"Interesting," Varriden mused, glancing at the vials. "I've seen multiple types of solutions used as a catalyst for magical activation or amplification, but perfume wasn't one of the examples in the books. Usually it's a lacrima or lacrima powder, something already aligned with magic with its own natural properties." Then she leaned in and kissed him, which, needless to say, he was not expecting. "....Ah, I think I might have misunderstood," Varriden said after a moment. "I thought 'snug' was short for 'snuggle'. I'm familiar with the semi-slang term 'snog' as a word for kissing, but didn't make the connection. A fault of my own for not clarifying. And while it was sweet of you, I think we should leave it at that - I fear I have neither the luxury nor the time to spare from my studies to be involved in anything with another. It's what I believe most people refer to as being 'married to your work'." he added. "And while the phrase isn't a perfect descriptor, it is admittedly not entirely wrong in regards to how much of my time is spent focused on it - after all, it's quite literally my livelihood." She did compliment his skills in magic, though. "Kind of you to say so," Varriden said with a nod and a smile. "Though I suppose part of the credit must go to the mage whom I copied the ability from in the first place. And yes, Varry is fine. I've had a few nicknames, though admittedly, 'Varry' is a new one, even though it sounds like something one of my classmates really should have thought up before you mentioned it - I almost feel like they missed out, not even thinking to call me that," he added with a slight chuckle. "I've met some other Archive mages, though only a few. We're a rare bunch, though not as rare as your own magic is, admittedly." Varriden said. "As for why I'm here, you're correct. I seek to add to my spell collection by exploring the old ruins. I heard this used to be a place where an old dark guild was housed, so I hoped there might be something left I can use to advance my own magical studies somewhat." Marilyn had kissed Varriden in the lips, which made him surprise of course. It was her intended effect. He strated explaining to her about how he can't involve himself to someone else. "Ssshhhh..." Marilyn hushed him. "Relax Varry dearie. That was just my friendly kiss." She teased him. "And I'm not really the girlfriend type of girl you know." She added with a laugh. "So relax okay? Besides, you don't owe me an explanation. You could just shake it off. After all, no one saw me kissing you." She reassured him. "Unless you have a girlfriend. Then that would make things interesting, wouldn't it?" She vexed him. She rolled his eyes as he told her that she should also give credit to the owner of the spell. "Duhh! Your magic is a proof that there is no such thing as rare magic." She said as she leaned on his shoulder. "You can actually beat anyone with that magic you know. You can determine the weak points of such magic and you can analyze spells to work against them." She whispered to him. "Unless you copy my spell without securing my perfumes, then that would be another story." She told him as they went on. She actually blushed as he regarded her magic as rarer than his. "Aawww...thank you! At least someone think it's not stupid to use perfumes to manipulate the weather." She said as she remembered losing to a wizard who afterwards call her magic stupid. Marilyn got curious about the spells he was looking for as he revealed to her about his motiff. "Oohhhh, I want to see this spell that you are looking for." She said as they reached the door that contained the green light. Without letting go of his hand, she kicked the door open and saw a glass sphere which was hanging below a crack in the floor, in which another green light was shining through. But it was more potent in color than the one that they followed here. "Okay. So that is a bit creepy." She said as she played with the green light reflecting in the whole room. She formed some shadow animals with her one hand and them looked around. Around them were numerous books with moldy bindings. |

