"Hey, hey, hey, easy there, easy! " Neos yelped, finding himself suddenly stuck midair with a hand that was only a few inches grasp away from his neck. "I swear, I didn't know you'd end up here, this usually doesn't happen when there's someone else around I don't know why-"

The man's grasp on his collar was just a tad bit firm, so one couldn't blame Neos as his body began to decompose into shiny green ooze, the lower parts of his limbs changing first and slowly drooping towards the ground like honey.

"This has been happening to me like, every month ever since I found out I could turn into goo!" The red-haired boy gasped, as the transformation rapidly made its way up towards his torso. He would have struggled, but the sheer strength of the man's grasp, combined with the shock of being manhandled so suddenly and without warning, made his sense of logical action compromised at the moment. "I can't control it, and I sure as hell-"

"-WOUldn't WaNt To!"
As his head rapidly became like the rest of his semi-liquid body, Neos' voice turned into that of a slimes, an odd and barely-coherent mess with little control over volume or enunciation alike. The upper parts of the slime bubbled as sounds came out, audible, but difficult to hear over the rush of the nearby waterfall.

"I Don't knoW WHERE we are EIthER, but UH, It might be a BAD IDeA to KIlL me, yOU knoW? WorST Case ScenaRIO, thiS hAppens agAIN next month, and WE eNd Up somewHERE ELSE, buT if I DIE- WHat iF We're TRAPPED ON A Deserted IslaND?"

The boy wriggled out of his hands, literally slipping through his fingers as he turned began to turn his body into a gelatinous mass. Even through his gloves Artorius hated the feeling of the jiggling jello. It felt like a squid in his hands, freshly pulled from the ocean and still covered in muck and slime. Artorius couldn't help but drop the slime-boy, letting him fall to the ground where he landed with a strangely satisfying splat sound. Surely, some sly businessman could make a killing by bottling up a similar goop and selling it to children. Call it splat, or goop, maybe even Ivan's Ooze.

Nevertheless, Artorius took a deep breath at what the slime-boy had to say. Neos was telling the truth, if his words were genuine and honest, then the boy would suffer for it. Artorius had hurt people for less in the past, and there was a lengthy list of people who had come down with a sudden and fatal case of being-in-the-way-of-a-pissed-off-Dragon-Slayer. Fortunately, Artorius was far more reasonable now than he was in his youth. Time, experience, and a healthy dosage of pain had made him more objective and logical. Even if he was responsible for bringing him here, it was safe to assume Neos was his ticket out of here. But he didn't want Neos to be cognizant of that, terrifying him into telling the truth was much easier and more effective. So, Artorius listened, his cold eyes cast in an unchanging thousand-yard stare aimed right at him.

The slime bubbled, and words popped out in an intonation that reminded him of being underwater. The roar of the falls made it even harder to hear, but Artorius managed, learning that Neos didn't know where they were, nor how this was happening. All that he knew was that this wasn't the first time this had happened, and that it surely wouldn't be the last. Artorius' tongue clicked subtly when Neos affirmed that it could be a bad idea to kill him. Artorius knew he wasn't bluffing, somehow, despite him not having a face or eyes, but Artorius didn't completely fall into it either way.

"Then I'll make a raft out of turtle shells and armpit hair. Trust me, kid, I've gotten out of worse situations," Artorius said while he crossed his arms over his chest. "But I'd rather not let that happen. So, you're going to get us out of here. You do know how to get us out of here, right?"

The slime, now fully on the ground, gathered itself together until it reformed into a complete blob, a spherical mass of gelatinous substance that, for some reason, was now slowly bouncing up and down as a means of self-propulsion.

"Uhhh...."

"WORSt case sCENArio, wait a month for IT TO PASS,"
the slime uttered, its voice still rather distorted but slowly becoming more controlled. "I MEAN, usually it doesn't come to THAT, BUT it's happened to me like, TWICE."

