldn't be a bad place to start. So, if that's all you're after, then see yourselves out. And, Sidonis, don't say I've never done you any favors." Artorius frowned. He hated feeling like he owed anybody anything. In a city like this, it meant someone had a bit of power over you, and that was one of the worst disadvantages to have. Nevertheless, he was just glad this matter was settled without much issue. Moreover, it also gave them a few leads. Artorius lead the way out of the shipping container, off the ship, and back through the docks where they encountered all manners of people from dockhands to Caelemuse sailors, one of which Artorius recognized and spoke politely to. After that, Artorius made a beeline to the warehouse that was their next clue. |

“What kind? It was hurting. It was… roaring… and hurting. It was not meant for it to be taken away.” he said. It would be a lie to say that Nanashi never once thought of cutting that head off. Surely there must be a reason behind that gas mask, and yet, the way he spoke… his tone, was just somehow annoying. Or perhaps Nanashi was just downright angry at having reached this point and things weren’t going his way. He had to be quick. Inside, he knew he had to save that creature. And yet, he could not give a satisfying description of just what kind it was. And so he would have to deal with this person’s speech. Amidst it all, he stole some time to glance at those around them. This ‘syndicate’ thing was definitely different from those organised hunters he had encountered before. Then, all of a sudden, the conversation took a turn and he was hopeful once more. “That’s it!” he said suddenly, looking at the man with the mask, and then turning to face Artorius. “We need to get there. I need to set it free.” He said almost without paying attention to the rest of the other man’s words. Of course, after taking a few steps, he paused and then turned to face the leader of this bunch and gave a bow before walking back, eager to get going as he waited for Artorius to lead the way. Outside, the fresh night air was quite the treat but he would not yet be complacent. He followed the hooded man as close as possible as they left the docks and made through the few streets here and there. Although Artorius was proving useful for this particular search, Nanashi felt a little uncomfortable. If the man knew a lot, then shouldn’t he play a role in this as well? “Are you sure you’re not involved in this?” asked Nanashi as they continued to be on their way towards wherever that warehouse was. “You certainly know everyone here and seem to have grasp of things.” Suspicions were bad. They were the basis of confrontations. But Nanashi simply did not want to be fooled anymore. Not like before, and not now when he was trying to give humans a chance once more. |