Apparently, Marilyn hadn't meant anything by the kiss, saying that being a girlfriend wasn't really her thing. "Well, I'm glad to hear I didn't ruffle any feathers," Varriden said, slightly relieved he hadn't hurt her feelings. "And true, no one else down here to spy, but I felt like you, at least, deserved an explanation of sorts, just to clear things up. I don't have a girlfriend, though - like I said earlier, married to my work," Varriden said with a slight shrug. "Well, I don't think it really disproves that idea," Varriden said, when Marilyn claimed his magic proved that no magic types were rare. "Granted, I will admit that I've collected enough magic types that there IS some amount of overlap, but each kind is unique in it's own way. For example, I have over a dozen different ways I can create a barrier or a shield with magic, but each method I watched a mage create one with was different. One used darkness, one used like, one used rock. One guy could even tap into his magic unless he was angry. I might be able to fight any mage, but I can only beat them if I've happened to acquire something that can effectively counter their own magic - thus my drive to collect as many magical types as I can manage." She did bring up her own magic as a copy point, though. "True. While I could copy your magical techniques, it actually wouldn't do me much good without knowing how to make your perfume mixtures, as they serve as the catalyst, and my method for copying a spell mimics the activation of it in the same manner that the original mage triggers it. Unless, of course, you'd be willing to share the recipe?" "To clarify, though, there isn't a specific spell I'm searching for," Varriden said. "More that, being a guild, they must have had their own spells and some amount of research on their part - either as a guild or just a few of the members with inquisitive natures - and I'm hoping something was left behind that would advance my own studies, and hopefully is still intact enough to both legible and usable." The next room they entered, Marilyn kicking the door open since Varriden's arm was still being held, appeared to be a library of sorts with a crystal light hanging under the floorboards, green in color, though it had a few cracks running through it. "It does explain the light we saw, though." Varriden said. "Though I'd like to take a look at the books, which will require both of my hands." |

"Awww...Such a sweet guy. No one cared for my feelings until you do. I think I'm starting to like you even more. And you are so dedicated to your work." Marilyn told Varriden as she flirted with him ven though he told her that he wasn't into such things as he's focused on his work. "I think I want to join your guild Varry. So we can be together!" She suggested cheerfully. "We could do missions together, eat together, sleep together." Marilyn said naughtily, teasing him with the idea of tailing him even at work. Varriden then explained to Marilyn about the nature of his magic and its weakness. "I see you trust me now." She said as she smiled at him. "You just told me the weakness of your magic. Which I could use against you." She told him as they walked further. Her body was closed to him. "But don't worry Varry. I won't hurt you. I don't the people that I like." She said as she leaned her head on his shoulder. The blonde diva offered her own magic to be archived by him. But it will only work if Varriden would know her recipe. "Oh yes. I can share my recipe. But on one condition. You have to kiss me." She told him as she watched his expression. Marilyn smiled naughtily at him as he waited for his response on her deal. As he would turn towards her, she would pout her lips toward him teasingly. The archive mage told her that he wasn't searching for a specific spell. They came to a room filled with books. Varriden then told Marilyn that he would be needing both his hands. "Alright." She said as she released his arm. He was now skimming the books when Marilyn felt something ran passed her feet. "Aaah!!!!" She said as she ran towards his back and hugged him from behind. "Varry! I felt something moving near my feet!" She told him as she looked around while hugging Varriden from behind. |

"Like I said, my work is both my livelihood and my hobby, so I have ample incentive to devote myself to it," Varriden said with a slight shrug. "Though it being one of my hobbies as well does make it considerably easier, as I'm usually willing to travel to places that wouldn't be worth the trip to someone just doing it for the sake of their own work." Marilyn joked about joining Varriden's guild....for various reasons. "I don't sleep in the guild hall, and I certainly sleep alone, so I have the distinct impression that that condition won't be changing, regardless of who happens to join the guild, though I certainly wouldn't stop you from trying to sign up." Varriden said, semi-cautiously. While he wanted to allow Marilyn the freedom she wanted with her choice of guilds, he also suspected she would actually try to make good on some of her threats, or at least continue to tease him about them. "Well, less that I distrust you and more that I certainly have to make small talk about something, as otherwise we're just wandering through a ruin while you're clinging to my arm," Varriden said somewhat flatly. She assured him that she wouldn't hurt him because she liked him. "As I recall, you were the one who was trying to use some kind of lightning technique on me before you fell down here," Varriden pointed out. When Varriden brought up the idea of her letting him borrow the recipe for her perfumes, she asked a price - a kiss from Varriden, pouting her lips towards him. Varriden smiled. "Deal." Varriden leaned around Marilyn to peck her on the cheek faintly before leaning back and holding out his free hand, open and palm up, his smile somewhat more cheeky all of a sudden. "I'll take that recipe now - as I don't recall you saying the kiss had to be on the lips." When they reached the library, Marilyn finally consented to let go of his right arm, Varriden shaking it slightly to adjust the sleeve that had gotten slightly ruffled by its sudden passenger, only for Marilyn to shriek and hug him from behind again. This is getting old rather quickly, Varriden thought with an internal sigh. "I'm sure it's just something harmless," Varriden said, reaching over to grab the chain the green light was attached to and raising it a foot or two so it illuminated the floor - revealing a mouse on the floor that swiftly ran between two bookshelves and through a hole in the wall. "Just a mouse, nothing to freak out over." Varriden said, letting the light go slowly so it dangled back at its original length. |