The slime began to bounce around Artorius in circles, picking up a bit of speed as it moved. "Usually it's easy enough to get out, last TIME THIS HAPPENED TO ME I found myself in a bathroom in someone's house in Dandelion, THOUGH I HAVE NO IDEA where we are right NOW. WELL, usually I don't know, but every time this happens to me I don't usually end up alone, like-"

The slime suddenly stopped in its tracks, its jelly-like body inflating and stretching to avoid being carried by inertia.

"I usually end up in a bad, very bad place."

A quiet growl had caught the slime's attention, and it rolled back up next to Artorius.

"Like, last TIME, IT WAS THE BATHROOM of someone who was TRYING TO KILL me level of bad."

From the nearby river-water, a creature rose. A giant beast, the bastard child of a crocodile and a lion, guarded by a body of spiked scaled and armed with claws that looked straight out of a horror movie. The monster- more appropriate term - was at least five feet in height, and with so much of its body still in the water, who knew how long?

"The only thing I've ever learned is, if I EVER WAKE UP AND find myself in a completely new place, the best thing to do first is ALWAYS RUN."

They were currently in the entrance room of a huge structure, practically an entire village built in one structure, made of bamboo sticks and solid stone - and the monstrous thing from the water had just blocked the exit. There were five other doors, five paths to take - one in each other direction, a set of stairs leading up, and a trapdoor leading below.

"A month?" Artorius scowled. "I don't have a month. I don't even have a few days!"

Artorius was beginning to have chills over how Nine Lives would hold up with him gone. He had left on an assignment that had taken him three days, and in that three days half of the plates had been broken, there was scorch marks all around the oven and stove, cat barf on the floors (this was expected, actually), and bullet holes in the walls. Who the hell was shooting a gun outside of the shooting range? That's what it was for!

Snow could manage everything to an extent, but sooner or later someone was going to crack and all hell would break loose. Artorius was currently the sole link that connected everyone in the guild, who could successfully mediate when things went awry, so if he was gone for over a month then Nine Lives could very well be the shortest-lived guild in existence. Not to mention, his house would have been ruined to pieces. Maybe he'd be pronounced missing, or dead. Hopefully someone clears his browser history.

"No, no, no. I'll get out of this. I've died. I've been cursed. I've gotten out of that. If I can do that, I can get out of this in less than a few days."

Though his mind was moving at a million miles per hour due to the sudden loss of both control and homeostasis, those words of assurance helped to ground him. The only hard part for him was that he had others to think about and not just himself. Either way, Artorius was at least optimistic enough to think about when he would get out and not if, indicating he was not unconfident he could do this. After finding a Dragon, getting his ass kicked by a Dragon, dying, coming back, and then truly coming back, nothing felt impossible. Such is why, when an enormous crocodile-lion (Leo-dile? Crocodilion?) emerged from the waters, Artorius hardly flinched.

But there was hardly time to fight it, especially in its own territory where others of its species could be waiting in ambush. "Tell me something you can turn into something that runs faster than a cat or a blob, kid," Artorius said, as he leaped forward just a second before a pair of enormous jaws snapped shut behind him.

"UHH....RUNNING on two feet is easier!" The slime managed to utter out through its bubbles, as the gelatinous blob rose mid-bounce and stretched upwards, and a red-haired boy landed on his feet at the end of the jump.

Watching Artorius take a leap forwards, Neos assumed that was the very direction he was intending on taking, and went ahead running in that same way - a fairly good decision, given that it was the direction directly opposite from the entrance from which the strange beast came. "Human, does human count? Human counts, I think!" He said, mostly to himself, as he fled from the great beast.

The great beast that, as its initial attempts to consume the red-haired boy and company failed, took to plan B and revealed itself not to be a what, but to be a who - the beast's body retracted and shrunk until it transformed into a humanoid form, a tall and rather elegant-looking man in colorful attire. Colorful, but also primal, crude, and rather tribal in design - feathers, bones, leather and such.

Behind the man, a hound of sorts leaped into view, its body decorated with equally colorful and similarly crude things.

Neos looked back, took a single glance, and-

Full-blown panic!

"Oh, I should have known, I should've known!" The red-haired lad practically screamed, as he practically threw himself through the passageway. "Headhunter, the Headhunter, it's the Headhunter! The Headhunter's after me again!"

The Headhunter? Though, judging by the slow but confident way in which that man now walked towards Neos and Artorius, the hunter part of the title definitely seemed believable.

"Well, kid that certainly beats a blob," Artorius replied in jest as they began running as hard and fast as they could. Though, as they ran Artorius wondered if he would have been better off just carrying Neos while in blob-form, or even throwing him. Surely, that would have been faster, but the fact that Artorius didn't actually want to handle or touch the blob kept him from suggesting that. Animal fat aside, he always hated food that jiggled. It made him think of the one night he drank jello shots, which was also the only night he had drank jello shots. In his youthful zeal, he had consumed more than any human ever should, and the sickness and hangover were both swift and brutal. The consistency and texture as he spewed the stuff out his throat and down a back alley, toilet, and all over his living room floor was like a nightmare.

But Artorius had other things to worry about than puking. Hopefully. He hated puking. Though, in this case, this situation wasn't much better off. An enormous beast-turned man was now chasing them, and from the looks of things wasn't all that much into modest hello's and pleasantries. But, one thing was certain, the being seemed much like Neos himself. A shapeshifter, only much less polite and much more bloodthirsty, and a far stranger sense of fashion.

"I'm guessing you're not on good terms, then," Artorius commented as he began climbing up a wall easily twice his height. Though its surface was perfectly smooth, Artorius had managed to scale it effortlessly, a testament to his prowess. Specifically, his prowess at running from things and people trying desperately to kill him.

"As-As it turns out, and I don't know if you've noticed because I don't think many do," Neos allowed himself the luxury of speaking, given the fact that he was scrambling rather fast and the so-called 'Headhunter' was making no attempt to up his pace - the space between them was increasing incrementally. "But there's a bit of a market for people who can turn into things, like, permanently turn into things!"

A wall?! Without time to think, the red-haired boy trusted his instincts as he leaped into the air, going from boy to bird within a matter of minutes; even while flying upwards, the bird continued to speak. "And that doesn't even include the people who just want people like me dead- have you seen the Black and White yet? No? No? Good, never meet them, they're terrible people!"

Up the wall was another platform - or room, rather, this entire area seemed to be made out of nothing more than countless interconnected rooms, most of them empty devoid for several relics; old pots, beds of straw, primitive technology and the like.

What made this particular room stand out, however, was the lack of exits. There was clearly a doorway, but it had been sealed in with stone - laid stone. Someone, at some point in time, had consciously decided to seal this particular room up, it seemed. The only other way out was through the window - but this was at least the third story, and the rushing sound of the waterfall seemed particularly loud around here.

"Oh, not good!" Neos declared, still flapping in mid-air. "Um...can you smash through rocks, or are we about to dive and pray we can swim?"

As Neos spoke, Artorius was beginning to imagine the sheer number of applications for a shapeshifter. Due to the world Artorius inhabited he only saw seedy and deadly uses for it. Imagine taking the face of a man, or even a fly on the wall, sneaking into anywhere and everywhere, and stealing and killing anyone or anything. There were hardly better magics out there which could make such a capable assassin or a recon scout. Then, there were other uses for it, which were far more unsavory and that Artorius hardly wanted to think about. Though, it wasn't as if he had the time either.

After Artorius scaled the wall, and Neos swapped into the form of a majestic hawk and flew over it, the two hurried onward up towards another platform. The younger man mentioned people who wanted him dead, even giving him a name. In all of his life, Artorius had never seen nor heard of this "Black and White", though Neos was quick to give him reason to not want to. "I'll take your word for it, kid," Artorius said as they raced across the platform.