Marilyn pouted her lips as she waited for Varriden to kiss her. She even closed her eyes even though it was no use since it was dark. But she thought it would make things more dramatic. And sort of romantic. It was then she felt his lips had touched her cheek. She opened her eyes in surprise as she was not expecting it. He was smiling at her as he opened his hand in front of her. Before she could even complain, he explained to her that she just said kiss and did not specify it to be on the lips. Marilyn realized her mistake and glared at him. Aww Varry! That's not fair. Only kindergartens do that. Kissing someone on the cheek. That doesn't count." She said as she hugged his arm in protest. But she knew she had promised him. And she should honor it. "Fine! I will give you my recipe. But before this day ends, you will still kiss me." Marilyn said as she started to think of schemes. They arrived on the library where she let go of his hand as he scanned the book when something had startled the blonde diva. She clung unto his arm once again only for him to calm her down, assuring her it was only a mouse. "But they're filthy and disgusting! And they sometimes live on sewers. Gross!" She complained as she hesitantly let go of Varriden. She stood beside him as she slowly pulled a battered leather bound book. It was dusty. She blew the front cover and gold letters were revealed to her. Secrets of the Arcane Marilyn opened it and saw that it was actually a spell book. The first few pages consist of magics that were quite common among wizards. As she skimmed more, she noticed a page where a woman was holding a vial and an aroma was sort of coming from it. She turned to the page. It was a page dedicated to perfume spells. Marilyn read the page and realized that most spells where self-enhancing spells like increased strength and speed. Some were weakening spells. "Well, look at this. This is like first grade perfume spell. None of the spells in here are similar to mine." She boasted. |

When Varriden held out his hand for the recipe, Marilyn looked at him for a moment, confused, then her eyes widened briefly when she realized what had happened. Varriden one, Marilyn zero, Varriden thought, trying not to look smug about his technical victory. "Technically, you asked for a kiss, and you got one. That you failed to specify beforehand is no fault of mine, miss." Varriden said. "Besides, I've seen people far older than kindergartners give each other a kiss on the cheek, some of whom were likely old enough to have grandchildren in kindergarten. So I'm afraid the argument of it being something only a kindergartner would do isn't going to be enough to claim I didn't hold up my end of the bargain." She still seemed determined to get her smooch, though. "I suppose I can't stop you from trying to convince me otherwise, but I find it highly unlikely that your efforts will bear fruit. Still, I wish you luck - you're going to need it if that's your goal." Varriden said lightly. After the mouse left the room, the two parted company - meaning that Marilyn finally let go of Varriden's arm - so they could browse the books, Marilyn taking an interest in one book in particular that she took off the shelf, noting that it contained perfume magic. Curious now, Varriden wandered over to look at the book while standing to one side of her. "Well, no spells like the ones you've used, perhaps, but it does prove that you're not the only practitioner of perfumed arcanery. I wonder how long it's been a magic for," Varriden mused. "Given that bottled perfume isn't a terribly old concept, I thought it a recent type of magical development, but given how old this book seems to be, perhaps someone had the idea quite a while ago." |