The next room was a veritable maze, largely empty with the exception of primitive furnishings. The headhunter's belongings, maybe, Artorius thought, but he pushed the thought aside as the realization that there were no holes in this godforsaken building. Their only choice was to break through. Or, more closely, have Artorius break through. "Stand back," Artorius said, before drawing the sword across his back. With a deep inhale to calm himself and exhale to bring life to his magic, Artorius coated his blade with wisps of black and silver. Squeezing his blade's hilt, the swordsman cut four times into the wall, creating four deep gashes with black vapor billowing from it into its surface in the shape of a rough rectangle. Sheathing his sword, Artorius strode forward and kicked the newly formed door down. "There's your door. Now, lead kid. You seem to have a better handle on this place than I do."

Even while running, Neos took the luxury of making a shrugging gesture. "It- comes with the job, I guess. Maybe there's a market for people who really, really know how to run away in the middle of giant abandoned buildings?" He had a point - this here was a man used to running around building interiors, judging by how he almost instinctively twitched and turned right before rounding a corner, or how he was leaping over the remnants of ancient furniture like some professional pole vaulter gone wrong.

With all that talking and moving, Neos glanced backwards to catch his fellow runner's expression or response, unaware of the fact that the the path in front of them was- was changing. It was a perfectly fine hallway a mere second ago, but when the red-haired fellow turned around, the path before them flickered, and the opening warped from yet another empty hallway to- well, some place darker, as if the room just went from noontime to midnight in the blink of an eye.

Neos didn't even realize it until he ran straight into the portal, and came out of the other side hitting a wall face-first.

"Oof!"

The young man fell flat on his back, the first thing he realized being that they weren't quite in the same place anymore, the second thing being an odd sense of familiar relief, and the third being the total and utter annihilation of that sense of relief when he noticed exactly what this here room looked like.

Judging by its appearance from the view of one lying on the ground such as himself, this was a hospital ward of sorts, one that was evidently not in use. Hospital beds were strewn about in a most disorganized manner, and long-abandoned judging by their conditions. Granted, this room wasn't entirely lifeless, no, he had a very clear view of a few cockroaches scuttling about, but it probably had been at some point. How could Neos have come to that conclusion?

Well, the four walls couldn't have possibly been splattered such a nice coating of splotched browning red for no reason, now, could it?

Stay the course.

Suddenly, after diving deep into the portal and slamming face-first into a wall so hard Artorius nearly felt his teeth chip, they were elsewhere. Gone was the exotic ruins. Replacing it was an old, very old, dilapidated, very dilapidated, hospital. From the looks of things, it had been abandoned for at least three decades. Hospital beds were strewn about, and their cloth had been cut apart, torn, or strewn about the floor. A thick layer of dust coated just about everything, and several animals had decided to make this place their home. Primarily cockroaches and rats, of course.

It was apparent that the Headhunter would soon follow. Artorius had no doubt in his mind about that. Neos was hardly lying when he spoke of how the hunter had been following him. Artorius could sense it, even smell that he was telling the truth. Artorius planned on using the time before the hunter joined them once more to prepare himself as much as possible.

For now, Artorius focused on observing his surroundings beyond the rats and roaches and the dirty hospital floors that were now stained with mud and dirt. He wandered, still staying near Neos of course, but wandered nonetheless, searching for something, anything, that could lead them to either the next portal or to sure safety. Sadly, the Dragon Slayer found little respite, but at least not any less than the poor unfortunate denizens who made this abandoned asylum their home. There was one that caught his eye.

Artorius had spied a starving, dehydrated dog in the corner of the room surrounded by its own filth when he had turned a corner. He hated dogs, naturally, but he couldn't exactly let it sit there and die, even when they were being chased by a crazed hunter. A stick of jerky and a small puddle of water poured on the floor from his canteen. The dog would live for a bit longer, but after that it was up to the beast. For a moment, Artorius wondered if what he was doing for this dog was what he was doing for Neos or for the other kids. Was he trying to rescue and adopt them? Artorius shrugged.
